From The Mouths Of Our Bishops

Our bishops are elected to provide general oversight to the worldly and spiritual interest of the Church. With 46 active bishops in the US alone there are going to understandably be a wide range of different personalities and believes on different topics. In this video we are trying something different, we look at three of our bishops in the United States and evaluate some of the things they have said. To get the full context of what was said please take the time to watch the whole videos that were put out by the bishops, we only address a few short instances within these larger videos, they are listed below for your convenience. The Curious Case of Bishop Carcaño

Bishop Minerva Carcaño was suspended from her position (with pay) as Bishop of California-Nevada Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church pending an investigation into charges made against her. One year later it doesn't seem that much has happened, now a board within the organization wants to get involved to determine what is causing the delay. We look into what is happening with Bishop Carcaño and what little information has been made available to the public.Show Notes:Bishop Profile:https://www.unitedmethodistbishops.org/person-detail/2464065Agency Seeks Role Article:https://um-insight.net/in-the-church/finance-and-administration/agency-seeks-role-in-complaint-against-bishop/Culture Of Secrecy Article:https://um-insight.net/perspectives/is-the-umc-s-first-latina-bishop-a-victim-of-its-culture-of-/Conference Sue For Control Article:https://www.umnews.org/en/news/conference-bishop-sue-for-control-of-glideAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands This is a public episode. Bitter Medicine: Realities of Church Membership

Church membership is important. Sometimes our local church membership rolls look much different than the reality of a Sunday morning. When churches vote to leave the UMC and members suddenly show up that haven't been to church in years who is really at fault? And should we be mad at the Annual Conference for trying to contact members directly? Here is a short video directed at that very subject, we will release a longer video going further in depth later, let us know which format you prefer and don't for get to subscribe and share our content if you find it helpful!Link to Dr. David Scott's Article: https://www.umnews.org/en/news/the-many-meanings-of-connectionalismAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands This is a public episode. African UM Bishop Promises Being Renegotiated

At the 2016 General Conference, it was agreed by those assembled that African United Methodism, where the most explosive growth in membership is, would finally receive more bishops to help oversee the growth. However, financial realities have resulted in those in authority openly speaking about reneging on this commitment in order to continue siphoning money to areas on the denomination that are shrinking. I explore the ethics and implications of such a decision, sharing some additional resources to see just how much influence (or lack of influence) African United Methodists have been given in the denomination.Links consulted:https://www.umnews.org/en/news/challenges-face-plan-to-add-5-african-bishopshttps://www.umnews.org/en/news/group-plans-for-budget-cuts-regionalizationhttps://www.umnews.org/en/news/international-group-pursues-regionalizationhttps://juicyecumenism.com/2023/01/07/united-methodist-apportionments/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands This is a public episode. Interview with Rev. Joe DiPaolo (Pastor of FUMC of Lancaster PA)

Rev. Joe DiPaolo is the head pastor at FUMC Lancaster in Pennsylvania. He published an article last year, detailing the behavior of the Commission on General Conference, from which he had resigned after they seemed to conduct the business of their committee without fulfilling basic mandates. Jeffrey reached out to him out of a desire to flesh out the tradeoffs of confidentiality and other dynamics in the UMC. It turns out DiPaolo is a learned history buff, and he has a number of other insights to understand the current situation in the UMC. Anyone who takes time to learn from Rev. DiPaolo will be blessed. What's Going On In The Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference?

We continue our look at the various Annual Conferences across the United States, this time we look at the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. This conference was recently sued by 38 churches within the conference who are attempting to leave the denomination but were disheartened by what they saw as unfair conditions placed on leaving. Unlike most Annual Conferences the Board of Trusties here has implemented a 50% "fair market value of real estate" condition before any church can disaffiliate from the UMC.Show Notes:Moving The Needle Article:https://wesleyancovenant.org/2022/10/10/moving-the-needle/Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference Website:https://www.bwcumc.orgLegal Article:https://peopleneedjesus.files.wordpress.com/2023/02/the-methodist-church-of-cape-st.-claire-et-al.-vs.-the-baltimore-washington-conference-of-the-united-methodist-church-et-al.pdfBishop Easterling's Response:https://www.bwcumc.org/news-and-views/churches-sue-bwc-over-disaffiliation/WCA Response:https://wca-bwc.orgAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands This is a public episode. Interview with Jay Therrell (President of the WCA)

Rev. Jay Therrell has been at the forefront of advocacy for churches who want to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church for years. He stands at the helm of the Wesleyan Covenant Association, which is acting to serve as a "midwife" for the Global Methodist Church. Jay is often maligned for representing part of the 'Reform and Renewal' coalition. In this conversation, Jeffrey directly asks him about a number of allegations made by different voices within the UMC. This is an opportunity to assess whether or not the behavior and words of a public figure match the caricature that is painted. Jay was very gracious with his time and energy. Thanks for giving of yourself, Jay!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands This is a public episode. Processing the State of the Church Address

On March 2, 2023, Bishop Thomas Bickerton of the New York Annual Conference, President of the Council of Bishops, released a "State of the Church" that said a lot, explicitly and implicitly, about how he and the leadership of The United Methodist Church are currently understanding the division in this denomination. Jeffrey took some time to isolate some selections from the presentation to try to help others see, and to help him see, what can be responsibly determined from Bishop Bickerton's words.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands This is a public episode.
