Intertextuality and Extra-Biblical Sources: An Interview with Pastors Josh Brooker and Mike Donoho

We have occasionally mentioned extra biblical sources on expedition 44 and I always get a slew of emails after I use these words asking what exactly I am referring to.   For the most part the average church attender has no idea that the bible seems to quote other sources several times. In fact I have had people argue this with me tooth and nail at first and are kind of shocked when I give them some understanding of this. Today I have invited a couple of friends to help Matt and I work through some thoughts here.      Follow Mike Donoho: https://www.facebook.com/dixonassembly/  Follow Josh Brooker: https://www.facebook.com/ExperienceCa... https://experiencecc.com  Follow Beards and Bible Podcast:  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast... https://beardsandbible.podbean.com https://open.spotify.com/show/44TmaA1... https://www.facebook.com/Beards-Bible...

Rethinking Heaven: Part 2- The Rapture?

The rapture thinking isn’t Biblical. Not only did Paul not think this way but neither did Jesus, in fact none of the Biblical Authors thought this way.     It started with an Anglo-Irish theologian, who in the 1830s invented the concept. Before John Nelson Darby imagined this scenario in the clouds, no Christian had ever heard of the rapture. the word "rapture"and even the idea of it simply  doesn't appear anywhere in the Bible.   The “rapture” is simply not part of the biblical picture. And, it often leads to problems today like a desire for escapism, and sometimes a lack of concern for this planet

Rethinking Heaven: Part 1- What is Heaven?

• When a Christian dies, he or she enters into what theologians call the intermediate state, a transitional period between our past lives on Earth and our future resurrection to life on the New Earth. Usually when we refer to “Heaven,” we mean the place that Christians go when they die. (paradise) • By definition, an intermediate state or location is temporary. Life in the Heaven we go to when we die . . . is not our final destination. It may be a less conscious state. It’s not the place God promises to refashion for us to live in forever. • God’s children are destined for life as resurrected beings on a resurrected Earth.

The Gospel: Part 2- What is the Gospel?

Pastor Matt and Dr. Ryan answer the question what is the gospel. Some look at Salvation alone as the gospel, but we will show that Salvation itself is simply described throughout the Bible as a journey of being faithful and obedient (Allegiant); giving our life (Nephesh) as Jesus gave his. A king, a kingdom, freedom from slavery, and restoration of an Edenic plan for all people the  NT and OT would affirm that the Gospel is is the journey of obedience to a complete vocational calling as a lightbearer. It is essentially Man’s free will choosing to pledge his complete heart and life to following King Jesus. Can it also be considered as a singular experience? Watch the video to help formulate your view.

The Gospel: Part 1- The Romans Road?

Our Westernized (American church) thinking, heavily influenced by Reformational theology has left most of us confused about what the Gospel (good News) is and how Salvation and Sanctification work in the life of a Believer. We have sought to use ways to communicate God's plan of Salvation and the start of the journey of following Jesus by simple steps or something called the Romans Road. Unfortunately both models have likely caused more problems than Good. Today in part 1 we simply take a look at some of the issues that have arisen through simple Salvation thinking and why they don't really make sense in the lens of scripture.       •       idolatry (allegiance to other spiritual beings) and sin has separated us from our original calling and communion with God  • We  need reconciliation and that was made in Jesus’ sacrifice • We need to respond in faith (allegiance- not just belief or a one-time confession- nephesh, everything we are) • Romans road is problematic in that it rips these verses out of context and it doesn’t fit the thesis of Romans 1:16-17.  • it prioritized “getting saved” and “going to heaven” over our calling to participate in God’s glory • Romans is about reconciliation and the one people of God returning to their original calling through faith(fulness). This was made possible in Jesus’ faithfulness that fulfilled the covenant to Abraham (to bless the nations) in the way Israel could not under the Law.
