Susan Klein: Intuition in Coaching
Susan has been coaching/training executives and leaders for over 27 years. She was one of the first 20 coaches in the world to be awarded the Master Certified Coach credential from the International Coach Federation. She develops leadership and coaching competencies with leaders, in a thought-provoking process that produces sustainable, high-impact results. Susan calls on her extensive background in sales and sales management, having worked in broadcasting and advertising as a sales executive and regional sales manager. As a Master Certified Coach and CEO, Susan works with executives, managers, and business owners, to develop their leadership competencies in a thought-provoking process that supports them in achieving their organizational and personal goals. Change is not usually comfortable, and having an objective partner who listens, provides new insight, and moves the client forward. She speaks with individuals and teams all over the world as we coach by telephone, as well as in-person Many coaches, work exclusively on a linear level, and the results may not be long-lasting. Susan shifts people's perspective by challenging their assumptions, which provides high impact results on multiple levels.Susan is also an adjunct professor at Nova Southeast University, the University of Miami, and the University of Texas/Dallas, where she teaches Coaching Skills for Leaders and Emotional Intelligence in the workplace- with a coach approach. Some clients include AT&T, Exxon Mobile, Levi’s, Hewlett Packard, Florida Hospital, Army Corp of Engineers, and Merck. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Susan Klein discuss:Coaching brings in techniques and methods that aren't as easily learnable.Coaches need lots of practice and preparation to become great intuitive listeners. How to sense that you have lost your clients attention.Knowing that the coach's truth may be different than the client's truth.Do people fear being intuitive?Gratitude happens in the present. We can only be grateful in the moment and that moment ties us to the ability to be in the present.Key Takeaways:When do coaches tune into their intuition? For an experienced coach, it happens with hello. Listening and sensing in a physical sense who the person is and who they are being.Always set an intention to be fully present for your client. Some people just need a safe space and someone listening without judgment so they can think their ideas through out loud.Device withdrawal: take time to disconnect and be present.People want and need a personal connection. They need to be heard and understood, through an empathetic connection. Doug Diehl: Intuition in Art and Business
“Access to talented and creative people is to modern business what access to coal and iron ore was to steel-making”, according to author and thought-leader, Richard Florida. A common response we hear is that creativity is limited to a small group of people with particular talents. The misperception is that most people don’t want to be creative, couldn’t do it if asked, and would be very uncomfortable in an environment where creativity was expected of them. This belief is false. Every human is endowed with an incredible capacity for creativity and innovation. The board agreement among economists is that economic growth comes from creative or knowledge-based occupations. And, when we stifle that creativity by old-style command and control management mindsets and practices, we risk losing talented people. According to a 2004 Economist magazine article, “The real foreign threat to the America economy is not terrorism; it’s the way we make creative and talented people stop wanting to come here.”My guest on The Business of Intuition is a person who makes a living being creative. Doug Diehl is a nationally recognized painter who is known for his evocative landscape scenes of the Southwest. Doug has also started and led many small businesses and is a voracious reader of history, art and philosophy. In this fascinating discussion Doug describes:How he prepares himself to be creative,The way in which intuition is a function of creativity,How he balances both the right and left sides of the brain at the same time,How painting a picture is similar to building a company’s vision. Most importantly Doug gives us real tools to tap into our intuition and creativity and how to apply them to our lives at work. Finding inspiration in a non analytical way.Getting out of the analytical side of your brain so intuition can integrate into your process. Key Takeaways:A person’s biggest hindrance is their ego and pride. It blinds you blinds you to mistakes and new courses.Intuition and a visionary mindset, infuses passion while overriding ego and pride.Strive to evolve so that my art, my business, and my life is improving.Examining life from different perspectives and thought processes helps us look at life through different lenses. "You go beyond the rules, where intuition is. You learn to break the rules and how to break them without breaking the object." — Doug Diehl See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Doug Diehl: Website: DouglasDiehlArtist Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Dr. Marcia Reynolds: Intuition and Emotion
Dr. Marcia Reynolds, president of Covisioning LLC, is fascinated by the brain, especially what triggers feelings of connection, commitment, and possibility. She has trained and coached leaders in 41 countries and has presented at the Harvard Kennedy School and Cornell University as well as universities in Europe and Asia. Dr. Reynolds is a pioneer in the coaching profession. She was the 5th global president of the International Coach Federation. Outside of the schools, she teaches Leader as Coach classes to organizations around the world and consults with them to build coaching cultures. She is recognized by Global Gurus as the #5 coach in the world. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Marcia discuss:How to outsmart our brains and change our behavior.Recognizing intuition: our nervous system signals. That we usually make our decisions with emotions and then try to justify them with logic.Pulling our decisions out of our head and examining how our emotions played into it. Key Takeaways:It takes courage and curiosity to open your head. Gratitude, compassion, and care to open your heart. While our emotions and gut are our command center.A “Baby stare”, or an experience a person may have never encountered or made sense of before, takes time to process because we interpret things based on our past experiences.Trust yourself, step back and take a look at your emotions. Ask yourself what you expected to happen, and if you can.To develop your self awareness give yourself permission to react, and then examine the physical reaction to adapt and learn from it.Knowing the difference between an emotional reaction and my intuition. Understanding they are both possible at the same time, and both play a factor in making a conscious choice "If you can understand what triggers your emotions then maybe you can get your needs met." — Dr. Marcia Reynolds See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Dr. Marcia Reynolds: Twitter: @MarciaReynoldsWebsite: Covisioning.comEmail: Marcia@covisioning.comLinkedIn: Marcia ReynoldsBooks: The Discomfort ZoneCoach the Person Not the Problem Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Show notes by Podcastologist: Kristen Braun Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Bill Serva: Creating Space For Innovation
