216: How To Rehab From A 1% Chance To Live

In episode 216, Tim Chiarolanza former S&C Coach and major trauma survivor, joins us. Specifically we will be looking at: How diet and sleep improved his rehabilitation The importance of exercise science in rehabilitation What athletes can learn from his journey About Tim : "Tim Chiarolanza is a major trauma survivor. After spending over a decade working to achieve his dream job, including two stints working in professional baseball as a minor league strength and conditioning coach, he was named the head of strength and conditioning at his Alma mater, Lycoming College. He spent about six weeks in the position before he was accidentally struck by a car on November 16, 2021 while chasing after his dog, whose leash had broken during a walk. He suffered life-threatening injuries, including a ruptured aorta in his heart. He has a traumatic brain injury that did not show up until three days following the accident. He was Life Flighted to Geisinger Medical Center, where he was given a 1% chance of survival. Following his time in the ICU at the hospital, he was transferred to Bryn Mawr Hospital for inpatient rehab. He was released from inpatient rehab at the end of January 2022. He currently lives in Doylestown, Pennsylvania with his wife and their dog, Finn, who was uninjured running into the street. He is currently starting a non-profit called Triumph In Recovery which assists people who have traumatic brain injuries, which Tim still suffers from due to his accident, trauma survivors, and stroke survivors. He is also writing a book, a peer mentor for brain injury patients at his rehab hospital, and working to begin a speaking career because he wants to help as many people as possible with his survival.
