# 204: How To Finally Stop Allowing Imposter Syndrome To Stunt Your Career Growth With Jaz Marfo
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast we have Jaz M, coach for ambitious careers and communities and we are going to be having discussion about imposter syndrome. The reason why I want to focus on this is to make people aware that Impostor syndrome is not inherently bad. The shame that comes with it is that's bad and that's the actual debilitating part underneath it.Episode Highlights:· 1.31: Jaz has been coaching for five years and she is passionate about working with high achievers to lift the limits of our careers to avoid burnout, overwhelmed and underwhelmed and its thing that we try to avoid in our careers.· 4.36: A report that was done last year by KPMG said that 75% of female executives had experienced imposter syndrome in their career, and that number is higher for women of colour.· 9.43: If you get the feedback from leadership relationship, then you can improve and if you can improve, it's going to be good for everybody and you are entitled to take feedback because you are in the role.· 25.27: When syndrome is in the personal life, there are no hobbies, there are no relationships, there are no passions.· 31.18: Having little sentence endings that are ultimately invitations to action from the people that let them know that I am not sharing for the sake of sharing, and I am part of the active discussion can be grateful.· 34.20: For a lot of us, certain phrases or certain experiences can really, really tighten our experience of imposter syndrome and when we start to decode that, then that's the beginning of coming along but leaving the shame behind. What you will learn:Imposter syndrome is the experience of not believing you are as competent as others perceive you to be, which essentially means that you are worrying about what you think other people think. It is multi-sensory experience. One of the things that we tend to overlook when we talk about imposter syndrome is understanding how much our environment plays into it because many of us, especially an executive level, we are operating in an environment that wasn't necessarily made for us.One of the biggest flags that you could be experiencing imposter syndrome is secret over time. It's something that we do at some stage. It does serve us in some moments and in other ways it does.Growth mindset is essentially a belief that you can improve by efforts and fix mindset is no matter what my efforts are, it is what it is.Connect with Jaz Marfo on JustJaz.co or Linkedin Other episodes you may enjoy:Episode 203: How Building A Personal Brand Landed Me Game Changing OpportunitiesEpisode 202 : 3 Top Trends That Will Affect Your Career Development in 2023THIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramSend us a text

# 203: How Building A Personal Brand Landed Me Game Changing Opportunities
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast, I talk about personal branding. What it looks like to be building a personal brand and then why it can be impactful? The reason why I want to focus on this is to show you that building of the brand is essentially your way of showing up and sharing with the world what you want to share. Because you show up, because you share, then opportunities can come your way. Episode Highlights:· 02.05: I start by explaining personal brand, what does that mean? · 03.02: I talk a little bit about the defined phase and why it's so important to slow down when you are thinking about the fact that you need to show up more and the fact that you need to build a personal brand, you need to really define what it is. · 04.12: I am going to talk to you through my journey so I can illustrate how I have gone about building out my personal brands. · 06.42: I wanted to help other people with their career transitions to figure out what they want to do, to support them with making the transition and so that is what I wanted to be known for. · 9.15: If you want to be more intentional about your brand, you don't have to have it all figured out straight away. It's about you doing stuff, testing it, seeing what works for you, what you like and then overtime you can refine what it is you are actually doing and what you are putting out there.· 11.17: I want to share my perspective about careers to actually building a profitable coaching business and becoming a corporate trainer and being invited to speak on stages.· 14.50: If you decide to build a personal brand about something that you're passionate about. You get to make an impact without waiting for it to come through your employer · 18.13: In 2019 I did a TEDx talk, and I shared about the key ingredient for your breakthrough. How do you go about getting your career breakthrough? What you will learn: There are a lot of different platforms that people talk about when it comes to building a personal brand, but it's important to take stock and not get overwhelmed. One of the biggest pieces around building your personal brand is sharing your perspective.Networking is just building relationships. So, once you know what you want to be known for and you start talking about that in whatever format that is for you then you are in a position to start finding other like-minded people who are interested in the same thing. When building your own personal brand, you get to show up and you get to do what you want to do in terms of building your brand consistently and then there are people out there that will be impacted and touched by your brand, and you don't even realize it. # 202: 3 Top Trends That Will Affect Your Career Development in 2023