I once heard some of the best poetry is written by mathematicians. I notice this oddity in our work. I find some of the most creative people we encounter are engineers, scientists and IT professionals. Innovation and creativity, it seems, is not just for the actors, marketers and artists. A balance between analysis and creativity, data and out of the box thinking create a wonderful balance, and a desirable leader within a company. My next guest on the Business of Intuition possesses that balance, and more. Bill Serva has been working in IT for over 20 years across several different industries including foodservice distribution, grocery, and not for profit companies. For the last 9 years, he has worked for Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona and is currently the Vice President of Information Technology. Bill may not identify himself as intuitive, but clearly, he has a way of tapping into a cousin of intuition, creativity, and uses it to transform the way Goodwill of Central and Northern AZ is seeking to fulfill its vision of ending poverty in Arizona through the power of work. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Arizona and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. In this episode Dean and Bill discuss:Intuition as something that comes naturally, versus something you have to work at intentionally. How important it is when people have ideas or a gut feeling about things to let them explore it and see where it goes before shutting it down.Stepping outside of the data and the ground floor to see from a higher vantage point, and make connections from a different perspective.Key Takeaways: People stop creating and listening to their gut about things if they know that you're not going to listen.Good leaders surround themselves with people that balance out their weaknesses. If we want to work in an environment of trust, we need to be honest, which sometimes means having a hard conversation.Be teachable. Ask questions and reach out to other people that are good at whatever it is that you want to be good at. Great resources The innovator’s dilemma. Key Takeaways: The magic of coaching is you know the answer. A coaching client is resourceful, energetic, and ready to do the work. The more people get connected to their body and to their physical well being, the more connected to their intuition they will be.Each of us is ultimately responsible for making ourselves feel good, but we can walk beside someone on their journey. Tim O’Neal: Building A Culture Of Trust
In today’s episode of The Business of Intuition we hear how one CEO has mastered three challenges every leader, sooner or later, has to face:To accept their strengths and weaknesses and to feel deserving of the top position in the company,If needed, to remove or reassign employees in order to build and protect a strong culture,To communicate a 10-year plan when everyone else can only see quarterly goals. Tim O’Neal is CEO of Goodwill of Central and Northern AZ, and has spent the past 18 years focused on the vision of ending poverty through the power of work. When O’Neal was brought on the organization was in serious financial trouble and at risk of having its membership removed by Goodwill Industries International. O’Neal’s arrival marked a turning point in the 70-year history of the organization, and his leadership was instrumental in keeping the organization running by increasing retail operations by 3000 percent. Today Goodwill has become a community leader in educating and connecting people to meaningful work and diverting millions of pounds of goods from AZ landfills. Tim will also share valuable insights into how to:Use intuition when making key decisions,Earn the trust and loyalty from employees, Board members and community leaders,Engage people in a vision when no one can see beyond the day to day. Goodwill’s founder, Edgar Helms, envisioned providing people in need with the skills and opportunities that lead to self-sufficiency by providing a hand up, not a handout. O’Neal believes wholeheartedly in carrying out this mission to better the lives of everyone in our state. He knows the best way to bring a positive impact to Arizona is to work together, collaborate, and cultivate partnerships with community members, organizations, and leaders.O’Neal holds a Certificate in Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management from the Harvard Business School Executive Education program. O’Neal graduated in June 2010 from Goodwill Industries International’s Executive Leadership Development program, which drives excellence, strategic planning and personal development skills for top executives in the industry. In this episode Dean and Tim discuss:The danger of complacency in successful organizations and how to look out blind spots that might bring you down. How working on the culture of our organization can be one of your biggest assets, by strengthening bonds and underscoring your vision. How being able to tap into your intuition is enhanced in a culture of trust, and how to build it.Turning things around by changing mindsets, having a vision, and being able to see opportunities where others would see issues. Key Takeaways: You have to know what's going on in the business, and then to make appropriate changes.Make sure it's always people first, no matter whether it's inside or outside.Stay true to your vision, empower your people, and trust them to do their thing. Tim balances his attention to data and detail with insight and intuition. Two studies support this kind of balance: A Harvard Business Review article said that the higher up you go, the more important intuition becomes, because it makes executives better listeners, decision makers and creative problem solvers. The New Jersey Institute of Technology studied the relationship between intuition and business success and found 80 percent of executives whose companies' profits had more than doubled in the past five years had above average intuition skills.
