Streaming Sucks! Eliminating Expenses as Costs Creep Up #542
We talk a lot about finding free stuff on the side of the road, in HTM parlance, curb alerts! It’s a great way to reduce waste and save money if you’re able to find something that you’re needing, and it just so happens to be sitting there on the curb for you. But if you find yourself driving around town for a few hours every night after work in hopes that folks have abandoned a neat tchotchke that you may or may not actually need, then you might be dedicating too much time to the pursuit of free stuff. Similarly, streaming subscriptions can be a wonderful thing- they’ve been able to deliver some amazing content to hundreds of millions of people. But if you have too many streaming companies set to autopay, not only is it consistently draining money from your bank account but it’s also stealing your most limited resource- your time. Listen as we tackle why it is we stream in the first place, how to cut the cost of streaming, how to stream for free, and contemplate what else you could be spending your time doing as we challenge ourselves to spend less time on the couch to begin with! During this episode we enjoyed a Benevolence by Flying Machine! And please help us to spread the word by letting friends and family know about How to Money! Living Life with the End in Mind with Jordan Grumet #541
For a certain subset of HTM listeners, it might be easy to not see the forest for the trees. You might naturally be drawn to the finer details of personal finance like expense ratios and Excel formulas in an attempt to ensure that you’re living the most efficient and optimized life that you possibly can. But, that’s when the subtle shift can take place. That’s when the means to the end begins to overshadow the actual end, which for many is to simply live a good and happy life. Instead, we should live our lives with the end in mind and that’s why we’re talking with Dr. Jordan Grumet, also known as Doc G. Jordan was an internal medicine physician when he discovered the personal finance community. Since then he started an award winning podcast and is now the author of Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life, which will be published in a couple of weeks. Listen as we discuss meaningful work, resisting the traditional American work culture, what it takes to set priorities in life, and much more! During this episode we enjoyed an Indolence, which is an American sour, by Pretentious Barrel House! And please help us to spread the word by letting friends and family know about How to Money! Making the Most of an Economic Downturn #539
A friend of ours writes a daily newsletter, and he recently featured a 74 year old named Paul who has lived inside of an iron lung since he was six years old. Paul was completely paralyzed due to polio from the neck down, and his disability means a life that most of us could barely imagine. But that didn’t stop Paul from achieving many goals over his lifetime- he taught himself to write with a pen in his mouth, he earned a college degree, and even went on to become a lawyer! We share this to highlight that there are a number of factors outside our control, and we should instead focus our energy on the things that we do have control over. There’s little that we can do when it comes to the economy, recessions, and inflation. But we do have a say over our personal finances- the financial foundation we build for ourselves, the money we spend, the money we invest, and the ways that we ensure a healthy and steady income. Listen as we cover all of that and more during this episode! During this episode we enjoyed a 2022 Mexican Cake by Westbrook Brewing! Fractured FIRE: Early Retirement, Not So Hot Right Now! #536
Some things sound really good... until they aren’t. Like when your kids say they’re going to spend all of their money at the candy store and how they’re going to eat ice cream every night of the week. Sure that sounds tempting now, but the reality isn’t quite as rosy. As you grow older you realize that there are constraints that prevent you from a diet like that- namely the health issues that would arise! We think that something similar is happening to the Financial Independence Retire Early movement. An idea that sounds really compelling when the market is kicking butt doesn’t feel the same once a bear market has ravaged those early retirement portfolios. Not to mention that with inflation on the rise, your dollars aren’t getting you quite as far as they used to! So we offer a few alternatives to those who are striving after early retirement, how we would recommend that you think about your work and career, and then we highlight why we think the FIRE movement still has its merits. During this episode we enjoyed a Just a Kiss by The Bruery! And please help us to spread the word by letting friends and family know about How to Money! Becoming a Financial Samurai with Sam Dogen #535
Happy Independence Day! We’re marking the occasion by talking with Sam Dogen- one of the pioneers of the Financial Independence Retire Early movement. Sam is the founder of Financial Samurai which he founded over 10 years ago. He retired at age 34 after a career at Goldman Sachs, but then came out of retirement as retired life was a bit too boring for him! He has written over 2,100 articles at his site and now his new book “Buy This, Not That” is about to be released very soon which is an excellent guide on how you can optimize your money to build wealth and live life on your own terms. During this episode we talk about why Sam isn’t a huge fan of the 25x rule, maximizing your earning potential, engineering a layoff- we’re excited to talk about all of that and more today! During this episode we enjoyed a Daily Serving by Trillium- and thanks again to Sean for sending this one our way!