Happy New Year!!We are at the beginning of another year. I know we always say things like time is flying by or can't believe its the new year already...but boy is it TRUE. Today, I want to talk about anticipated workplace trends in 2023. When you are contemplating making moves in your career, it is important to not do it in vacuum and instead consider the landscape and context in which you are operating. Here are three to trends to consider as you plan for your career development this year:Quiet hiring - Despite the news of large scale layoffs, the market is likely to get more competitive when it comes to engaging top talent. So HR leaders will turn to 'quiet hiring' to support with business needs. They will look to support existing employees with reskilling, or upskilling to meet demands of the business rather than only relying on a new hires to get the job done.Non-traditional candidates - Organisations are diversifying their talent pools. They will get more and more comfortable with assessing candidates on their ability to fulfill the role rather than their credentials or proven prior experrience. Great news if you are looking to pivot or leap into something else. More focus on Wellbeing - There is more recognition that just because we feel like we have more hour to work (having removed commuting time) it doesn't mean working all of the time is productive. We are designed to rest on a daily weekly seasonal and annual cycles. Our bodies are not supposed to be operating non-stop like machines. As more employers recognise this and encourage employees to embrace rest periods, the better for everyone. Check out the Gartner article referenced in the episode. # 201: 3 Ways To Finish The Year Strong
It's the end of the year and a time when many people start thinking about and planning for the new year.Planning and new year's resolutions are great... but are often not enough to actually lead to change. Too often people try and make huge dramatic shifts without setting themselves up for success. What You Will Learn:AuditGoal or Intention SettingSetting Yourself Up For SuccessAudit - We move through life so quickly, I literally feel like the year has gone by in a flash. When you are focused on doing and achieving, it is so easy to lose track of all that has happened. Now is the perfect time to be doing an audit around your life and your career. What went well this year? What didn't go well this year and why? When you have identified those, you can move onto step number 2.Don't skip this step, when I did my audit, I realised that we had lots of wins on the scoreboard that I hadn't remembered. Clients served, contracts won, a live event, podcast growth etc.Goal or Intention Setting - What do you want to achieve or create in the next year? You can set those high-level goals but be mindful to make them realistic. Taking a holistic approach is a good idea, so that it is not all about work but other wellness goals too. Health, fitness, sleep... because if you are not taking care of those things, it's harder to achieve in the other areas. Setting Yourself Up For Success - Clarify the commitment, resources and support required to make the goals you set in number 2 a reality. If one of your goals is to work out a few times a week, what are you going to put in place to make that happen? Will you hire a personal trainer or get a gym buddy? If your goal is to get promoted by the end of Q1, will you be hiring a coach or finding a mentor to support you on your growth trajectory? The reason many people set new year's resolutions that fail before the end of February is that they don't focus enough on the day-to-day tasks that need to be done for the bigger goal to actually be met.If you want help with this process - book a Career UpLevel Intensive. We will work together to map out your career advancement plan for 2023. You tell me what you want to achieve and I will help you come up with a bespoke strategy that is aligned to you and your preferences.Beyond the yearly plan start thinking about your quarterly goals. # 200: 5 Career Advancing Lessons I Learned From Running This Podcast
In today's episode, I'm talking about the 5 career advancing lessons that I've learned from running this podcast and producing 200 episodes. Here are 5 lessons learned that are relevant to you as it relates to your career development:Momentum comes from taking consistent actionWhat you communicate is not always the same as what is received by your audienceYou never know who is watchingYour perspective mattersThere are so many other people who are in your shoesMomentum comes from taking consistent action - When I first started the podcast, I would get maybe 10 or 20 downloads a week, and then maybe 50 or 100 downloads a week... and now we are going into having thousands of downloads in a week, and I didn't think that was possible when we were only getting a few downloads. The momentum came with just keeping going and just showing up time and time again. When it comes to your career, I want you to remember that, sometimes you can be taking action and may not be seeing the results, recognition, growth or development. But keep showing up.What you communicate is not always the same as what is received - This is the 3rd iteration of the podcast. When we first started, I was too focused on what I wanted to call the show rather than a name that people would be able to find. It wasn't until we rebranded to the podcast to the "Career Change Maker Podcast", based on feedback that I was getting from clients, that people started to find the show easily. When you are positioning yourself for opportunities make sure you communicate in a way that helps the hiring manager see you as an ideal candidate, rather than focus on what you want to focus on. You never know who is watching - I'm sitting here behind a microphone and I can see how many people are listening but I don't know WHO is listening. What is beautiful for me and what I absolutely love is when I receive messages from people on LinkedInYou might not recognise that the work you're doing IS being recognised, so continue to show up because you never know who's listening, who's watching and where opportunities might come in the future.Your perspective matters - Even if there are lots of people applying for the job that you want to go for, recognise that there's only one YOU and your perspective and your approach to things absolutely matters. Recognise you have a unique perspective, and a unique blend of experience, to bring to the table. Own that. There are so many other people who are in your shoes - We have people from different parts of the world, from different industries, from different backgrounds and yet similar challenges come up time and time again for them. You are not the only one.Become a CCM Podcast Insider Other episodes you may enjoy:Episode 198: Why You Should Frequently Audit Your Own PerformanceEpisode199: The Power Of Metrics In Your CareerTHIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramThis episode is sponsored by BlinkistPerfect for curious people who love to learn, busy people who don’t have time to read, and even people who aren’t Send us a text

