Theology Applied

Joshua reminds the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh of the advantages they had received in being the first tribes settled. The Lord had already appointed to them a particular land for rest, which apparently was uncontested. And yet, they are commanded by Joshua to aid their brothers in the fight for their land so that they might enjoy God's rest together. This principle has spiritual application regarding those saints who have been blessed with further sanctification (greater degrees of deliverance and rest from particular sins), as well as practical application regarding those saints who have been blessed with further providence (accumulated wealth, established business, raised children, long and healthy marriages, etc). It is noble to aspire to the office of an overseer in the church, and it is likewise noble to aspire to the office of a magistrate in the civil realm.

This sermon was preached at Covenant Bible Church on the Lord's Day, April 30th, 2023. In Joshua 2:9, Rahab says, “The FEAR of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.” And again, in Joshua 2:11, Rahab says, “And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you.” One of the chief evidences, which caused Rahab to be convinced that her people were under God's judgment and doomed to be destroyed by their enemies (Israel), was the FEAR of her people. Fear is not only a sin, it's a sign of being under a curse.
