Brad Kearns: How To Ensure You Consume Enough Protein
Today, dietary experts agree on one thing—that protein is the #1 dietary priority to survive (and thrive). Yes, humans need carbs to fuel an energetic life and natural, nutritious fats for hormone and cellular health, but protein is the #1 dietary priority—and this episode will explain why. You will learn exactly why we need sufficient dietary protein and why many people fall short of this goal, why restrictive diets (like fasting, keto, or being plant-based) put you at an automatic disadvantage, why getting enough protein can be a challenge and how to overcome that challenge, and the differences in bioavailability for different proteins—such as beans and rice vs. steak, hamburger, eggs, and the #1 supplement whey (which is vastly superior to unhealthy plant proteins). We also talk about the 9 essential (and 11 non-essential) amino acids and the reason why the essential ones must come from your diet. You will learn about the “Leucine threshold” to trigger muscle protein synthesis, the optimal times to consume protein and how much to eat, and why protein is an integral part of achieving long-term weight loss. I also explain what crash diets that feature low amounts of protein do to your body and metabolism and why the goal is to be in an anabolic or metabolic state, and not a catabolic state. As you will hear, the most important thing is to simply try to raise awareness of where you fall in terms of protein intake, and then prioritize! This dietary strategy will keep you away from indulgent foods and lower nutrient density foods. For a quick, easy protein boost, get a bag of B.rad Whey + Creatine Superfuel on Amazon or BradNutrition.com and stir into a glass of water. TIMESTAMPS: Protein in the dietary centerpiece. We don’t need to meet our target perfectly every day as long as we make it up. [01:00] Many people are believed to be falling short these days on optimal protein consumption because of the popularity of so-called restrictive diets. [03:00] It is difficult to optimize protein because there are not a lot of quick on-the-go snack foods that are high in protein. [05:00] We have to be concerned about the amino acids and getting leucine. [07:00] Sarcopenia is the age-related muscle loss from lack of protein. [11:00] Eating whey is a good way to supplement your need for protein. [12:00] What is the recommendation for sufficient protein intake? Consume one gram per pound of your ideal body weight. [17:00] What is the protein content of an egg? There are 6 grams of protein in the whites whereas the yolk is rich with fat and other nutrients that are difficult to get from other areas of the diet. [22:00] If you are habitually under consuming protein, you will soon develop a disease. B.rad Highlights #2: Personality Tendencies, Focus, Motivation, Decisions & Actions, & Rewiring The Brain
Welcome to the second of a multi-part series where I cover brief and not-so-brief highlights from many of my favorite podcast guests! Learn about Gretchen Rubin’s 4 Tendencies (Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, and Rebel), hear a major life lesson from my 107-year-old barber, and another one from Seth Godin, who reminds us to “turn that s*it off!” when faced with distraction. You’ll hear from Ray Sidney, Google’s fifth-ever employee, on the importance of pure motivation, why Mark Manson says “self-worth is an illusion”, and that our purpose in life is to “create a string of hope narratives.” I share key advice from John Assaraf on how to rewire your brain for success, as well as important words from Dr. Ron Sinha, who warns us of the dangers of rumination and consumerism—the “hedonic treadmill.” You will also hear from Dr. Robert Lustig, who describes the “hacking of the American Mind” with corporate-driven instant gratification dopamine hits, Dr. Judson Brandeis on sexual health, and learn how to improve your eyesight with Jake Steiner. Finally, William Shewfelt offers a powerful perspective on having a resilient success mindset and Jeff Kahn explains the sleep bank account. TIMESTAMPS: In her book, Gretchen Rubin categorizes four main categories that people fall into with their behavior patterns. They are the upholder, the questioner, the obliger, and the rebel. [00:49] Here's what the research shows. The population, 41% of the population are obligers. 