This past Friday Kash Patel was sworn in as the director of the FBI. In a trend that has picked up steam, Director Patel took his oath of office not on the Bible, but on the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu scripture. While we’re big fans of Kash Patel cleaning house of the corruption that the FBI has come to embody, what exactly does it say for the future of our still majority Christian nation when our representatives and office holders pledge their allegiance to these United States under the witness of demon gods? Can a house divided stand? Now to be clear, the Constitution states in Article 6 that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” And unfortunately, the founders, for the most part, literally meant that. Thomas Jefferson, for example, celebrated an amendment in a bill to protect all religions in Virginia that explicitly removed the name of Jesus Christ and wrote that the legislators were intent on protecting “the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan, the Hindoo, and Infidel of every denomination” from any type of discrimination. Expanded religious freedoms like this at the state level prior to ratification of the Constitution in 1788 paved the way for the vague, secular language of our constitution that we know today.So what do we do with this? Perhaps at the time, coming out of intense religious persecution, insistence on complete religious freedom was necessary to stave off the unholy union of church authority wielding the power of the state. But today, with religious pluralism and the decline of the West, what was perhaps once necessary to protect against overzealousness, is now a roadblock. Kash delightedly declared at CPAC that the American Dream is for everyone. But is it? Does the prosperity and opportunities of America belong to the world with all her various cultures and religions? If you've spent any time in Christian Twitter circles over the past few years, you’ve probably come across the name Patriarchy Hannah. With her bold advocacy for traditional femininity, biblical patriarchy, and the "trad-wife" lifestyle, she built a following of nearly 30,000 people and positioned herself as a voice in the online push for Christian homemaking and submission. She claimed to be a devoted wife, married to a contractor named Tony, and a mother to 14 children. Her posts were filled with strong rebukes of modern feminism, encouragements for women to embrace submission, and even some sharp critiques of other Christian women in the public sphere. But as of this past week, everything about Patriarchy Hannah has unraveled. The account has been exposed as a fabrication, run not by a married mother of 14, but by a single, childless woman named Jennifer, a 37-year-old from Arkansas. A deep dive into public records, receipts, and past online activity revealed that her husband Tony doesn’t exist, her family life was invented, and the house she claimed her husband built was actually constructed by a completely unrelated developer. Now, some are celebrating this revelation as proof that the entire online patriarchal movement is built on deception. They argue that "trad" influencers are cosplayers, and that many who follow them are ‘fetishists.’So, what does this all mean? To be sure, Patriarchy Hannah deceived many and has publicly apologized. But this does not mean that the goals of patriarchy and the trad-wife movement are illegitimate. John Knox’s polemic “The First Blast of the Trumpet against the monstrous regiment of Women” Knox wrote that to promote a woman to bear rule, superiority, dominion or empire above any realm, nation or city is repugnant to nature, insulting to GOD and subversion of good order, equity, and justice. And John Knox, in keeping with the scripture, is exactly right. To promote women to rule as Senators, Presidents, lawyers, generals, and CEO’s isn’t an “agree to disagree” issue, it erodes the bedrock of stability and good order that is necessary for flourishing societies and cannot be tolerated. Nowhere is the truth of Knox’s warning more visibly on display than in today’s “conservative” “Christian” women in leadership. Take Kristan Hawkins, an “anti-abortion” activist and president of Students for Life of America for example. Here’s a woman who has spent her life as a “conservative” in public service defending the unborn. But under just a little bit of scrutiny we discovered this week that she’s a mother who is daily abandoning her own sick and dying children while living high on the hog off a $300k salary from donations. Then, when an abolition bill finally made it to the North Dakota Legislature, Ms. Hawkins and Students for Life vociferously OPPOSED equal protection for unborn children.
