346: Freestyle Friday | My $100,000 Decision
In this episode of Freestyle Friday, with your host Travis Chappell talks about what led him to his decision to spend $100,000 on one thing.
Episode Highlights:
Travis recently spent $100,000 on one thing, but it wasn’t on “stuff.”
He spent the money on entrance into a Mastermind.
He has spent about $170,000 on self-improvement for his business over the last couple of years.
Travis asked himself what the alternative would have been had he not joined this Mastermind, and he couldn’t come up with any less expensive alternative.
Because analysts predict another recession soon, Travis knows he’ll have to lean on his relationships.
Value time over money.
It will always take you longer to do something by yourself than it will if you find the right people to build relationships.
Once he had his son, Travis realized it was the right time to take a big risk to make his dreams come true so he knows his son will never see him regret it.
3 Key Points:
Ask yourself what the alternative would be if you didn’t take a risk you’re considering taking.
Always value your time over your money.
You should be willing to risk it all and put it all on the line for your goals and dreams.
Tweetable Quotes:
“People value money way too much. It’s amazing to me when I talk to people who have these big, grandiose dreams and goals for themselves and they don’t want to buy a $300 course because it’s too much money.” –Travis Chappell
“You can always make money back. You can never make time back.” –Travis Chappell

345: Topic | Unique Ways to Expand Your Network with Jeff Brown, Rob Sperry, and Francesca Moi
Jeff Brown, a podcaster and broadcasting professional; Rob Sperry, a network marketing educator; and Francesca Moi, the “queen of meetups” share with your host, Travis Chappell, their thoughts on unique ways to expand your network.
Episode Highlights:
Jeff Brown
Launching his podcast was the smartest decision he ever made because it was while he was laid off from his last radio broadcasting job.
Podcasting gave him global reach in a way radio broadcasting did not.
He entered the podcasting space in 2012, before it was popular the way it is now.
Podcasting was a good fit because of his radio background and because he loves how intimate the medium is.
The fastest and most obvious way to monetize podcasting is through advertising.
He’s able to make his living entirely from podcasting by mentoring other podcasters and turning it into a coaching business.
With a podcast, you’re able to get in front of people for half an hour when they likely wouldn’t give you half an hour of their time if you asked them directly; they see it as using their time in a productive way and gives you a foundation to a relationship with that person.
Rob Sperry
Some people are givers and some people are “matchers,” who are always seeking to get something back in return for what they give.
Being an “ambitious giver” starts with gaining a broader perspective and looking at it like a bank account—if you make regular “deposits” of good will and fewer “withdrawals,” eventually you’ll be able to make a much bigger withdrawal later.
Build your proverbial ark before the storm comes.
Making a financial investment in something is a motivation to make a greater commitment to that thing.
Francesca Moi
Francesca started a meetup group in all the major cities in Australia and in four months it grew to 12,000 members.
People want a magic solution to getting an audience for their speaking engagements, for example, but the answer is simply to “shut up and build your network.”
If you start a meetup, focus it around networking and invite an expert to speak to the group to add value.
To monetize meetups, which aren’t inherently revenue-driven, Francesca built trust through her online presence and eventually turned that into a coaching business.
She gained momentum for her meetups by announcing it to the current meetup participants in advance, so that by the time it’s announced publicly, there are already attendees.
3 Key Points:
Podcasting itself can be leveraged as an unexpected networking tool.
Your best insurance policy is your network.
You have to get to know your clients in order to effectively market to them and add value to their experience.
Tweetable Quotes:
“I don’t know that there is a more intimate form our content can take than when we create audio content. And I think when leveraged well, it’s one of the fastest ways to build an audience and one of the fastest ways to build trust with that audience.” –Jeff Brown
“I was always taught, go find someone who has what you want and listen to them and do what they tell you to do.” –Rob Sperry
“The amount of people that come to me and say I don’t know what my clients want from me, and I say that’s because you haven’t been in front of them, you haven’t hung out with them, you haven’t had a dinner with your clients. Plan a dinner and ask them questions.” –Francesca Moi