24% are questioners, 19% are upholders, and 17% are rebels. [12:55] The world’s oldest barber, at 107, gave Brad a haircut and inspired Brad’s longevity aspirations. [13:40] Seth Godin talked about persevering especially in athletics. [17:24] You must motivate yourself for the right reasons. [19:50] Mark Manson says that self-worth is an illusion, and it's actually a form of persistent low-level narcissism. You can learn to merge your thinking brain with your feeling brain. [23:11] The brain-training expert, John Assaraf, talked about the obstacles to rewiring our brain. You need to take baby steps. [30:31] If you are on the treadmill of the rat race of trying to achieve more and more, you are sacrificing your health and mental well-being. [33:57] When you ruminate about the past, that generally promotes depression and ruminating about the future, generally promotes anxiety. [37:08] Dr. Brandeis contends that 95% of erectile dysfunction problems are psychological. There is nothing wrong with the plumbing. [40:51] Jake Steiner is an expert on vision is challenging some of the foundational premises of using corrective eyewear. [42:47] William Shewfelt talks about having a plan, locking in that mindset and just never giving up. [44:26] Jeff Kahn, sleep expert suggests that you treat your sleep like a bank account. When you experience a deficit for whatever reason, strive to make that up. [48:48] In the last 40 years, government legislation and subsidies have promoted an ever- available temptation combined with constant stress, with the end result of an unprecedented epidemic of addiction, anxiety, depression, and chronic disease. B.rad Highlights #1: Mindset, Parenting, Self-Sabotage, Manifesting, Tech Addiction
Welcome to the first of a multi-part series where I cover brief and not-so-brief highlights from many of my favorite podcast guests, starting with Dave Rossi, who offers an invaluable perspective on redirecting your thoughts and actions when you experience stress, as well as some parenting tips. You’ll hear some more parenting tips from Ashley Merryman, like the importance of emphasizing and praising effort made toward improvement, and truly fantastic advice from Thais Gibson to help you overcome self-sabotage. I’ve also included some of my favorite clips of Dr. John DeMartini talking about following your inspired purpose and from Dain Heer on formulating a healthy perspective. You will also learn how thoughts manifest cellular function from Bruce Lipton and how to overcome dopamine addiction with Dr. Anna Lembke. Finally, Luke Storey teaches us about manifestation and Don Goewey discusses self-awareness. Some of these personal growth insights are quite short and some are more lengthy, but what they all have in common is their wisdom and ability to stay with you and help you improve your life. TIMESTAMPS: As Brad shares some of his favorite excerpts from some of his many podcasts. He firsts asks “Should I be doing this right now?” (Dave Rossi) [01:57] About parenting, Rossi says, “When talking to the kids, have good eye contact and constant affirmations of love and support.” [03:15] It is not necessary to praise the child for athletic ability, beauty, or smarts, it can sometimes be detrimental to their self-esteem. [08:05] Be honest with your feedback. Praise the effort toward improvement. [11:36] Thais Gibson used Brad as a subject by which she could describe her work as a personal growth expert. When there is a conflict between your goals and behaviors, that is the definition of self-sabotage [14:12] Manifestation usually does not work because our mindset cuts us off from the potential power that it might have. {20:52] Don Goewey describes a four-step process to become more self-aware and well-adjusted. [24:39] What do you do spontaneously every day that requires no motivation and brings you joy and fulfillment and makes a positive contribution to the world? [27:16] If you don't empower your life, other people will overpower you. [33:54] When you get frustrated, ask yourself a question. Who does this belong to? [34:45] Bruce Lipton believes that our thoughts affect the cellular function in our bodies at all times. The messages we get in the first seven years of life continue on into our adult subconscious. [40:20] When you change your thoughts, you can change your energy level and interest in your situation. [47:37] There are three ways to reprogram your subconscious and change your life. [49:11] The powerful pull of hyperconnectivity has landed just about everyone in the category of addiction. [52:54] The routine things you do in daily life can take on epic proportions, but it doesn't mean you have to get to the top of the mountain. Brad Kearns: Insights On Testosterone, Libido, And Sexual Function
Rebroadcast: Don’t let the title of this show make you think this episode is mainly for male listeners: you will learn a lot about sexual function and libido that is relevant for women as well. I’ve really been diving deep into research as I work on writing my new book about testosterone function and delaying the aging process, and I have already discovered so many compelling insights that I’ll be sharing some of them with you today. You will learn what it is about visceral fat that makes it so harmful to the body, and also why it becomes a slippery slope that is hard to escape once you add a little bit of this kind of fat to your body. Did you know belly fat is actually classified as an endocrine organ of its own because of the inflammatory chemicals it secretes? This also puts your system in a constant state of inflammation, which inhibits testosterone production and a whole host of other issues relating to metabolic health. And, this all leads to even more belly fat accumulation! And when you have too much belly fat, any testosterone your body