Squash Anxiety
Anxiety is my topic today and I have entitled the episode, Squash Anxiety. Anxiety is a huge topic; it's even more of an issue than it used to be. I think with COVID, the world situation, and all the challenges we've been dealing with for the last few months, anxiety is on the rise. When it comes to anxiety, it's important to monitor ourselves and notice whether or not we're feeling more anxiety. If so, what can we do about it?

Anxiety Defined
Anxiety is our body's normal reaction to stress. When we're presented with danger or potential danger, our bodies respond to that stress. That is similar to how our body responds to fear. Fear is the body's response to a real or perceived imminent threat and anxiety is our body and our mind anticipating that future threat. So in knowing that, you need to think about whether this is an actual threat or simply a perceived threat? There is a big difference.
So, the first thing to ask yourself is this; am I safe in this particular moment in time? In this particular instant, am I okay? If you can answer yes to that. Then hopefully you will feel a certain amount of relief right then and there.
You may be able to identify what the perceived imminent threat is that you're experiencing. If so, you can go about, in a very rational way, assessing that situation. What are my possible choices? What can I do and how many of the thoughts that I'm thinking are actually irrational?
Your mind will assume that many of these perceived threats are actually more serious than they truly are. And that in itself can lead us to be more anxious than we really need to be. The truth is, we all experience anxiety. Knowing that we can think of practical ways to deal with that anxiety. Just the fact that you're listening to this podcast on the topic of mindfulness tells me that you suspect or maybe you know that mindfulness is a way that you can deal with this issue.
How Can We Squash Anxiety?
Research shows that approximately 19% of adults in the United States struggle with anxiety every second single day. However, the research is not telling us how many people have dealt with anxiety by using meditation or mindfulness. By using mindfulness strategies, you can actually become stronger and more capable of leading a happy, successful life that does not include overwhelming anxiety. Certain situations in life are probably going to cause you to feel anxiety no matter what you do. If you're waiting for results from a doctor, driving in terrible weather, or starting a new job, any of these kinds of situations will certainly cause most of us to feel anxiety. That is a completely normal reaction to those types of events, and your emotions are working the way they are intended to operate. Meditation, exercise, hobbies, changing life circumstances, and spending more time in nature can help lessen anxiety.

Effect on Emotions
I have learned that emotions are very different than feelings. So emotions are how I am actually thinking about feelings. So how I'm dealing with life is actually by looking at my feelings, the sensations in the body, and processing that instead of the story that I tell myself about what that feeling means. And that's how I'm able to actually be with the experience.
Thoughts on Breathing
Breathing is super important; when we stopped breathing we die. So it's kind of a big deal. I have learned so many different techniques for breathing. And I know that nowadays, I see much more of the Holotropic, faster briefing that is really popular, I am much more inclined in my own practice, to the slowing down of the breath.
One of the main practices for me has been to change the way that I'm breathing by allowing breathing through nose and mouth at the same time in and out, and to be able to slow it down so that it goes to a place that is settled.
So, for example, like, as a practice, it was breathing in, in and out for at least 20 seconds each of them. So breathing in for 10 seconds, breathing out for 20 seconds. And then sometimes, the box breathing, which is the same length for the inhaling, holding, exhaling, and call them. I think that the most important thing about breathing for me is to actually implement it, and try it out.
If you're listening to this, you can implement it. You can do that whilst you're listening, which is the key to the practice of working with the breath. We can use it as long as we are doing anything else. Living Consciously
Thoughts on Meditation
Meditation is about the state of being. I understood at one point in my practice when I was sitting for many, many hours, that I wasn't getting into this place where my experience shifted. And when it shifted to that place, I felt peace and stillness, and an openness of awareness. And due to the nature of the practices that I was doing in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, a lot of it is about bringing the teachings alive. I was studying to play an experiment, how can I bring that experience to that state of being throughout the day? Living Consciously
Regardless if I am sitting or not, regardless if I have my eyes closed or not. Nowadays, it's about keeping that state of being with everything that I'm doing, I'm talking to you now, and keeping that awareness, I am then going to see a client, I'm giving that away, and I'm going to go to university, then I'm going to give that awareness. Everything that I'm doing is just about that. And of course, I lose that, at different moments, I am not enlightened.
So I'm going to catch myself and come back to it. And yes, sometimes that means centering back by sitting down just as taking a moment. Yet, because of the fact that I have purposely chosen to live my life a little bit slower, I don't lose that as much as I used to. Because I am not going so fast that perhaps I do lose sight of it so I can stay in that state. And yes, every single day, I still do my sitting meditation, and I still do my movement meditation. And I use a lot of sound meditation and we use a lot of sound healing as well, and vibration to get to that place. And when I am also sharing that, I get that for myself. So whenever I'm sharing, teaching, and facilitating, that's also for me. Living Consciously

