Myth of the 20th Century

“Cybernetics attempts to find the common elements in the functioning of automatic machines and of the human nervous system, and to develop a theory which will cover the entire field of control and communication in machines and living organisms.” -Dr. Norbert Wiener writing in The Scientific American. Taken slightly less literally, in communist Russia, central planners sought to do just that. By describing the sprawling Soviet economy as a unified set of equations, all sharing a set of inputs and outputs, they believed they could efficiently plan and organize production to catch up and overtake their capitalist rivals. For a while, it appeared to be working, with annual increases in GDP surpassing all Western nations in the 1950s and 60s. By the 1970s, however, diminishing returns had clearly set in, with even admitted growth rates plummeting, leading to the USSR swallowing its pride and importing grain from America, saved arguably only by rising oil prices that enabled it to earn the foreign currency it needed to make up for its production shortfalls. Since the early days of European colonization in North America, the great abundance of natural resources was apparent to settlers and their colonial sponsors alike. Timber was chief among these, as the tremendous size and unspoiled nature of the forests that spanned from Canada down through Florida provided fuel, building materiel, and a source of jobs for a great many people. As the centuries progressed, and the frontier closed on the Pacific, America started having to contend with the fact that its resources were not unlimited, and the very real consequences to the environment as well as to the communities living amongst the trees of restrictions on logging had to be weighed. Today, it is less so the forest owl that is endangered, but instead the very notion of an American small town living away from large cities, self sufficient, and able to provide a life that for many was quintessentially free and working class. In small societies, such as hunter-gatherers, warrior tribes, or rural farmers, honor and reputation form a large part of one’s personal stock and trade. In larger civilizations, however, where power is measured in money and influence, honor becomes an inconvenience to accumulating wealth for the unscrupulous. The last honorable man – in a society of scoundrels – is at a distinct disadvantage. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Europe – particularly the Axis Power countries – was the prime battleground for dominance between the emergent superpowers of the United States and the Soviet Union. Along with East and West Germany, Italy was similarly divided along ideological lines, with pro-American, typically business-oriented interests, pitted against mostly communist and Soviet-sympathizing labor movements. In between were the fascists, who sought to retain or adapt the system for the post war era that had held power officially for over 20 years prior to the war. Between 1969 and 1980, the Cold War turned hot for civilians and ideologues alike, with estimates putting the death toll over 400 from a series of assassinations and bombings. Amidst it all, the Italian government pursued the ‘Policy of Tension’, which many saw an attempt to inflame the violence in order to bolster the demand for a security state. Landlocked and at the ancient crossroads of the Mongol, Persian, Alexandrian and British empires, Afghanistan has long held a history as a conduit for other peoples. In more recent history, the Soviet occupation from 1979 to 1989 was only succeeded very briefly by a local Taliban coalition to then be knocked out by the United States in 2001.
