The A to Z English Podcast | My Worst Flight

In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Xochitl and Jack discuss the worst flights they have ever taken.Transcript:00:00:00JackYou're listening to the A-Z English podcast.00:00:13JackWelcome to the A-Z English podcast. My name is Jack and I'm here with my co-host social. And today we're going to do a quick talk episode where we just chat about a a random topic and today's topic is what's the worst flight you have ever taken?00:00:33JackAnd so so it sounds like you have a really good story.00:00:37JackFor this one.00:00:39XochitlYeah, I do. I do. Jack. You know, towards the end of my time in Korea, I really was homesick. I wanted to go back and interestingly, didn't want to go back to the US. I wanted to go back to Mexico. I hadn't been back to Mexico since the pandemic started because I was trying to be mindful of COVID. And a lot of people don't have the same.00:01:00XochitlAccess to healthcare and to vaccination like we did in the US and in South Korea. So I hadn't gone back and I I was just really sick and tired of.00:01:13XochitlYou know, being in Korea at that point and I wanted to go home. I was just homesick. So I.00:01:22XochitlBought my flight back to Mexico after I quit my job and I think I initially was thinking about it just being a vacation that I might come back to Korea. But I I just never went.00:01:33XochitlBack and the flight. Yeah. The flight was really, really insane. I flew with Asiana Airlines.00:01:43JackYeah, I've taken them before, yeah.00:01:45발표자It was so.00:01:47XochitlBad. Oh my God, it's.00:01:48XochitlA really long flight. It was from South Korea, so South Korea to San Francisco.00:01:55XochitlAnd you use like a 17 hour flight and.00:02:00XochitlThe aircraft that we were in for some reason had these really tiny seats. No one could like. I'm not a big person and neither were most of people sitting around me, but no one could like fit properly because they were so small. So everyone had their feet out in the aisles, including myself, you know, you know how short I am. Like, my foot had to be on the aisle.00:02:20XochitlCause it was so cramped and.00:02:23XochitlThe seats were really uncomfortable and they're like at.00:02:25XochitlAn angle so you couldn't really sleep.00:02:30XochitlAnd I was like, against the back wall, so I couldn't recline my chair at all.00:02:36XochitlThe food was OK. I think that was the only thing that was not.00:02:40XochitlHorrible. And they gave you these little mini toothpaste. So we're really cute. But besides that, it was so bad and I was just.00:02:49XochitlI was so sleepy probably by that.00:02:51XochitlPoint I had a really bad headache I.00:02:52XochitlFelt horrible and I.00:02:55XochitlGot so and I it's not like I can.00:02:58XochitlCrash thing. I take a flight from San Francisco to Mexico City and then Mexico City to Oaxaca. So I think I the whole travel time was probably around 48 hours, of which I didn't get. Like any sleep really. In fact, I didn't get any sleep maybe a couple hours here and there. And by the end.00:03:17XochitlI had such a bad migraine that I was.00:03:20XochitlLike about to throw up. I just felt horrible. Horrible. I will never do that again. I will never do the, you know, 8 hours thing. No, it's not worth it. It's just not worth it.00:03:35JackThe three stops, yeah.00:03:36XochitlSo I would.00:03:39XochitlYeah, just it's crazy. I would just stay in San Francisco for a few nights and take another, you know, take the flight next to out to Mexico after a couple of days or something. Just like plan around it. But I would never, ever do that.00:03:54JackYou know.00:03:54XochitlHow about you, Jack? How was?00:03:56XochitlWhat's your worst?00:03:57JackWell, I've taken that airline before too, but I had a good experience. I don't know, maybe you know.00:04:02XochitlEveryone tells me that everyone's like I had a good experience.00:04:04XochitlI'm like, well, I don't know what to tell you. That was really. Yeah.00:04:07JackYeah, yeah, maybe it was just the that one plane or something. It was, yeah, I the worst flight I ever I've ever taken was from Bangkok to San Francisco. So pretty. Similar to what you were describing, but.00:04:12XochitlI think so.00:04:24JackThe problem was I waited too long to get my ticket so I wasn't able to. I'm 6 foot eight. I mean, that's tall. I'm super tall and so I remember getting a flight where.00:04:38JackIt's like uh, I'm in the middle of the row, so there's a person on my left and a person on my right. And I always take the aisle so that I can stick my feet.00:04:52JackWhen you know everybody's sleeping overnight, when everything settles down, I can stick my feet out and I can. It gives me just a little bit of of stretching ability, but this time I was stuck in between two big guys. And then there's me, the biggest guy in there and we're all just crammed in and I'm.00:05:12JackI'm the I'm in the middle of this sandwich, you