Jake Adelstein: Tokyo Vice
Today’s guest is author and investigative journalist Jake Adelstein.
Jake has spent most of his professional life in Japan as a reporter. He is considered one of the foremost experts on organized crime in the country. After graduating from Sophia University in Tokyo in 1993, he became the sole non-Japanese journalist at Japan’s largest newspaper. Jake would go on to uncover major stories on the Yakuza, as detailed in his memoir Tokyo Vice which is now a series on HBO Max. He is also the author of Pay the Devil in Bitcoin: The Creation of a Cryptocurrency and How Half a Billion Dollars of It Vanished from Japan and Operation Tropical Storm: How an FBI Jewish-Japanese Special Agent Snared a Yakuza Boss in Hawaii. Andy McNab: Behind Enemy Lines [Rebroadcast]

Andy McNab is a former member of the British SAS who led Bravo Two Zero during the first Gulf War. Over his time in the military, Andy conducted counter-terrorist and anti-drug missions in Central America, South America and throughout the Middle East. He also worked undercover in Northern Ireland. He was captured in Iraq on a mission during the first Gulf War in 1991, an experience he recounts in his first book, Bravo Two Zero. Andy was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) and Military Medal (MM).
At the time he left SAS in 1993, he was the British Army's most highly decorated serving soldier. In his post-military life, Andy has instructed special operations forces in survival, hostage rescue, and counterterrorism. He was also the technical advisor on the classic action film Heat. He is the author of the Nick Stone and Tom Buckingham thriller series, the co-author of the Boy Soldier series, and the author of three books about his own military experience: Bravo Two Zero, Seven Troop, and Immediate Action. Andy’s novel Red Notice was recently adapted into a major motion picture. It is currently available on Netflix as SAS: Rise of the Black Swan.

Chris plays Lieutenant Commander James Reece in the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of Jack Carr’s The Terminal List. Following the show’s debut this summer, it became the No. 1 series on Prime Video. During the week of 4th of July alone, the show was viewed for more than 1.6 billion minutes. In addition to portraying James Reece, Chris is also known for his roles in the Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, and LEGO Movie franchises, along with Moneyball, Zero Dark Thirty, Passengers, The Magnificent Seven, Onward, The Tomorrow War, and many others. He also played Andy Dwyer on the hit sitcom Parks and Recreation.

Remembering James Yeager
Note: This episode of Danger Close originally ran in October 2021.
James Yeager passed away on September 1, 2022. This is a tribute to his life and legacy. As James would always close out his videos: “This is James Yeager for Tactical Response reminding you that your responsibility to be ready for the fight, never ends.” James Yeager was a police officer, private security contractor, and founder and CEO of the firearm and tactical training company Tactical Response. He had been a firearms trainer since 1994 and founded Tactical Response in 1996 on the principle of “Student First – Instructor Second.” Yeager’s law enforcement experience included serving as an undercover drug enforcement officer, SWAT team leader, K-9 handler, and as Chief of the Big Sandy Police Department in Tennessee.
In 2004 and 2005, he worked as a private security contractor in Iraq, responsible for the protection of eight Iraqi Election Commissioners. On April 20, 2005, his PSD was caught in an ambush on Route Irish between the Green Zone and Baghdad International Airport. Three members of his team were killed. James discusses this in detail during the conversation.

Nate Boyer: MVP
Nate Boyer is a Green Beret, former college and professional football player, actor, and director of the new movie MVP. The film is executive produced by Sylvester Stallone. Its official synopsis explains, “[it] takes place on the streets of Hollywood and centers on the growing friendship between a struggling recently retired NFL player and a homeless veteran suffering from PTSD (played by Boyer). The movie reveals the common challenges faced by military veterans and professional athletes adjusting to a new life once the uniform comes off.”
MVP stars athletes and actors including Randy Couture, Michael Strahan, Tom Arnold, Talia Jackson, and others. The film’s release is accompanied by a fundraising campaign for Nate’s nonprofit Merging Vets and Players from the GNC Live Well Foundation. In addition to being a filmmaker, Nate is also a former professional athlete. Even though he had not participated in organized football before joining the Special Forces, he went on to play for the Texas Longhorns before becoming the oldest rookie in NFL history at the age of 34 as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. During his time as a Green Beret, Nate served on deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and completed a number of JCET (Joint Command Exchange Training) Missions to locations including Israel, Bulgaria, and Greece.