is making (or receiving through supplementation) will actually be converted into estrogen. You’ll also learn about the connection between working out too much and libido levels and the importance of napping. Training yourself to unplug and actually shut your brain down is such an important practice to commit to making daily. Remember the goal is not to fall asleep but to rest and check out. If you have trouble falling asleep or feeling really rested, use a blindfold to help your body relax, and your mind will follow. I also share the Taoist theory that posits that (for males) orgasms deplete your essential life force and the importance of preserving them. The idea is to have sex frequently, but not ejaculate frequently. But interestingly, Taoists believe frequent orgasms have the opposite effect on females! Read The Tao of Health, Sex, and Longevity: A Modern Practical Guide to the Ancient Way for more info. My previous episodes with Dr. Wendy Walsh (click here for the first and here for the second) are also a great resource to check out on this topic. TIMESTAMPS: Both women and men, let's talk about testosterone libido and sexual health. Is there something we can do besides taking medications? [01:49] The first and foremost symptom of trouble is the spare tire. Belly fat is inflammatory and puts you in a state of chronic or systemic inflammation. [04:15] Surprisingly libido and testosterone do not have a direct relationship that we’ve always assumed. [08:09] Teach yourself how to relax, and then you will optimize your sexual health. [09:36] Taoism believes women should have as many orgasms as possible. This is the opposite for the male. [14:46] There are three energy sources: Qi, Shen, and Jing. [15:36] It is a much different story for females in the society of thousands of years ago. [16:32] It takes about 72 hours for sperm and seminal fluid to regenerate. [19:24] In modern society, the female is in a different role and can easily deplete her hormone balance. [21:41] The Taoists want males to withhold their orgasms frequently. [22:28] Science differs from the Taoist theory. Many studies talk about frequency of once a week as being the maximum. [27:44] Pornography is a real problem leading people to believe they are having real sex and interfering with their hormone stabilization. [29:12] Testosterone is not directly connected to libido. [30:59] We must get that life stress and balance and give yourself a fighting chance at being a good lover here with your partner. Develop a sense of humor. [33:26] Supplements: A lot of these products are actually targeting libido rather than testosterone. [38:34] The topic of testosterone replacement therapy has produced some highly disturbing statistics. Look at lifestyle changes first. Q&A: Sprinting Tips and Tricks; Breakfast - Yes or No? Intuitive Training
In today’s Q&A show, we have an interesting mix between lengthy emails and quick quips on YouTube—and lots of sprinting commentary in this episode! Other topics include: Is building an aerobic base necessary if you have minimal training time? How often should I sprint? Can AirDyne sprints replace running? How much rest should I take when sprinting? And when it comes to eating breakfast: yes or no? And should dogs eat a carnivore diet? What about Omega-3 salmon: yes or no? I also answer comments on restrictive dieting, respond to feedback from an appreciative listener about a John Gray show, and talk about being intuitive to avoid overtraining. Thanks for your interest and please participate in the conversation by emailing podcast@bradventures.com or commenting on my YouTube videos! TIMESTAMPS: Jim asks about the conflicting advice from people about slowing down to establish your aerobic base. If you don’t have time to train you still must build your aerobic base. If you can’t carry on a conversation, you are breathing too hard. [01:53] The human is only capable of maximum explosive energy for only up to around seven seconds. [13:12] Luke wants to know how often he should be sprinting in order to avoid injury. This really has to do with how much rest you take. [19:27] Zanado asks about riding the Airdyne bike as he tries to keep training after a bad accident. [23:43] Michael is asking to clarify how much rest should be between sprints. When you want to sprint, keep it between 10 and 20 seconds. [26:54] Donna from Kona asks “Breakfast or no breakfast?” One has to be careful adding fasting, which is stressful in itself, to one’s very stress everyday life. [29:49] Bacon is not one of the nutritious meats that you need in your diet. Chicken and pork have a very low score in comparison to cattle raised in the open. [36:09] Sophia wonders if the Airdyne bike is a good substitute for sprinting since she pulled her hamstring. [40:12] Grandma Patriot wants to know the best way to get her puppy started on a carnivore diet. [43:58] Regina asks “Can sprinting work for people with exercise intolerance where they crash after walking?” [49:42] Dee Bradford commented on Brad’s video where he was talking about hematocrit. A very high hematocrit is a