know, and.00:05:19JackAnd it was a 14 hour flight and the lady in front of me immediately puts her chair all the way back.00:05:26JackSo my I can't even it's like the tray food tray is basically.00:05:32JackHitting me like in the stomach or like hitting my knees and so I've got this. Like food tray this basically her head is like the back of her head is like right in front of my face. I can't even move my chair back because.00:05:50JackI'm it doesn't help me because it's not even comfortable even if I put my, even if I recline my chair. So it was just A and that and that was 14 hours of just like every minute was so slow and and it was it was the longest flight I've ever taken in my life. It was horrible. Just a horrible, horrible.00:06:11JackLike every minute was miserable and yeah.00:06:16JackSo I that.00:06:16JackThat's basically the worst flight ever had. It wasn't.00:06:17XochitlYou will be.00:06:19XochitlBasically, and it's been a long flight.00:06:19JackYeah, it wasn't because of like.00:06:23JackYeah, 14 hours of just suffering in this tiny little claustrophobic.00:06:28JackMiddle seat. Yeah, it's just terrible. It's just so it's why when you fly, you have to prepare, you know, for things like when you, when I'm tall, you gotta get those like bring your neck pillow bring all your little stuff that you need to make it comfortable.00:06:47JackAnd I just didn't do any of that. I just was like Ohh, just buy ticket. I'll just fly back home. And of course it was torture because I didn't make it comfortable for myself. So I think both you and I were kind of running away from places and we were just like, so.00:07:06JackKind of hypnotized by like getting home that we didn't care. You know about the actual trip. You know, it's like.00:07:15XochitlYeah, like you didn't think it through all the way. Just Get Me Out of here because the mentality.00:07:16JackJust Get Me Out of here.00:07:22JackYeah, yeah. And that's a fine attitude until you're on the plane. And then you're like, wow.00:07:28XochitlI should have bought this through.00:07:29JackI really messed up. Yeah, yeah.00:07:31XochitlThat's exactly what it's like.00:07:34XochitlYeah. All right, well.00:07:35XochitlShoot us an e-mail using A-Z englishpodcast@gmail.com leave a comment down below on our website at ozenglishpodcast.com and we will see you guys next time. A to Z Dear Jack 19 | "Squished in Seat 23B"

Dear Xochitl and Jack,I recently found myself in an awkward situation on a flight. The passenger next to me seemed to have no qualms about invading my personal space. Not only did they let their arm spill into my seat area, but they also seemed completely oblivious to the discomfort they were causing. How can I address this issue without turning a cramped flight into a confrontation at 30,000 feet?Sincerely,Squished in Seat 23B"Qualms" refers to feelings of doubt, hesitation, or uneasiness, especially when it comes to moral or ethical considerations. If someone has "no qualms" about something, it means they have no reservations or hesitations about doing it, often implying a lack of concern for potential negative consequences or ethical considerations. In the context of your question, if a passenger has "no qualms" about invading personal space, it means they are doing so without any apparent hesitation or consideration for the discomfort it may cause."Invading personal space" refers to encroaching upon the physical or psychological space that individuals consider their own. This space varies between cultures and individuals, but it generally includes an invisible boundary around a person that, when breached, can cause discomfort or unease. Physical invasion of personal space might include standing too close, touching without permission, or, as in your scenario, allowing body parts to spill over into an adjacent seat on an airplane. It's a social norm to respect personal space to ensure the comfort and well-being of those around us. When this space is invaded, it can lead to feelings of discomfort or frustration."Confrontation" refers to a face-to-face meeting or conflict, often characterized by disagreement, argument, or even a hostile encounter. In interpersonal situations, a confrontation occurs when individuals address a problem, disagreement, or issue directly with each other. Confrontations can be assertive and constructive, aiming to resolve conflicts and improve understanding, or they can be confrontational in a negative sense, involving hostility and aggression.Podcast Website:https://atozenglishpodcast.com/a-to-z-dear-jack-19-squished-in-seat-23b/Social Media:WeChat account ID: atozenglishpodcastFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/671098974684413/Tik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22A to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastCheck out our You Tube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master. The A to Z English Podcast | Would you rather get one big gift or several small gifts?

