129: Britt Hawthorne - How to Raise Antiracist Kids
Today’s episode features a really important conversation with Britt Hawthorne, who is an anti-racism educator, teacher, speaker, visionary and advocate. We are such huge fans of Britt and her energy is so infectious that we could not wait to dive into this interview and to share it with you. What we love about this conversation with Britt is that she explained things in such a non-judgmental way and she answered the questions that so many of us have. Best of all, she gives us the permission to have these tough conversations with our parenting partners and children, as well as providing language to use and her advice for handling anti-racism when it arises. We’d encourage you to pre-order Britt’s upcoming book, Raising Antiracist Children: A Practical Parenting Guide (which we cannot wait to read!) and watch our Instagram this week as we’ll be sharing more great resources from Britt. If this episode resonates with you and you think it could help someone in your life, we’d love it if you shared it to your Instagram Stories and tag us, @herselfpodcast and @britthawthorne. Motherhood can be hard, and that’s why we like to bring experts on to the podcast to help you, and us, navigate each day as moms. She is an author and one of Instagram’s favorite moms, because she gives us so many tangible tips to help us navigate the “little kids years” and what to do to keep our children happy, thriving, and frankly, entertained.A big takeaway that we got from this conversation is that we must remember to give ourselves credit for making it through the hard days, and for everything that we do as parents! 123. Bring on the Men - Parenting: the Good, the Bad, and Everything in Between
They’re back! Colin and Drew are joining us again this week for another Bring on the Men episode, and this week we’re focusing on all things parenting. Drew may have said it best recently when he said that no one prepares you for these little kid years - and we would have to agree! We want to thank the guys for their vulnerability and openness in sharing what’s behind the curtain of being a dad these days, as they answered some questions that fathers aren’t asked often with some very thoughtful and emotional responses (which makes us love them even more). We hope you enjoyed this special mini-series with Colin and Drew, and that it inspires conversations between you and your own spouses about some of the important topics that we just scratched the surface on these past two episodes. As always, we would be so grateful if you shared the episode, and tag us on Instagram, @herselfpodcast, with your biggest takeaways. 15% off at GOODR with code ‘herself15’: https://goodr.com$20 off first purchase at ROTHY’S: http://rothys.com/herselfLinks & Resources:Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do (and More Life to Live) by Eve RodskyHow Will You Measure Your Life? by Clayton M. 122. Bring on the Men - Partnership: the Good, the Bad and Everything in Between
Today we’re all in for a treat, because we have another Bring on the Men episode! It’s been awhile since Colin and Drew have been on the podcast and a lot has changed since that last time they joined us, including our friendships, as we’re all more comfortable and much more open with each other. In this episode, we look at partnering and how different seasons of partnership exist. We believe that every couple, including the 4 of us, have things to work on, constantly. Every time we bring Colin and Drew on, there's going to be different things to talk about, but the thing we really like about these Bring on the Men episodes is that the 4 of us are always committed to recalibrating and getting back on track. Whatever we are going through, we want to make sure we get back on track, and we want the same for you.We had so many important things to touch on about partnership that we decided to make this a special 2-part series with the guys, and you’re not going to want to miss next week’s show where we’ll be focusing on parenting! 10% off at BETTERHELP: http://betterhelp.com/herself Free shipping on all US orders with code FREESHIPPING in our SHOPLinks & Resources:Marriage Minute (The Gottman Institute) 63. 121: Shame vs Guilt and The Human Experience
Today we’re talking about an important subject and one that can have such a big impact on our lives, especially if we don’t understand it. We’re talking about the shame and the guilt that so many mothers, including ourselves, feel each and every day. As you know, we’re reading Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart with our Patreon Book Club, and in the book she helps define what that human experience is for us, and the book can really help us to start to understand the difference between those two words, shame and guilt. What is so fascinating is that shame and guilt are words that are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference that we need to be aware of. We’ll dive deep into that difference in this episode, as well as share both of our personal experiences with these feelings, along with self-compassion, perfectionism, humiliation, and embarrassment. These feelings don’t only plague motherhood, but other extremely important parts of our lives as well. Shame is part of the human experience, and we really want to bring it into the light so this community can start growing together. We hope that you can learn from us, and maybe give yourself the empathy that you really need much earlier than we have in the past with ourselves. 10% off at BETTERHELP: http://betterhelp.com/herself Links & Resources:Pursuing Her Purpose97. 120: The Body Image Episode
Body image and health is a topic that we knew we had to talk about again on the podcast, because it’s something that we’ve both been on a journey with over the past year. Today we’re opening the conversation on body image back up and diving deeper into what this process has looked like for us. We also thought it would be fun to have our friend Nina join us to share her thoughts. The 3 of us just did a swimsuit try-on together showing them to our Instagram followers, and she has some awesome insights that we wanted to share with you in this episode. Before you listen, we must stress that body image is something that anyone can struggle with, and there is space for women of all shapes and sizes to take part in this discussion. If body image is something that you struggle with hearing about, or you find it to be triggering, give yourself permission to sit this episode out. While we are presenting it in a way that we believe to be safe, we want to add this warning so that you can take care of yourself, as always.
