En oud-VVD-leider Frits Bolkestein schreef ooit: 'Ik weet wat het liberalisme is, maar niet wat het neoliberalisme is. Sterker: ik ken geen liberaal die dat wel weet.' En toch vormt het neoliberalisme voor velen op links een soort containerbegrip voor alles wat er mis is met onze samenleving. Is neoliberalisme dan nog wel een nuttig analytisch concept? Why don't refugees just get in line and enter a particular destination country legally? Well, as David Fitzgerald (University of California, San Diego) argues in his latest book 'Refuge Beyond Reach: How Rich Democracies Repel Asylum Seekers', many of the richest democracies in the world have made it all but impossible for refugees to do so. Countries like Australia, Canada, the US, and many European countries have erected a global system of remote control that stretches far beyond their own borders to repel asylum seekers from ever reaching their destination. And many of these systems were actually designed to deter Jews from fleeing persecution from the Nazis and their allies. Professor Appiah has written widely on a range of topics, including political and moral philosophy, philosophy of language, race and identity, and African intellectual history. He also writes the weekly Ethicist column for the New York Times magazine. His latest book is ‘The Lies That Bind: Rethinking Identity’ which has now been translated in Dutch ('De Leugens die ons binden: een nieuwe kijk op identiteit'). Het vormt een van de meest geciteerde en controversiële studies in de sociale wetenschappen van de afgelopen tien jaar: de studie van Robert Putnam naar de schadelijke effecten van etnische diversiteit op sociale cohesie. Tom van der Meer, hoogleraar in de politicologie aan de UvA, schuift aan om Putnam's claims en bewijsvoering te ontleden en om ons te helpen navigeren door de enorme hoeveelheid replicaties en vervolgonderzoek. Het zal blijken dat de vraag of Putnam nou gelijk had of niet veel lastiger te beantwoorden is dan op het eerste gezicht misschien lijkt.