concern. [52:16] Angela was concerned about Brad’s mention of eating wild caught salmon. What about the Omega 3s and Omega 6s? [53:23] Another YouTube comment points out that if our ancestors had more food, they probably would have lived longer. [56:47] Ian writes in the whole point of working out is to cause stress spikes to your system. [59:18] Quill5 heard the show about relationships wisdom from Dr. John Gray, and Quill learned that if they are about to get angry, they just hold on and think about it and relax and then they’re able to respond instead of react. [59:47] Chad comments that it is easy to get carried away with strategies that could be characterized as biohacking. [01:00:22] James is commenting on overtraining. When he realizes that he has been overtraining, he loses his motivation to get out there and exercise. Brad Kearns: Longevity Science is Wrong - Don't Succumb to BS Commentary and Self-Limiting Beliefs
Let's talk about longevity and how the science can sometimes be BS. A listener recently shared a prominent news story with me that suggests that humanity is hitting the upper limit of life expectancy and that people will top out at a maximum age of around 87, 90 for women and 84 for men. To quote the lead study author, S.J. .Olshansky, professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at University of Illinois, Chicago: “We’re basically suggesting that as long as we live now is about as long as we're going to live, we're squeezing less and less life out of these life-extending technologies.” In this episode, I talk about why this is a great example of how science can be stupid, inapplicable, misinterpreted and misapplied. There are highly competent researchers doing great, important work, with likely highly reliable results, but we also know that this is not always the case. In the case of the Blue Zones, principal researchers admittedly took their liberties with the information about eating habits in order to advance their plant-based agenda. The ways that research relating to exercise physiology can often deliver distorted conclusions because of factors like the nature of the subjects, the duration of the study, and the failure to control confounding variables is something I’ve discussed on the show before, and while I agree that we’re not magically going to live longer because of amazing new drugs, a far more interesting discussion to me is how we are ruining our natural human lifespan potential in modern times. My personal view on this is that almost everyone has the potential to sail smoothly to 100, taking advantage of modern medical intervention when necessary, but mainly by simply not getting in our own way (and this even includes people that have been dealt a bad hand with genetics such as a family propensity for obesity, heart disease, cancer, and so forth). In this episode, I talk about some ways to not become a statistic and how to actualize your human potential by getting out of your way and doing some cool stuff too, and why the main emphasis must always be on health span, not lifespan. TIMESTAMPS: According to a recent article advances in medical technology and genetic research are not translating into lifespan overall. Are we really at a plateau? [00:51] The problem with these studies is that the scientists are looking at a population that is leading a very unhealthy lifestyle in general. [06:57] In any scientific study, there are many variables so one always needs to view the results accordingly. [11:08] You may have familial genes for predisposition for things like obesity, heart disease, cancer and so forth, but you need environmental influences to trigger those diseases. [12:07] Can we do anything to defy those statistics about how long we are going to live? [17:05] Sleep, rest, relaxation, recovery, and downtime are critically important. [21:45] Circadian rhythm is a number one concern, according to Dr. Kruse. Minimize the light in your home after dark. [23:47] Clean up your act. You cannot focus on longevity if you have crap in your life. This includes toxic relationships. [34:58] Look at your behavior patterns. Be positive. Envision your happy healthy life because you are taking control of your diet and exercise for sailing into the long future. [40:22] The media programs us to believe something that gets us to limit our thinking. [43:49] When you focus on plant-based eating, for whatever reason, it is high risk unless you also get nutrient-dense foods. We need protein. [46:35] Walking is the single most essential requirement for your health and longevity. Move frequently and take breaks from your work. [49:57] Sprinting added to your daily routine is very valuable. [59:56] Digital technology has played havoc on our social connections. Don’t put health and longevity on the back burner. Care about it! 01:05:42] Beware of how consumerism is luring you with its profit-based goal of making money. [01:11:38] Set simple doable goals. Tom Hodge: A Sensible, Empowering Approach To Endurance Training, Dealing With Childhood Issues, And Rejecting Victim Mentality (With Mark Sisson's Help!)
