Dark History of Manmade Disease - Forrest Maready, Author - DSPod #266
Forrest Maready is an author, filmmaker, and radio show host who is driven by trying to understand alternate versions of the history of religion, culture, and disease. He's written a number of books on the subject of environmental toxins and disease, which include radical revisions to the story of polio and autism. In this conversation we explore his somewhat radical perspective - that the vast majority of disease, if not all disease, is the result of industrial pollutants getting into our bodies and wreaking havoc.

Reverse Physics - Dr. Gabriele Carcassi, U. Michigan, DSPod #265
Prof. Gabriele Carcassi is a University of Michigan Physicists who became obsessed with a simple question during his training. Where do the mathematics of physics actually come from? They are handed down to us as students as if they were immutable laws of nature… but are they? Or are they simply mathematical transformations that have long ago left the realm of reality and made their home in the spheres of theory? It turns out that we really don’t know where the line between pure theory and physical reality can be drawn! Luckily, Carcassi and his research partner Prof. Christine Aidala have dedicated their time to deciphering what they call the “Assumptions of Physics,” a project which they hope will let them take apart the basic principles of the foundational science and put the whole thing back together again in a way that makes much more sense.

Could We Be This Wrong About the Solar System? - Simon Shack, Tychos - DSpod #264
Simon Shack is an amateur astronomer, independent researcher, and author. He is the modern champion of an old idea, last held in Tycho Brahe’s time, that the sun is not at the center of the solar system. At first blush, this sounds preposterous, for we have hundreds of years of data that supports the heliocentric Copernican model. But the more you listen, the more your mind melts, because not only does the data fit… it seems to fit better than the conventional model in multiple cases. We spend the conversation unpacking Simon’s model, figuring out what makes it run, the assumptions that make sense, and the loose threads that still need to be woven in. It is a WILD ride, and a truly great exploration of what it means when the same set of observations can produce a radically different interpretation.
To follow along visually, check out https://www.tychos.space/ where you can find a copy of Simon’s book and the Tychosium, a stellarium-type simulator built to show the inner workings of the model. Lets go!!!

A Sudden Savant: Futons to Fermions, Quantum Holography, and a New Calculus - Jason Padgett, #263
Today's episode features Jason Padgett, a physicist and artist whose path to a mathematical conception of reality began with a violent attack in his early 30s. We discuss this transformation after brain injury. How with zero mathematical background he found himself reinventing calculus. We discuss his attempts to bring himself into line with peers who had a very different formal training. Then we discuss his particular theoretical projects in physics. In particular he has developed a theory of informational constants of nature, which he calls holographic quantum information theory in an effort to unify quantum mechanics and Einsteinian relativity. To make sense of that we unpack concepts like cubits, hidden information, and quantum vector spin models. We close with a discussion of probabilistic reality and the nature of material reality versus mathematical models.

Morphic Realities: Picasso Physics, Myth, & The New Philosophy - Formscapes, Kehlan Morgan #261
Today on the show we are meeting up with Kehlan Morgan, from @Formscapes on YouTube. Kehlan is a master of the past and helps wrestle with a wide range of favorite philosophical dilemmas. We question whether matter can produce consciousness or if it's a separate phenomenon. We discuss intergenerational memory and Sheldrake's theory of morphic fields, proposing a collective memory beyond genetics. We examine of the distinction between description and explanation in science, and how it impacts our understanding of reality. We critique modern science's disempowering effects, including the inversion of beneficial myths and the exploitation of unseen forces. Finally we glean insights from Rudolph Steiner's work, highlighting a schism between relational reality and objective reality, questioning the dominance of physics and exploring the limitations of a monistic worldview.

What Stops Our Interstellar Future? - Devon Eriksen, Theft of Fire #260
Devon Eriksen is the author of the ongoing Space Orbital trilogy, which opened up with Theft of Fire, described as a "Shoot-em-up space opera, [of] mysterious alien artifacts, freedom-minded Belters versus corporate oligarchs..." In his work, Devon explores many of the themes we tinker with on the show - particularly the ethics of space exploration. A steadfast exploration of space-colonization, Devon brings a very different perspective to the human project not often embraced by the analytic academics we often encounter, who seem to be concerned with de-growth and the scaling back of our material economy. We talk about the role of government in space exploration, the colonial perils of the past in the context of the New Frontier, and the role of fiction in shaping objective reality.
