TMHS 123: How To Discover Your Purpose And LIVE IT!

Today we are dealing with a major deficiency in our culture. Sure we’re dealing with an epidemic of nutritional deficiencies… but there is an even bigger deficiency I’m talking about. It’s a deficiency in knowing our purpose. Statistically, people who know who they are and live with a sense of purpose outlive everyone else in the population. Not only that, they experience far fewer chronic illnesses, far less memory loss, and more happiness in life overall. It kind of makes sense when you think about it. Your mind and body really work on a “use it or lose it basis”. And if you are not inspired to use your body and mental faculties each day, why on earth would they be compelled to stick around? Your purpose is literally tied to your lifeline. And today is the day to get fully connected with who you are, why you’re here, and what you’re all about. Today’s show is loaded with insights to help you reveal what Paulo Coelho would call your own “personal legend”. There’s actually a formula for uncovering your life’s purpose. It’s incredibly simple, but it’s only applicable if you’re ready for it. So, if you’re ready, click play, listen with your heart, and take action on the exercises. Let’s go! In this episode you'll discover: Why you actually get to choose what your brain is made of. How a sense of purpose impacts aging and development. How purpose means different things to different people. Why having lots of choices can become debilitating. What the formula for finding your purpose is. Why failure can be a huge launching pad to uncovering your purpose. What important questions to ask yourself in order to flesh out your purpose. How passion really ties into finding your purpose (and it’s not what you think!) Why making a decision to live your purpose is often the hardest thing to do. What the word decision really means and how to build your decision-making muscles. Important caveats about living your purpose that involves other people (you won’t be happy without this!) Why it’s CRITICAL to understand your own personal nature. TMHS 122: Why Your Environment Shapes Your Body And How To Move Your DNA - With Guest Katy Bowman

This conversation with biomechanist and award-winning writer Katy Bowman instantly changed my life. Because I’m a very analytical person, sometimes I like to know the WHY before I jump head over heels into something. Katy broke down exactly why movement matters so much, and how myself and many others are fooling ourselves when it comes to living an active lifestyle. Even though I’ve been exercising for many years, and I even appeared to be fit on the outside, I was actually in the growing number of people who are classified as “actively sedentary”. This was a serious gut check for me. According to the research, even though exercise is awesome and incredibly good for us, it’s not tapping into our best genetic expression by a long shot. You see, even if you work out for an hour a day, you are still only four percent more active than someone who doesn’t exercise at all! That four percent absolutely makes a difference, but when it boils down to it, one hour of activity doesn’t hold a candle to what we do the other 23 hours of the day. I’ve made many strides over the years to combat this disparagement. Standing desk, periodic breaks for mobility work, and even the occasional walk in the middle of the work day. I knew these things made me feel better, but I also knew I would forgo them on a consistent basis because I was trying to get my work done first. After listening to this episode again, I immediately took a nice walk. But this walk was different from any walk I’ve ever been on. I was paying attention to things I had never noticed before. I had a real awareness of how valuable that walk was, and the small things I was doing during it that made the experience for my body even better. What you’re about to learn from Katy today will likely change your life in an empowering way forever. These insights and tips will help you to realize some of the problems that have been hiding in plain sight, and give you the tools to break through them once and for all! In this episode you'll discover: Why consume conventional animal foods can create inflammation. What a biomechanics are and how they impact your life. Why exercise and movement are not really the same thing. How your environment shapes your body. What nutritious movement is. Why walking is equivalent to a macronutrient. How your body actually adapts to things you put on your body (it’s shocking how much shoes can change you!) Why just like “junk food” there is also “junk moving”. What it means to be actively sedentary. What cellular loads are (this is important!) How killer whales in captivity can demonstrate the way our environment dictates our cellular expression. How underwear can inhibit the natural function of your organs and tissues. Why constantly self-regulating the temperature in your environment can prevent important muscles from developing. What you can do to move your DNA and add more nutritious movement to your day. TMHS 121: Changing Our Relationship With Food, Overcoming Bulimia, And Recipes That Will Change Your Life - With George Bryant