Bullying Story
I do remember that as a little kid, six, or seven years old, I was both on the receiving end of bullying and on the giving end of it. And looking back, if I would have had this understanding and been more mindful of the way that I can experience it, and the way that I will be more compassionate towards others, if I would have had these practices, that wouldn't have happened. Living Consciously
I know how traumatic it can be for lots of kids, and even for adults, it is quite strong, because it keeps them happy. And this is not just for kids. Yet, at that moment, as a six, seven-year-old, I would have not acted in that way. And I wouldn't have been able to actually not act in that way. Because if I would have been more mindful of how when someone else was willing, I would have been able to experience it in a different way. I wouldn't have been moved to in a sense that for someone else.
Hurt people hurt people and definitely, that is the word. The importance of bringing awareness and mindfulness into every piece of life is paramount to creating changes in the world because the more that we can catch ourselves, and the more that we can understand what has happened, and how I can process that, then I'm not going to repeat certain behaviors that are not supporting life in general. Effect on Emotions
Mindfulness has affected me by allowing me to acknowledge how I'm feeling. What do I get to do about it so that I'm not sitting, soaking in the pain or the hurt or the dysfunction? Mindfulness says, okay, yes, this has happened; acknowledge it and feel it. Now, how do you want to safely move through it?
Thoughts on Breathing
There are three main breaths that I do consistently.
So one is the one breath, just taking that really deep breath and saying it all out. I do that a lot in traffic, I live in Southern California. The Answers Are Always In You
The second one is just kind of slow deep breathing, holding it at the top of four seconds, and then slowly exhaling for four. So I usually do that one before and after my meditations, just to kind of bring me into the meditative state, and then to take me out of the meditative state.
And then my favorite breathing technique is the alternate nostril breathing, just alternating the nostrils like that one, really, really allows me to connect, and just feel and just be that's my absolute favorite breathing technique. The Answers Are Always In You

Bullying Story
When I came out of the divorce, I jumped right into another relationship. My children, of course, were a package deal. And that situation turned out to be very unhealthy for us. We were verbally bullied. Everything was about what this person had and what we were using, and we were in their house and their car.
We were locked out this one day and made to sit on the porch for hours. And it was weakening for me because I'm allowing my children to go through this because I'm not strong enough to walk away. And had I known then about mindfulness, I could have really gone inside and trusted my spirit. I could have trusted what God was guiding me to do. The Answers Are Always In You
I didn't do that until I learned what mindfulness was. And as soon as we came out of that situation, me and my children spent time together because we needed that healing. And I truly believe that when people learn mindfulness early on, it allows them to know that the pain doesn't deepen as much because you're learning how to work through it. You're learning how to breathe through it, and you're learning how even in this chaos, I can still find a little bit of joy.
So that's what mindfulness means when you are being bullied. And mindfulness can give you the confidence to tell someone how you're feeling and what you are experiencing so that you can feel safe. The Answers Are Always In You

Effect on Emotions
I don't wear my emotions out front very often. But you get me talking, especially on stage about my wife, about some moments in life and I'll start getting teary-eyed up there. And it's not that I mind showing that emotion at all. But I want to keep my stuff together. So it's bringing me back to a moment and going okay, you're here. It's cool to show the emotional side because it shows you as a human. Now, let's keep your stuff together and it's not coming from a negative place. Build to Business Freedom
Thoughts on Breathing
I've tried a lot of breathing techniques and I haven't really put the time and effort and energy into learning different breathing techniques. I am a little fascinated by them and I do explore them every once in a while. But I can tell you, for me, the focus is better at this point in time and breathing because I want my farm in the dark and listening to podcasts while I'm doing it. And doing that allows me to get laser-focused on the companies and business and that's been tremendous for me. Build to Business Freedom

Bullying Story
Growing up as a kid, I was the youngest of three boys and I was a runt and tiny, tiny dude and getting picked on more by my brothers. Being put in sleeping bags and rolled downstairs. I got locked in a gas dryer once upon a time.
My brothers were bigger, tough dudes and now the tables have turned later in life. They're not as tough as they thought they were, but four years in the Marine Corps and 20 years of living, you know, you grow up and you learn a few things. And I don't know for sure if mindfulness would have helped me back then, because I was dealing with more on the physical side of things. But I wonder if I would have stood up for myself a little bit more.
As a little kid, the answer was to run to mom, run to dad, and they would play defender. I wonder if I would have, at that point, been aware enough to stand on my feet. Yeah. It was really, really cool to watch. Build to Business Freedom