In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Xochitl and Jack discuss this would you rather question: Would you rather get one big gift or several small gifts? Transcript:00:00:00JackYou're listening to the A-Z English podcast.00:00:14JackWelcome to the A-Z English podcast. My name is Jack and today I'm here with my co-host social. And today we are going to do a would you rather question for the holidays and social today's would you rather is, would you rather get one big gift?00:00:32JackOr several small gifts.00:00:40XochitlDang, this is hard. It's kind of vague, right? Like is 1 big gift I think like would rather get one big gift at this point because.00:00:51XochitlI think when you're a kid, it's like quantity over quality and you're just impressed with your gifts and how many you're getting. And like, oh, I got 20 gifts. Oh, well, I got 25. And then as you get older, like, the quality of the gifts are so much more important. So I think getting a high quality gift that was thoughtful or expensive.00:01:13XochitlWould mean a lot more to me than several smaller gifts that I would just take up space in my house. Probably.00:01:22JackYeah, like when when they're in this question, we say big gift. Are we talking about just like size or like big meaning like expensive? And I take it to mean like an expensive gift, you know, versus several small cheaper gifts, but maybe.00:01:40JackIf you add up all the small gifts, it equals the same money as the as the big.00:01:48JackBut for me, like I'm I totally agree with you. When I was a kid, I would want more.00:01:55JackYou know, opportunities to open presents.00:01:58JackYou know.00:01:58XochitlRight. The surprise of it is like the suspense is a big part of it. When they're a kid.00:01:59JackIt's like.00:02:03JackExactly. It's just how many how many presents.00:02:06JackDid you get? I got I.00:02:07JackGot 7 presents. I got 9 presents or whatever. It doesn't matter if they're, you know, terrible.00:02:13JackIt's just like.00:02:14XochitlIt doesn't matter.00:02:15XochitlWell, and kids are just impressed.00:02:17XochitlI wish that I.00:02:18XochitlCould go back to being a kid and and impressed by like a stuffed animal. A slinky.00:02:22XochitlLike a? Yeah, a thing.00:02:24XochitlOf slime and a cheap art supplies kit.00:02:28XochitlI wish like that was like.00:02:29XochitlWow, I love this stuff, you know now.00:02:31XochitlI'm like, OK, that's pretty much just junk. It's just.00:02:35JackAnd where and where am I going to put this?00:02:36JackStuff you know.00:02:37XochitlYeah, exactly.00:02:37JackNow now I'm getting. Thanks for the clutter.00:02:43JackBut like you know, getting like a nice diamond ring or something like that, you know, would be that's something that you can, you know, it's it's something you'd want.00:02:52JackAnd and it's.00:02:53JackTable. Yeah, I you know, I I I agree.00:02:57JackI think just like one really thoughtful gift, one really one big gift is is far superior to a bunch of small gifts. That is just gonna that are just going to end up in a closet somewhere or getting recycled, you know, six months later.00:03:16발표자Right.00:03:18JackYeah, I think we, yeah, I agree.00:03:19발표자OK.00:03:23XochitlWell, what do you prefer? Would you like a several smaller gifts or one big gift? Let us know in the comments at A-Z englishpodcast.com shoot us an e-mail at at ozenglishpodcast@gmail.com and we will see you guys next.00:03:37XochitlTime. The A to Z English Podcast | Unusual Christmas traditions from around the world

Become friends with The A to Z English Podcast on WeChat!Account ID: atozenglishpodcastHere are three unusual Christmas traditions from different parts of the world:Krampusnacht in Austria and Germany:In some Alpine regions, including Austria and Germany, there's a tradition called Krampusnacht (Krampus Night) on December 5th. Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure who, according to folklore, punishes misbehaving children during the Christmas season. On Krampusnacht, people dress up as Krampus and participate in parades, scaring children and adults alike. It's a unique blend of the festive and the eerie.Catalonia's "Caga Tió" Tradition in Spain:In Catalonia, Spain, there's a Christmas tradition involving a character named "Caga Tió," which translates to "pooping log." A hollow log with a smiling face is propped up on sticks and "fed" by children with sweets in the days leading up to Christmas. On Christmas Eve, the log is beaten with sticks while a traditional song is sung, encouraging it to "poop" small gifts and candies. It's a lighthearted and quirky tradition.Japan's KFC Christmas Feast:In Japan, it's a popular tradition to have a Christmas meal from KFC. This unique custom began in the 1970s after a successful marketing campaign by KFC Japan, associating the fast-food chain with Christmas. Many Japanese families pre-order their KFC Christmas meals, complete with special holiday-themed buckets. The tradition has become so ingrained that ordering KFC for Christmas is a widespread practice in Japan. These traditions showcase the diversity of how people celebrate Christmas around the world, with each culture adding its own distinctive touch to the holiday season.Podcast Website:https://atozenglishpodcast.com/the-a-to-z-english-podcast-unusual-christmas-traditions-from-around-the-world/Social Media:Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/671098974684413/Tik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22A to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastCheck out our You Tube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master. I find it challenging to make friends because I am not confident in my English skills. I often worry about making mistakes and being misunderstood. Do you have any advice on how I can improve my language skills and feel more comfortable interacting with native speakers?Sincerely,Feeling Lost in LanguageThe phrase "fake it till you make it" is often used to convey the idea of acting with confidence and assurance, even if you may not feel entirely competent or confident in a given situation. It suggests that by outwardly portraying confidence and competence, you may eventually gain the skills or confidence you initially lacked."Peas and carrots" is a phrase that is often used together to describe things that go well together, much like the two foods in a classic culinary combination. The term has found its way into popular culture, often used to represent harmony or compatibility.Podcast Website:https://atozenglishpodcast.com/a-to-z-dear-jack-18-feeling-lost-in-language/Social Media:Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/671098974684413/Tik Tok:@atozenglish1Instagram:@atozenglish22Twitter:@atozenglish22A to Z Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/theatozenglishpodcastCheck out our You Tube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCds7JR-5dbarBfas4Ve4h8ADonate to the show: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/9472af5c-8580-45e1-b0dd-ff211db08a90/donationsRobin and Jack started a new You Tube channel called English Word Master.