Food matters. Eating food is one of the most intimate things that we’ll ever experience in life. You are literally taking something from outside of yourself and deciding (consciously or unconsciously) to make it a part of you. If we’re asleep to the real power of food, we won’t realize that every-single-thing we eat is changing every-single-cell in our bodies. Your genes, your DNA, your upwards of 100 trillion cells, are all in action to convert that chosen food into more you. Now, here’s the real kicker of the situation… You get to CHOOSE what you’re made out of. You can make yourself out of the most vitalizing, storied, health-giving foods in the world - or you can make yourself out of Honey Buns, Fruit Loops, Cheetos, and Skittles. Grass-fed steak, bananas, or bagels… the choice is always up to you. Now, that can be incredibly empowering, or incredibly scary depending on where your mindset is at. Navigating this world of food today takes a special kind of awareness and heart. That's why we brought on our special guest today, because he’s all heart, he developed awareness through experience, and he can make you a meal that will bring tears to your eyes (like that single tear rolling down your cheek seen only in a movie scene). Our guest today is New York Times bestselling author George Bryant (also known as the man behind Civilized Caveman Cooking). Today is going to be a real treat because the Civilized Caveman himself is here to share his story and his secrets with you. We’re going to talk about our crucial relationship with food, overcoming eating disorders, deeply impacting the lives of others, recipes that will change your life, plus a whole lot more. In this episode you'll discover: How you can be a master in the kitchen in a lot less time than you think. Why a “degree” is not the solution to helping people. Why the food you make yourself and your family matters more than anything. What a triggering event means in relationship to eating disorders. What some of the symptoms of bulimia really are. How George was able to finally overcome bulimia (this is a powerful story!) Why authenticity, congruency, and vulnerability are essential to long-term success. How to make S.M.A.R.T. commitments to yourself and others. Why it’s important to speak up in order to gain support in our lives. How our relationship with food shapes our life. Why an obsession with eating healthy can also be problematic. How our perception of food creates our experience of eating. What some of the Civilized Caveman’s favorite recipes are (you don’t want to miss this!) It’s a big mistake to believe that exercise is all about looking good. TMHS 118: Scary Dairy - The Pros And Cons Of Consuming Dairy Products

For a lot of us, nothing says love like some delicious milk and cookies. Or maybe it’s ice cream that you just can’t do without? Or hard cheeses? Or yogurt? Or maybe you get really sexy and dip your food into fondue? Whatever it may be that pulls on those heart strings for you, one thing is for certain: Dairy has a huge emotional connection with people in our world today. This, my health seeking friend, is at the very center of the situation… When it comes to dairy, a lot of people may be aware of the ill effects, but if you try to take it away they’ll cling on to that Ben & Jerry’s container like it’s the bonafide love of their life. They’ll say, “I’ll follow your fancy nutrition advice Mr. Health Guy, but I’m not giving up my dairy!” First of all, I’m not the guy that’s interested in taking things away from people. But if it’s causing you health problems like diabetes, high body fat, and allergies (you’re about to learn about all of that stuff in a minute) then maybe you might want to leave it alone for a while. As I step back so that I don’t get stabbed with an ice cream scooper… I’m here to share why, in fact, dairy is so addictive and at the same time so harmful for most people. Today we’re going to breakdown some long-believed myths about dairy in a way that’s going to blow your mind (and possibly stop you from blowing up bathrooms if you are lactose intolerant). In all seriousness, what you’re about to learn today will be life-changing for you and the people you care about. It’s not that dairy is inherently “bad”, it’s just the way that it’s being produced and consumed today that can cause good people a lot of problems. Enjoy the powerhouse content, but also stay tuned until the end to hear what alternatives to go with (dairy and dairy-free) that actually taste amazing. This is your body and your health, so take action to make it as great as possible! In this episode you'll discover: What enzymes are and what happens to them when they’re cooked. The shocking number of illnesses that pasteurized dairy has been associated with. What milk actually is (this is important!) How important colostrum is to human health. When humans first began domesticating animals for milk. Why the milk our ancestors consumed is not remotely close to the milk we consume today. What pasteurization is and how it was invented. Why homogenization is used in commercial milk. How selective breeding dramatically changed the quality of conventional dairy products. The difference between A1 cows and A2 cows (critical to know!) Which animals are typically utilized for milk around the world (this will surprise you!) How neurological illnesses like schizophrenia are heavily linked to a certain type of dairy. Why food is not really just food. Why the dangers of dairy from sick animals can potentially be worse than the meat from sick animals. How many people lose the ability to digest milk sugar as we age. Why cheese is highly addictive (scientifically proven!) How recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) impacts the health of cows. How a bovine cancer epidemic lead to a huge recall on beef. What abnormal foods and drugs are given to conventional dairy cows. The shocking way that cow’s milk impacts type 1 diabetes. How molecular mimicry and autoimmune conditions can be caused by dairy. Why calcium and dairy do NOT necessarily create strong bones. Why raw milk might be better for those with asthma and allergies. How consumption of milk can lead to accelerated weight gain. Why dairy is actually a higher carbohydrate food. What smart alternatives you can utilize instead of conventional dairy foods. TMHS 117: Feeding Your Family With A Busy Lifestyle And Why You Need To Put Yourself First - With Anne Stevenson