344: Aaron Hale | Blind AND Deaf?? How to Push Through Obstacles
Aaron Hale is a chef and 14-year military veteran who became blind after surviving an explosion in Afghanistan and became deaf a few years later. He founded a chocolate business, E.O.D., with his wife McKayla Hale. In this episode of Build Your Network, you will find out how Aaron overcame the odds and created a successful business and expanded his network beyond just selling baked goods to family and friends.
Episode Highlights:
Aaron grew up in a fairly artistic family, and his form of artistry was cooking.
He joined the military after getting a Business degree because he didn’t have any clear direction and it was the most logical next step for him.
His first duty post was in Italy for four years, and in his off-duty hours he really immersed himself in the culture and cuisine.
By 2004, the Army needed additional people from the Navy and other branches to volunteer, and Aaron enlisted as part of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team.
In doing an IED check while on duty in Afghanistan, a secondary device detonated and damaged his eyes beyond repair, entirely blinding him.
His military training is what enabled him to maintain a healthy mindset and kept him from falling down a hole of despair.
Aaron decided to use the skills he learned in rehabilitation to occupy his mind and stay fit by mountain climbing and running marathons.
Right before he was set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Aaron contracted bacterial meningitis through the cracks in his skull he sustained from the IED explosion, and the infection rendered him completely deaf.
Aaron describes the six months he spent completely blind and deaf, before getting his cochlear implants, as incredibly lonely.
He decided to make the most of the time by throwing a massive Thanksgiving feast, so he started baking and it became his therapy.
From that point, people kept asking him if he could bake for them and started to pay him for it, so it grew into his business named E.O.D., or Extraordinary Delights.
Aaron learned from the Stockdale Paradox, which says that a firm grasp on reality is more effective in surviving trauma than blind hope is; Aaron had to accept that he may never hear again and that the cochlear implants might not work in order to get through the experience, rather than putting all his energy into hoping they would.
There was more blast damage to his inner ear than a cochlear implant could compensate for, so now everything he hears sounds fully digital because all the sound is coming from the implant’s magnet signal.
Aaron used his speaking engagements and climbing adventures to grow his network beyond just selling baked goods to family and friends.
Aaron sees who you know and what you know as a yin and yang, as a symbiotic relationship.
Aaron sees running his business and becoming a parent as the next challenges for him and as the things that are fulfilling his purpose.
The Random Round
3 Key Points:
A healthy mindset is what can carry you through any difficult situation.
You can find your purpose and direction through continually challenging yourself.
Adding value to others’ lives and taking away their pain can diminish your own pain, and that is what running his business has done for Aaron.
Tweetable Quotes:
“I was finding success through challenging myself. It wasn’t despite struggle, it was because of the struggle. I was growing stronger, more confident, I was growing my network, I was making more friends, and I was adding value to other people’s lives.” –Aaron Hale
“Our pain actually diminishes when we take on others’ pain.” –Aaron Hale

341: Freestyle Friday | How to Talk to High Level People
In this episode of Freestyle Friday, your host Travis Chappell shares tips for making the most of a first impression and how to carry that through to build a real relationship.
Episode Highlights:
Once you meet a high-level person, you need to make use of that connection and capitalize on the good impression you made.
Travis shares how he learned from leaving a bad first impression with a high performer millionaire in his industry.
Talk across to people, not up to them.
Respect people’s time.
Don’t ask the first questions that occur to you.
Look for ways to add value for the other person.
3 Key Points:
Talk across to people, because talking up to them will subconsciously position you as being at a lower level.
You won’t create a relationship with someone after one meeting.
All of these tips are ways to make sure you are respecting people’s time, which will make you more memorable.
Tweetable Quotes:
“If it’s the first through fifth question that came up into your head, it’s probably something that somebody has asked them in the last 24 hours. So maybe just do a little bit of digging, a little bit of research.” –Travis Chappell

339: Rod Khleif | How to Bounce Back from Losing $50 million
Rod Khleif is a multiple business owner and philanthropist who has owned over 2,000 apartment buildings. He has experienced his net worth dropping from $50 million to zero and then rebuilding. Rod shares
Episode Highlights:
Rod’s family immigrated from Holland when he was 6 years old and they didn’t have much money.
Rod learned that most of your success comes back to mindset.
Build relationships with people who think that what you do is easy when you think it’s hard so you can glean tips from them.
If you’re willing to do what other people won’t do, you’ll find success because you’ll be getting results no one else is.
Find a moment where you’re energized, awake, and well-hydrated to sit down and write every goal, from the practical to the seemingly insane, that you want to achieve in your lifetime, and who you want to help.
Set a timeline for each of those goals, or else it isn’t a goal, and then identify your top goals and write a paragraph about why that goal is absolutely essential and non-negotiable.
Also identify the pain points and consequences of not achieving those goals, because we will do more to avoid pain than we will to achieve pleasure.
The most successful and happiest people start giving back as soon as possible and shift the focus away from their own egos.
To build a brand, you have to add value to people’s lives.
By giving away content for free, you learn what resonates with people and therefore what to monetize.
Who you know allows you to free up brain space because you don’t have to learn and know everything when you have people you can ask and use as resources.
The Random Round: a quick series of random questions to get to know Rod.
3 Key Points:
Never achieve a big goal without having more goals lined up for the future.
Success is defined by giving back once you achieve.
The biggest non-negotiable skills for success are sales, marketing, and curiosity.
Tweetable Quotes:
“There are people that think that what you think is hard is so freaking easy.” –Rod Khleif
“As human beings, we will overestimate what we can do in a year, and massively underestimate what we can do in ten years.” –Rod Khleif

Episode Highlights:
Family is everything.
Consistency is the thing that leads to success.
There are no excuses or exceptions to putting in the work.
No matter your connections and privileges, you should still face consequences.

