Dr. Irani’s research broadly investigates the cultural politics of high-tech work practices with a focus on how actors produce “innovation” cultures.

Her work investigates the social dimensions of science, medicine, and technology with a focus on the relationship between innovation and inequity, health and justice, knowledge, and power.

Dr. Sarah Myers West is a postdoctoral researcher at the AI Now Institute. Her research centers on the critical study of technology and culture, with an emphasis on historical and ethnographic methods.
Dr. West is currently working on a project that addresses the politics of diversity and inclusion in technological communities by exploring the nexus of artificial intelligence, gender, and intersectionality. She received her doctoral degree from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California in 2018, where her dissertation examined the cultural history and politics of encryption technologies from the 1960s to the present day.

Shamika was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, and is the oldest of four children. Attending math and engineering camps for fun in junior high and high school, Shamika was excited about learning and eager to help save the world. After graduating from Stanford University, she served a year with AmeriCorps through Reading Partners in Queens and decided to stay in New York City. She went on to study technology and ethics at Union Theological Seminary in the city of New York and is thrilled to be serving others as a Tech Chaplain. She currently attends CU Boulder's iSchool studying technology, ethics, and social justice issues.