“Most people who meet my wife quickly conclude that she is remarkable. They are right about this. She is smart, funny and thoroughly charming. Often, after hearing her speak at some function or working with her on a project, people will approach me and say something to the effect of, you know, I think the world of you, but your wife, wow!” These words from President Barack Obama couldn't describe my experience any more perfectly. I've had the honor of helping to uplift and empower countless people, but when anyone gets a chance to meet my wife, they realize where all of the really good stuff is coming from. This woman is phenomenal. She's literally a breath of fresh air whenever you walk into a room that she's in. She's gorgeous, silly, loving and beyond intelligent. I seriously think I get smarter just by some weird osmosis from being around her. Now, let's be clear. She will tell you that she didn't get this way overnight. Sure many of these qualities were innately within her, but it was through self-work, introspection, making mistakes, and self-care that she was able to become the woman she is today. The self-work came from hitting the floor in so many situations in her life that she had to choose to raise her standards or stay glued firmly to the ground. The introspection was the hard work to look within and to see where her fears were at play, and the excuses that she had leaned on to justify not reaching her potential. Making mistakes came naturally as you employ the trial and success method to figure out what works for you as a unique individual with unique circumstances. The self-care is what enabled her to feel good, strong, beautiful, and capable of gracefully handling all of challenges that life throws your way. And all of this is a small piece of her story, but today you're going to learn far more and be able to glean some life-changing insights from her example. There is a balancing force within the universe that resides within all women. When a woman feels beautiful, appreciated, and strong within herself, unbounded miracles begin to happen around her. Diane Mariechild said, “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.” As men, we have to help create the conditions for the women in our lives to thrive. Because truly, nothing can give us more strength than the support of a woman who owns her real power. There are a lot of valuable insights here for all women and all men, all mom and all dads, and all people who want to do something exceptional in their lives. On top of that, we're sharing some tips our family uses to eat healthy with all of the busy stuff going on, so this episode is jam-packed with goodness. In this episode you'll discover: How the American fast food culture can be an addictive shock for foreigners. Why destiny can sometimes be found within the loving arms of a gym. How a cancer scare became a catalyst for change in our family's lives. What your body's "innate intelligence" has to do with healing. What triggered the shift in my career from working in a gym to helping people with chronic illnesses. Why doubt can sabotage the results in your healing. The weird reason that Anne makes the bed each morning (it works though!). What my wife's morning routine looks like. How Anne is able to switch gears between family, wife, and work roles so efficiently. What strategies Anne uses to feed the family healthy food with a busy lifestyle. What "back up plans" we have to eat the best food possible in a pinch.