Family is the most important thing, and your actions should reflect this.
Being consistent with your routines and attaching it to what you love and care about will lead to greater respect and success.
You can learn a lot just through observing others’ behavior.

337: Topic | Mindset Shift with David Meltzer, Trent Shelton, and Tim Storey
David Meltzer, author of Connected to Goodness; Trent Shelton, author of The Greatest You; and life coach Tim Storey share with your host, Travis Chappell, their thoughts on "who you know" and "what you know."
Episode Highlights:
David Meltzer
If you’re doing something you don’t enjoy, you can still derive purpose out of it in order to cultivate passion for it.
If you don’t understand what’s going on, try to understand it and put faith into what you want out of the situation.
Trent Shelton
Once he realized that motivational speaking was his passion, he reached out to coaches to improve his skills and dove right into video creation.
Being consistent results in people trusting you and results in shareability of your content.
Consistency also means you will inevitably grow and get better at what you do.
Tim Storey
Don’t focus so much on making choices and decisions that you close yourself off from discovery.
People often know they’re going to be successful, but the question is how you will get there and where you’ll end up, which is where discovery comes in.
Some confidence is innate, but the other factors are environmental.
3 Key Points:
Learning what you want and finding your passion and purpose will inspire others, who will do the same and inspire more people, creating a chain of impact.
Consistency is the most necessary ingredient in whatever you do.
Confidence is both innate and cultivated by your environment.
Tweetable Quotes:
“It’s what we infuse light into. It’s how we find the light. In fact, if you hate somebody or you disagree with someone, the easiest thing to do is find a light, find something you do like about them, look for the positive side.” –David Meltzer
“Consistency means reliable, and when you’re reliable you become trustworthy.” –Trent Shelton
“Even if it’s not innate, if you’re shy, if you’re the kid that was bullied, get you around the right environment and we’re gonna get the right results.” –Tim Storey

336: Sam Bakhtiar | How to Build a Nine Figure Fitness Empire From Scratch
Sam Bakhtiar is the founder of Fitness Concepts, now a multi-million dollar business. He is also a competitive bodybuilder and car enthusiast. Sam shares how he has rebounded from failure, how he commits to his fitness and success, and the importance of persuasion.
Episode Highlights:
You don’t get any off hours when you’re an entrepreneur, but you’re the one in charge and calling the shots.
You need to hire someone to hold you accountable and push you when you’re an entrepreneur because you don’t have a boss to do that.
It took Sam 10 years to make his first $1 million, and then only 6 months to earn his second million.
Early in his business, he actually faced foreclosure and bankruptcy in the face of the 2008 financial crisis.
Sam has had to master the skill of delaying gratification.
Money is like bodybuilding, in that you can lose gains just as quickly as you make them.
His main avenue for investing is real estate, particularly flipping apartments.
Sam believes who you know is more important than what you know.
Seeking out new people is uncomfortable, and it’s easier to stay behind your computer and do things yourself, so you have to make it a priority.
Sam gives everybody a chance, but he doesn’t give unlimited chances, which allows the most impactful people in his circle to stick around.
Commitment is freedom and discipline is happiness.
Humans are programmed to be negative, so we have to rewire ourselves to be positive in a more automatic, habitual way.
All entrepreneurs need to build their skills in copywriting, persuasion, and marketing.
Random Round: a quick series of random questions to get to know Sam.
3 Key Points:
Giving up something now for something greater later is a skill and a muscle that needs to be developed.
If you treat people transactionally, you’ll get transactional results.
Persuasion is not a negative thing, it’s necessary for business success.
Tweetable Quotes:
“What’s the best thing that can happen and what’s the worst thing that can happen? If you can live with the worst thing that can happen, then you should go for it.” –Sam Bakhtiar
“If something makes your heart happy, as long as you’re not being a dumb investor, you’re not doing dumb things with your money, there’s nothing wrong with that. At the end of the day you have to be happy.” –Sam Bakhtiar