# 199: The Power Of Metrics In Your Career
In today's episode I am talking about why metrics matter in your career.I have noticed amongst people who seem to excel in terms of their development and advancement vs those that just do okay is that those that excel pay attention to metrics.Metrics are something that's really simple but not necessary something that you pay attention to when life gets busy and work gets hectic. When you pay attention to your progress it's easier for you to recognise your growth. Think about what you should be measuring. The other side of metrics is where you will find results. Result matter to you, results matter to your organisation. So often when I work with people around optimising their CV or positioning themselves for new opportunities internally and externally, the results piece is missing. Understanding the results in terms of what you individually did, translates into the larger results for the organisation. What you will learn:Tracking your progress: If you're not tracking what it is you're doing, it is really difficult to say whether or not you're doing it well. Keeping track of your progress also allows you see whether you have stayed on the right track or whether you have deviated. Receiving feedback: Asking for feedback when you feel that you are ready, so you get a clear understanding of your process and what is expected from you. Don't necessary have to wait for the annual review, ask for more regular check-in points. Mental and physical health: Making sure your mental health and physical health is protected, so that you can keep driving your goals forward. Be sure to get enough sleep, exercise and eat well. # 198: Why You Should Frequently Audit Your Own Performance
In today's episode I will be talking about why you should frequently audit your own performance in the context of the work place. There are so many occasions when I speak to clients that I'm working with who are ready to step up in their careers, who are ready to articulate the value they bring to an organisation. When we start looking for the evidence and looking for the examples of the work they've completed, the impact they have already made, they struggle to bring everything together.Often times we want and rely on a structure that's put in place within an organisation. i.e. the annual review. That is not often enough - we can't just rely on the organisation or the job search process to make us do the work that we should be doing throughout our journeys... the work that we should be doing on a consistent basis. If you're being intentional about the goals you are setting around your career development, then you're able to be intentional about tracking the results that you're getting. If you are not taking time to decided what it is you're trying to achieve, it's difficult to track it and if you're not tracking it, it's difficult to talk about it... and if you're not talking about it, it's difficult to get recognised for it.What you will learn:How to audit every 90 days: By doing an audit every quarter, you are taking time to plan ahead and decide what is it that you want to achieve in the next quarter. The 3 things you need to focus on when doing your audit are: what are your personal goals? What are the company's goals? How do your goals align with the company's goals? When you understand what you want to do and your goals align with the company, it's so much easier for you to draw out the value that you bring. Identifying your strengths: Lean into what you're good at and how you do things best. You're likely to get to where you want to get to quicker doing this, rather than trying to do something in a pre-prescribed way that doesn't align.Importance of auditing: When you are in your day-to-day role, it's easy to lose track of the goals you have set. Setting your goals and doing an audit for the next quarter is helping you keep on track.Other episodes you may enjoy:Episode 192: How To Get A Six Figure Salary Increase During Your Career Change With Scott BarlowEpisode 197: Moving Past Negative Work ExperiencesTHIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramThis episode is sponsored by BlinkistPerfect for curious people who love to learn, busy people who don’t have time to read, and even people who aren’t into reading. # 197: Moving Past Negative Work Experiences
In today's episode, I will be talking about moving past negative work experiences. This is something that has come up a few times in coaching sessions lately, so I have a feeling it will resonate with quite a few of you. I was working with one particular client who was ready to step up to a more senior position. We were exploring what it is that she wanted to do, where she wanted to go and how she would need to position herself.Once we knew the answers to these, I noticed there was a bit of resistance from her in taking the steps to make it happen. My client's resistance was coming from her negative experiences with her previous employer. We had to really peel back all the layers and identify the positive lessons learned through the negative experience.Once she identified the lessons, we were then able to make changes that aligned better to what she wanted, so she wouldn't have to come across the same negative experience again in a different environment. What you will learn:Addressing negative experiences- If you don't address the way a negative experience has impacted you, you are likely to bring that into a new role where you have the opportunity to do things differently.Recognising the lessons- Instead of taking the negative experience with you, look at it as a lesson. You now have a new opportunity to do things differently in a new environment.Other episodes you may enjoy:Episode 194: How To Know What Type Of Career Coaching Support Would Be Best For YouEpisode 196: Finding Your Passion Through Change With Elena AgaragimovaTHIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramThis episode is sponsored by BlinkistWant more knowledge in less time? # 196: Finding Your Passion Through Change With Elena Agaragimova
