Patty Jenkins Talks Wonder Woman 1984, Gal Gadot, DC Films & More
We have another all-time interview this week with director Patty Jenkins joining the show to talk about Wonder Woman 1984. She gets into her feelings on the theatrical cut of Justice League, the influence Indiana Jones has on Steve Trevor's character, working on the score with Hans Zimmer and so much more. It's a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes tidbits, and one of our favorite interviews yet. In the main section of the show, we dig into the earth-shattering announcement that Warner Bros. plans to release its entire slate on their HBO Max streaming platform day-and-date with theaters. Alfred Molina has apparently been confirmed for Spider-Man 3, and we get into our theories for what this next Spider-Man film might be turning into. Our weekly BlendGame picks back up with a fun topic about who our favorite directors which started in the industry as actors are. Next week, you can play along with #OriginalReleaseBlend to let us know what culturally impactful film would you most want to go back and experience during its original release, and the effect it had on audiences. Sean Astin Talks The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson & More
Samwise himself Sean Astin joins us this week for a wonderful interview all about The Lord of the Rings. It's rare that you get to interview a cast member of a beloved franchise, and even more rare to get to interview about said franchise. We had a blast chatting with Sean Astin about his last scene on set, gallivanting about New Zealand with a cool guy like Ian McKellen, the time Peter Jackson crushed him with a single note, and so much more. It really turned out to be a highlight reel of awesome Lord of the Rings stories. In the bulk of the show, we discuss Wonder Woman 1984's move to HBO Max. (Note: this was recorded before the bombshell news of Warner Bros. 2021 slate. More on that next week.) Sean and Jake wee able to interview George Clooney recently, and so they gush about the process and his unbelievable levels of charm before getting into the movies dropping this week. Finally, we celebrate Angela Bassett's staggering talent and career with our BlendGame. A Quiet Place Spinoff, Mank Reviews & The Nelms Brothers Guest
Writer/directors Eshom and Ian Nelms join the show to discuss their new dark comedy, holiday flick Fatman (starring Walton Goggins, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Mel Gibson). The movie follows Santa Claus who's had a hit placed on him by a disappointed child. We also got word that Jeff Nichols (Mud, Midnight Special) has been tapped to write and direct a spinoff in the Quiet Place universe, and that Netflix is testing a more tradition, linear programming channel in France. It's a big week for film releases. We give our impressions of Hillbilly Elegy (starring Amy Adams, Glenn Close), David Fincher's Mank (starring Gary Oldman, Lily Collins), and Freaky (starring Vince Vaughn, Kathryn Newton). If you think you'll enjoy Freaky, be sure to check out our interview with Vince in ReelBlend #142. He was another wonderful fit for the show. And finally, this week we honor the late Sean Connery's work with a discussion on our favorite films and performances from his legendary career.
