The Changing World Order – Why Nations Succeed and Fail
Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, has written several books on the world of investing and the economy in general based on his years of experience as manager of the world’s largest hedge fund. In the latest of his ‘Principles’ series, Dalio applies his quantitative approach of macro investing to analyzing countries, seeking to identify the factors that lead to strength such as education and work ethic, as well as lagging indicators such as a reserve currency that allow a country to spend beyond its means but ultimately presage a fall from dominance. Notably, Dalio sees China’s rise to the top of global power as likely, with America, while ahead, slowly declining. Tonight we debate the merits of his analysis, as well as the overall validity of a global macroeconomic approach that overlooks key factors such as demographics in forecasting long term power status.

2022 Year in Review
Stagflation. Fuel Prices. Shortages. Political Turmoil. War in Europe. Roe V. Wade. Crypto Collapse. Counter-counter culture. Most years have one or two seminal, defining events that set the societal zeitgeist, but in 2022 so many events vied for attention that most people had to take time not only to revaluate what it means for the future, but also simply how to filter out the signal from the noise. Tonight we dive into the year, starting with the Ukrainian conflict, and ending with what might be emerging as an escalating one in Mexico, but in between cover the economic and cultural shakeups that continue to leave shockwaves into 2023.

The World for Sale – Commodity Trading in Uncertain Times
The exchange of goods and services has existed since the earliest forms of civilization, from simple barter arrangements at the local town square to Phoenician traders navigating the Mediterranean with goods from Europe and North Africa. Today, however, the scope of exchange is truly massive, with online commerce coming to dominate nearly all segments of retail, and the scale encompassing transoceanic trade routes totaling 11 billion tons in maritime cargoes in 2021. Underpinning all this lies an extremely complex web of producers, shippers, pipelines, warehouses, and commodities traders that include the massive concerns such as Koch Industries in energy and Glencore in metals, with over 100,000 employees each. Billions of dollars have been made and lost in commodities futures, and as volatility continues to disrupt prices of everyday items from gasoline to grain, the trend of ever tighter global trade integration seen since the end of the Cold War may start to unravel as regional blocks choose to have closer and more reliable supply chains.

Suburban Redevelopment – The Growth Ponzi Scheme
Ever since the Great Recession and financial crisis of the late 2000s, the American economic model of building large suburban housing developments with cheap credit and sometimes even cheaper building materials and standards has been called into question. Setting aside all the jobs generated in construction, banking, and other financial intermediation, municipal governments also depend on growth for taxes to pay for not just future development, but often times previous build out phases that did not meet their financial projections. With recent examples of cities such as Jackson, Mississippi and Flint, Michigan failing to cover the maintenance costs of their municipal drinking water, this financial crisis has turned into a health crisis. Tonight, I am joined by returning guest Dark Enlightenment to examine just how widespread these problems are, and potential strategies for getting you and your family away from them.

Zeihan – After Dark – the Collapse of Globalization
In the world of geopolitics, there are those that decide, and those that recommend. While it is debatable who wields more actual power, it is clear that the number of advisers, consultants, analysts, strategists and self-appointed experts clearly outweighs that of the policy makers. Peter Zeihan, a unique blend of the recommender class, has made a mark recently in business circles for his sweeping forecasts concerning broad reaching topics such as energy, supply chains, military strategy, and the devolution of the globalist world order. Tonight, after we catch up on some Halloween discourse, we speculate as to the motivations of Mr. Zeihan, as well as the implications of what he and his backers seem to see as the transformation of American leadership as the trade and security arrangements of the post-war era break down.

Unfriendly Fire – a History of False Flags
According to the BBC, “a false flag is a political or military action carried out with the intention of blaming an opponent for it. Nations have often done this by staging a real or simulated attack on their own side and saying the enemy did it, as a pretext for going to war. The term was first used in the 16th Century to describe how pirates flew the flag of a friendly nation to deceive merchant ships into allowing them to draw near.” Tonight we review some of the more disturbing examples of this phenomenon perpetrated by the US government not against a foreign entity, but rather against its own citizens, whom they are ostensibly sworn to protect.

Assassination – After Dark
With the alleged assassination of Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri by US forces and the shooting of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the past few weeks, conspiracy theories abound as to the motives behind potential realignment in global politics and the media news cycle. Also in the news is economist Jeffrey Sachs making a reappearance, apparently lending support to the theory that COVID-19 may have been a US bioweapon. With ZeroHedge coming out saying the US has no confirmation of al-Zawahiri’s death, however, and the clouds of economic recession on the horizon, we gather tonight to discuss what all this may portend for the future of the global order.

Exxon Mobil – Peak Oil and its Consequences
Since the industrial revolution and the advent of fossil fuels in place of manual labor powering nearly all aspects of civilization from agriculture to transportation to manufacturing, human productivity and population have exploded, going from under 1 billion in 1750 to a projected population of 10 billion in 2100. In the 20th century, oil became the central resource to command national economies and armies alike, playing a central role in geopolitics to this day. But as the industry faces dwindling reserves and competing alternative technologies in the 21st century, companies like ExxonMobil stand out as an unashamed proponent of hydrocarbons, being America’s largest oil and gas company and one of its most profitable. As the primary heir to the Standard Oil legacy, the company offers a unique glimpse into what America used to be, and raises the question of how much longer that can remain the case.
Clarification: the United States is still the biggest consumer of OIL of any other nation, but China is the largest ENERGY consumer in the world: https://www.statista.com/statistics/263455/primary-energy-consumption-of-selected-countries/

Sunset of the Ottomans
From the 14th through the early 20th century, the Middle East consisted of a hybrid civilization composed of various tribes and peoples stretching from the Balkans down through the Arabian Peninsula under the auspices of the Ottoman Empire. To its promoters, Constantinople administered a multicultural society that balanced ethnic and religious differences into a harmonious whole. To its detractors, the Ottoman regime was a decadent, degenerate ruling class that lived above the poverty of its servants and relied upon an endless supply of slaves to feed its military and royal harems. In the end, economic and political weakness led to the empire’s unraveling, as nationalism in the wake of the first world war broke the back of the empire and led it to the carve up into the modern Turkish state and the surrounding nations.
