Episode Transcript
Note: The following transcript is a draft transcript, and as such, may contain computer-generated mistranslations.
Bruce Langford: How did you get this Book project, about creating a legendary life, together? Was it a bit of a struggle getting this thing to happen or what?
Tommy Breedlove: So audience, Bruce, so we were getting into this struggle cause yes, it was a struggle. Fear, perfectionism, not good enough time. All of that stuff that we all deal with as human beings got in the way. But it was so funny, Bruce, it was like, we gotta get this. And so yes, it was a struggle. A good mutual friend of Bruce and I, Tom Schwab, who's also been on this show and who Bruce and Tom I believe will be remembered as Legendary humans, which is a real compliment, but he told me three years ago that you need to get your story out to the world and you need to tell your story and you need to inspire people and hopefully give people the gift of going second, which is to be raw and vulnerable about where you've been, what you've been through and how you got through it.
Tommy Breedlove: Tom said, the world needs to hear this story, especially the business world, which I came from the world of large business and financial world. So it was three years in the writing. It was all blood, sweat and tears. The original name of the book was palmed the King, which didn't ever resonate with me in some ways I think I was going to a Game of Thrones phase. And so here we are, two years in, six months publishing deadlines facing us, lots of consultants publishing the deadlines, but also pressures from the publisher on the writing. We had some consultants involved and it just never felt like me and never felt like it had my blood and my soul and my heart. It felt forced and on some levels it felt negative and not positive. And I wanted to put light out to the world and hope and simple executable tools.
Tommy Breedlove: It also felt too deep, like it was too deep and all of these subjects that could have been books in themselves. And so one night two years and six months into this process, my wife was out of town and I had gotten the latest version back from the team and, and it's all on me. It's not on them. And by the way, there are some of the most talented people I've ever met in the world and they, once I got my blood and soul on it, they made it rise and it's become the success it's become. But one year over, my wife was traveling and I might or might not have had a little too much bourbon after reading that book and it just hit me. Write the book that you needed during your transition at 36, right? The book that literally saved your life, right?

Effect on Emotions
Mindfulness has made me very thankful and appreciative of every single emotion that I have.
Every emotion is on purpose. Mindfulness has taught me to not ignore them (my emotions) and not push them away.
Thoughts on Breathing
Breathing is a mindfulness practice of making sure that I'm in my body and that I'm using my breath.
You will see that I take deep breaths often to really just be present. It's that reminder that I am here and breathe. Just simply breathing just allows you to stay present.

Bullying Story
I have been bullied the majority of my life because I am a very powerful person and people don't like that. If it comes to a career and anyone thinks that you are going to overstep them or take a position that they wanted, you're suddenly the target. In school I was a big target.
As a child I was a major tomboy and I would kick all of the guy's butts in football and hockey and basketball. I was bullied a lot for that and a lot of it still registers in my head.

Effect on Emotions
The biggest thing is with the presence and being able to take my brain back when the thoughts and the monkeys highjack my brain. Mindfulness is a way for me to calm myself, get centered, and reclaim my brain.
Thoughts on Breathing
Breathing is huge. That's where I tell people to start, actually. That's the least expensive and lowest impact way is to just breathe through your nose.
When our sympathetic nervous system takes over and we are feeling like there's a threat, we are not breathing well and we're panting or moving our chest just to reclaim breathing by taking slow deliberate breaths through our nose and telling our body it's safe, I'm in charge, I'm okay, no one's chasing us, we're safe. That is where it all begins.
Breathing is where it's at, baby!

Bullying Story
When I was eleven years old I lost my first friend to suicide. She was twelve years old. I remember I had gone to one of my first funerals and it was the first time I had ever been in a Catholic church … I remember seeing this family completely destroyed. My mother made the choice for me to go back to school that day. …
There were some boys in my class who noticed that I was different (I was still wearing my funeral clothes). I told them that I'd been to a funeral and they started making fun of me.
They started saying horrible things which I now know in hindsight as my adult self is that they were trying to deal with an unimaginable situation. [They said things like] … she probably took one look at you and jumped out the window just looking at your face. They said horrible things and I was in such shock or so insecure that I just took it. I didn't fight back or say anything.
Now, I would tell the teacher, or I would stand up and say ‘you guys are being first-class jerks. I went through a horrible situation. How dare you make fun of someone who's in such a horrible situation?'

Effect on Emotions
Mindfulness has caused me to also carry my emotions on my sleeve. I can cry easily, not just when I'm sad, but just when I'm overwhelmed, and with warm feelings and love. So I'm very emotional that way.
I have kind of corrected my anger. I don't fly off the handle like I used to in the early days, but I drank a lot back then. I've always been able to hold my emotions right there on my sleeve.
Thoughts on Breathing
I believe breathing is one of the most important things when it comes to mindfulness because that is life. Oxygen is life. One of the things you may not know about me is that I was also a stage hypnotist. One of the major things about hypnosis is the breathing.
If you're laying in bed and you can't get to sleep, if you'll just breathe and think about the breath you're taking, inhaling and exhaling. Put everything else out of your mind and just think about breathing. You can feel the life that's going into your body. I promise you, if you do that correctly, you're going to be asleep.

I was a bully when I was a kid, one time only. I'll tell you the story. It's a lesson I've held and learned from my whole life … (tune into the podcast to hear Steve's story).

Bring Calm To Your Troubled Mind
Bring calm to your troubled mind. I'll talk about four topics, specifically Breathing, Mantras, Meditation, and Sleep.
Breathing - Make a time twice each day to breathe at least 30 deliberate, deep breaths. Do an inhale through the nose if possible and then pause and exhale as much as possible. Use a counting pattern like inhale for 6, pause for 2, and exhale for 4 counts. You can do breathing exercises while walking, stretching, or enjoying nature.
Mantras - Create a personal mantra that has deep meaning for you. Take some time with a notebook and jot down words that are important to you. You can get some ideas by searching online for mantras that work for other people. Settle on a mantra for yourself that feels good, isn't too long or too short, and then commit it to memory. Every time you feel some anxiety or self-bullying happening in your mind, quickly shift to your mantra. This will help you feel calmer and more relaxed.
Meditation – Find a place that is comfortable and sit on the floor on a mat or sit in a straight-backed chair. Focus on the flame of a candle if you wish and you may want to use some essential oil in a diffuser. If you're new to meditation, use a guided meditation or nature sounds. A timer can be helpful so you won't be wondering how much time has passed. The app, Insight Timer is an excellent tool to help with meditation. You can use it only as a timer, or for nature sounds or you can find many guided meditations on the app.
Sleep - Avoid your phone, device, or screens of any kind for two or three hours before bedtime. Also, don't expose yourself to the news in the three hours before bed. Set your phone to airplane mode, turn it off, or turn off wi-fi if you have your phone anywhere near you while sleeping. Also, it's recommended to turn off the wi-fi in your home during sleep time. Eating food just before bed can also affect your sleep. Some recommend a cold shower in the hour or two leading up to bedtime, especially if you've been having a tough time getting to sleep or sleeping soundly. Caffeine can disturb your sleep, so avoid coffee, tea, or chocolate in the afternoon or evening.
Let me know if these suggestions helped you to be calmer and if you have an added suggestion, please email me at bruce@mindfulnessmode.com. I'll mention your suggestion on an upcoming episode.
Stay in the mode, Mindfulness Mode.
