Navigating the Kinda Crazy Car Market with Car Dealership Guy #679
Used cars have APPRECIATED in value! This has never happened before and is a result of the upended car market that we’ve experienced over the past few years. And with this volatility comes a set of new challenges to navigate if you’re looking to buy or even sell a car. But fortunately for us we’re joined by our first anonymous guest on the podcast: Car Dealership Guy, who has blown up on Twitter thanks to his insider knowledge and consumer friendly advice on automobiles. CDG has been in the industry for years- starting out selling cars out on the lot to owning his own dealership and he’s now the go-to car market expert to help consumers understand whats going on. He has a podcast and he sends out car market insights to over 45,000 folks via his newsletter. We discuss how the car market got to where it is today, car manufacturers that are struggling the most, buying from a private seller vs online vs dealerships, how a trade-in might actually make sense, and much more today with the Car Dealership Guy. The Dirty Truth About Home Ownership #677
You’ve gotta wait 30 minutes to get back in the pool if you’ve eaten! Don’t pee in the pool- it’ll turn red! There are a lot of things we learned in childhood that we’ve likely discarded as false or at least irrelevant at this point. But there are probably some things we still believe because they were ingrained in our brain at an impressionable age. Similarly, there are a lot of folks clinging to the ‘American Dream’ that they should have that house surrounded by that white picket fence, why? Well in large part because it’s the financially smart thing to do. “You’re throwing away money if you're still renting!” It’s a “money fact” lodged somewhere in the recesses of our brain that we can’t shake. We think that recency bias is leading a lot of folks astray in their quest for home ownership. And of course higher mortgage rates play a role as well. On top of that, it turns out that it’s MUCH more affordable to rent in most major metros today, but how much could you save every month? But at the end of the day, if you still want to purchase a home we have a few prerequisites that you should have checked off your financial to-do list, before you start making offers. Overcoming Our Idiot Brains #674
Have you seen the meme of the guy on a bike who puts a stick in his spokes and then crashes? There are literally hundreds of different versions based on this goofy comic. For instance the first frame on one says “15 holes of good golf,” then followed by “my brain realizing I’m playing well,” as he puts the stick in the front wheel before writhing in pain on the ground. The truth is, it’s not all that hard for us to become our own worst enemy. And that reality is what makes those memes so hilarious and poignant at the exact same time. We understand the truth, we know how it is that math works, and what it is that we should do… but then we go and do the exact opposite thing. And that’s particularly true when we’re talking about money. Simply knowing how to invest won’t make you wealthy and having good intentions won’t get the job done. So today we want to talk about some of the common ways we’re conspiring against ourselves and offer an antidote to help us make the progress we’re looking to achieve. As Carl Jung said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” It’s time to dig in! Want more How To Money in your life? Life After Financial Independence w/ The Mad Fientist #673
We had the pleasure of sitting down with our friend Brandon Ganch, who is The Mad Fientist, while we were recently traveling in Scotland! Brandon started his career as a computer programmer but then quickly added blogger, podcaster, musician, and producer to his expanding list of pursuits and interests. This is a more casual conversation but listen as you’ll learn a lot about Brandon- life events that may have shaped his view of money, how he discovered and then became a leading voice in the Financial Independence Retire Early movement, working with his wife towards financial freedom, possible regrets from pursuing FIRE, and how having a kid and growing older has changed how he now spends his money. We were especially thankful for the Ganch’s hospitality considering they had just moved into their lovely home, with a new baby, just a week before us tourists arrived on the scene!