Get ready listeners for a most unusual and heavy and unique show with my old friend Tom Hodge! Tom is an endurance adventurer living an interesting dream life of enjoyable but extensive endurance exercise every day, traveling the globe for major events, mixing with top athletes and watching them perform, and being on this amazing journey that he's going to tell you about in this episode. You will hear about his recent global odyssey and how it turned into a fantastic exploration of how childhood trauma affects us all our whole lives, how we use distraction, endurance, suffering, and drinking to avoid facing things and also how Tom hit rock bottom and then abruptly turned everything around by staring at a wall. You will hear Mark Sisson’s name brought up often in the story and learn about the special relationship Tom and Mark share and how Mark was the only person who “saw through everything.” I think this show will be really valuable for everyone to reflect on how we carry stuff our whole lives and the benefits of waking up and doing honest self-assessment. As my former podcast guest Bruce Lipton says, our subconscious programming occurs from age 0-7 and then we operate from our subconscious 95% of the time, for the rest of our lives! Listen as Tom goes deep and gets vulnerable, incredibly honest, and reflective as he talks about his wild ride. It’s a pretty colorful show—you will hear about how he went from UCLA student to being a highly paid model in Japan after getting randomly discovered—a career that took him around the world for 25 years. You will learn why Tom eventually rejected his victim mentality, reconciled his childhood issues with gratitude, self-exploration (without any outside help), and turned things around to where he stands today. It’s wild, it's mind blowing, and you are going to love this show, especially if you’re a younger listener and dreaming of a career and trying to figure out which career path to take. Regardless of age or where you’re at in your life, there are so many valuable lessons to take away from this show, especially the importance of self-exploration and honesty and avoiding our collective penchant for distraction every second of every day so we don’t have to face things that might unlock a path to a more fulfilling and grateful life. TIMESTAMPS: Psychological experts today talk about how our childhood programming is something we play out every day. [01:08] It shouldn’t matter if you are first or last. It is what you get out of the activity itself. [06:12] How does one define failure? How can one deal with insecurities? [07:52] Childhood programming is being studied more and more as for its effects on our current personhood. [15:42] Usually when are drinking excessive alcohol, you are trying to numb some childhood trauma. [17:40] Tom had to leave his dysfunctional family and try to make it on his own. [20:56] Because of Tom’s dyslexia, he had difficulty reading. He bought a book to read, determined to master that skill. At the same time, he committed to exercise, all this to avoid alcohol. [30:32] Addiction to exercise can be toxic. [43:58] If your grip strength is weak, it is directly correlated with your predicted lifespan. The greatest currency one can have is time. [01:00:32] How does one learn to deal with this subject of childhood trauma? [01:07:42] There is much more distractibility in today’s world. Much more stress than before advanced technology. Brad Kearns: Diet, Exercise, and Lifestyle Tips For Natural Testosterone Optimization
This is an important show to help you be the best you can be throughout life, instead of following the typical path of accelerated aging and hormone decline driven by adverse lifestyle practices. Besides doing regular blood tests for male sex hormone panels, there is an obvious scoreboard to monitor in the form of visceral fat. Fighting the spare tire battle is the essence of aging gracefully, as visceral fat accumulation begets the accumulation of more fat and suppressed hormones. The tips outlined in this episode are simple, doable, sustainable and inexpensive—I will cover fitness (emphasizing sprinting and lower body strength training), diet (emphasizing protein and ditching processed foods), some talk about supplements, healthy romantic relationship dynamics, and a bit of proven biohacking such as red light therapy and therapeutic cold exposure. TIMESTAMPS: How about some lifestyle tips for natural testosterone optimization? [00:54] When you want to think about hormone optimization, look first at sprinting. [04:18] You have to watch out for a pattern of overly stressful workouts. [07:29] The proper way to sprint is to give a near maximum effort of 92 to 95% and also take good recovery period. [09:27] Brad talks about how he does his own sprint workouts. A six to one ratio recovery to work interval is the goal. [14:19] Strength training involves emphasis on correct form, precise technique, and keeping your core stabilized. [21:09] Monitor your testosterone level for your overall level of energy, vitality and anti-aging longevity status. [31:19] When looking at your diet, the foremost objective is to consume sufficient protein. [34:27] Vegans and vegetarians need to be very careful in your efforts to consume sufficient protein. [36:35] People who engage in intermittent fasting need to be concerned about getting sufficient protein. [39:52] As we age, our protein synthesis diminishes our ability to digest and assimilate and use protein as the building blocks for muscle and all other organs. [41:47] There have always been arguments about the macronutrients, fat and carbohydrate, but the bottom line if you eliminate the nutrient deficient foods, you are on the right track. [42:52] A spare tire is a sign of serious health disturbance. [46:48] Whey protein, and creatine are the very best, cleanest, freshest natural sources of protein. [51:17] There are many supplements that claim to boost your energy, strength, build muscle and increase libido. [57:56] There are hormonal underpinnings that influence relationship dynamics. [59:45] Red light therapy can also boost your testosterone production. [01:04:08] There are some things to avoid that tank your testosterone. Stay away from plastics. [01:06:50] A sedentary lifestyle promotes chronic inflammation. Keep moving.