In today's episode I have a very interesting interview with my guest, Elena, about her inspiring career change transition.Elena started her career in higher education, which she found to be slow-paced, so she then shifted to corporate learning, working with the younger generation. In 2019, Elena explains while she was based in Dubai she co-founded a company call Bessern with a business partner. Bessern focuses on performance well-being in organisations. She was also involved in various other projects, such as building up talent pipelines for small companies.Elena shares that in the beginning of her career transition, she didn't really have a strategy, "Having an idea about what you want to do is a starting point, it doesn't have to be all mapped out, but consider what you like, what you don't like and what things give you energy." Elena talks about being mindful of not making an 'emotional' decision. We often want to make a change when we're in a state of emotional burnout but this isn't the best place to be making a decision from. Be self-aware and honest with yourself, ask yourself "what am I running away from and what I am running towards?"Elena has always had a side hustle and over the years corporate learning and development has been one of them. "I have always been experimenting, I always had a 9-5, but I was creating opportunities for myself, by doing random projects and paid or unpaid work".Towards the end of 2019 she started to get a lot of clients of her own, which meant she would have to take time off work and use her vacation time to do sessions. She started thinking maybe this was the time to do this full time, as she was feeling overwhelmed with her work. What you will learn:Identifying roles you are interested in: If you have an idea you are interested in, be open to it. Experiment with it, find platforms and networks that can support your journey. The importance of networking: Source opportunities, either paid or voluntary, to build confidence in areas which you think your confidence or experience is lacking.Creating opportunities for yourself: Experiment with your idea, try different ways to achieve your goal. Fully putting yourself out there increases your chance of opportunities.Connect with Elena Agaragimova on LinkedIn or BessernOther episodes you may enjoy:Episode174: How My Career Changed For The Better After Covid-19 Lock DownEpisode 175: What Common Career Mistake Lawyers Make That Keeps Them Feeling StuckTHIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramThis episode is sponsored by BlinkistWant more knowledge in less time? # 195: When You Feel Resistance To Change, Keep Going
In today's episode I am talking about when you feel resistance to change, keep going. When you are contemplating a career move or your in the process of figuring it out, it is likely that you are going to experience resistance. Reistance can come in different forms, internal and external. Im going to talk about both forms but more focus on the internal resistance. My client I'm talking about has been making incredible progress inside the program, she identified what she doesn't want to do, she clarified some options she wants to pursuit. What my client is feeling right now is normal. If you are in your comfort zone, if you have been in your role to a lot of years, you are comfortable in your role, your comfortable doing your job how you have been doing it for so many years, it's what you know. Now when you decide to step outside of your comfort zone, your subconscious mind is like "what are we doing. why are we doing this?" This is where the resistance comes in but you need to be able to keep going, it doesn't mean you should give up, if you feel the resistance it means you are stepping out of your comfort zone, you are opening up for different experiences. Resistance is a good thing it shows your taking action and doing the uncomfortable things that are required in order for you to move from A-B.Its very important to ask yourself "why am embarking on this journey, what is my motivation" when you start to doubt yourself, you can always go back to your "why" and get re-fuelled to continue on your journey. What you will learn:The power of resistance - When you have decided that you want to make a career move and you embark on your journey, it is normal for you to feel some resistance. You are coming out of your comfort zone, so the experience will inevitably feel a little challenging. But never give up - it is definitely possible for YOU.Using external factors - We have all heard that saying: "you have to be in it to win it" and this definitely applies when you want to make that career change. You will have to be consistent and prepared to put yourself fully out there. Just sending one or two CVs to companies once every week or applying for the odd job here and there is not going to give you the result you are looking for.Identify the "why" of your journey - Take some time to reflect and ask yourself: "why do I want to make a career move and what is the motivation?" Getting clarity around what that is, is going to help with your transition when the resistance starts setting in.Other episodes you may enjoy:Episode 176: 3 Ways To Get Recognition For The Amazing Job You Are Already Doing Episode 181: How This Lawyer Pivoted Into An Unconventional Legal Role That Is Perfect For HerTHIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMIf you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >> https://www.careerchangemakers.com/ccmprogramThis episode is sponsored by BlinkistWant more knowledge in less time?