Effect on Emotions
Meditation has helped me be less reactive. I recently started meditating regularly. I don't meditate every day, but I'm meditating more often. And I really believe that when I do that, my day is much more positive. I'm less reactive and much more able to take on stress throughout my day.
Thoughts on Breathing
Two different things. One is I actually did some breathwork sessions with someone in Denver when my wife and I lived there. It absolutely was like a psychedelic experience. Without psychedelics, it was unbelievable. I absolutely thought it was a game-changer. And I was so grateful. During the first session, I cried halfway through, like, it was so amazing.
The other thing that I do is take breaths, three seconds in and pause, and five seconds out and pause. So the entire breath is 10 seconds. And that really helps me calm down and activate my parasympathetic nervous system. And I do that, actually, before my workouts and at different times throughout the day.

Bullying Story
This is a very personal topic for me because I actually was bullied all the time in elementary school. So what happened was, we had a bus driver, who was very elderly, and he basically just didn't care about what happened on the bus, because he was like, at the end of his career, and he just didn't give a crap and so there was basically no enforcement of anything on the bus. As a kid, I didn't look like I do today; I was a very skinny kid who was not very outgoing. I wasn't very self-confident.
The other part of this equation was my dad. He was a high school vice principal and so being a vice principal, there was always an emphasis on education. But he also would always say don't fight back and don't do anything if someone does something to you. And I understand why he said that.
But basically, then what happened was, I was bullied on the bus all the time. Kids would take my jacket and smear it on the ground during winter when it was all snowy out and dirty. On the bus, one kid even lit my hair on fire with a lighter and that was pretty tough for me. Because basically, my dad and my parents told me don't do anything.
I understand why they did that. But I wish I had the tools that I do now in terms of how to process that or deal with it, or, you know, just approach that situation differently. But as a kid in elementary school, you don't really have those tools in your toolbox. That makes me feel very protective of people who are bullied today because now I'm in a position where I'm physically bigger than 98% of the humans on Earth. Just because I've worked out for 25 years. And so I want to make sure that people don't get picked on because I don't want people to go through what I went through.

Thoughts on Breathing
I'm a big believer in breathing. It's how I fall asleep at night. There are times when I would sit in bed and if I get really anxious or nervous, or if there's something going on the next day, I would just focus on the standard breathing.
I think it was in Karate Kid where he learns how to read that block of ice and I just thought that's kind of goofy.
I remember thinking, I'm just gonna breathe and that was the first time I ever started focusing on breathing. Everybody has moments of anxiousness or nervousness. And when I play the piano, whether it's in front of a church or for whatever, I have to remember, if I don't breathe, my leg starts to bounce up and down like that. I don't need that going on. I'm a big believer in breathing properly, mindful breathing,

Bullying Story
There were some friends when we were in fourth grade. We noticed there were five kids that were going to a bus and catching a bus, they'd come to our school and then catch another bus to another school, and they'd have to wait around for 15 or 20 minutes. They were not part of our group; they were different. And it led to fighting just for a week or so.
It was something in mindfulness if we had even stopped to think that these are kids just going to another school and they live in our neighborhoods and the fear that some of them may have when we started seeing something, especially in fights, just waiting for a bus trying to mind their own business, the fear that they must have had to come to school, it hurts.
One positive out of that is one of the kids that I remember; he ended up coming to our school three years later and became one of our best friends.

I'm old, I had all my emotions removed in the seven days I never would have survived. They're gone. They're just gone.
I was brought up at a time when your emotions should never, never appear in the room with you. I mean, we didn't have them. And so I'm afraid to a great extent, I still don't have them and maybe humor is the way I deal with my emotions, for the most part.

Bullying is such a universal subject and in my life, I more than once had to kind of go against the grain. I tend to be a pretty even-keeled guy; it has helped me a lot. So the highs aren't too high, and the lows aren't too low. And so I think similar to speaking, when we were talking about what are the things you can and can't control, I think that that's true just in life in general, regardless of whether you're on a stage or not. Therefore
Thoughts on Breathing
Whenever you are backstage, I mean, there's a lot of speakers who do a lot of different things. And some are listening to music to hype them up. And some just want to be very quiet and still and just focus on their breathing. And I think you really have to figure out what works best for you. Therefore
So with breathing, I think you need to take some long breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. That can really kind of slow your heart rate and just calm some of the nerves or anxiety that you may feel. That can certainly be very effective. Therefore

I remember several years ago, I was speaking and I did a lot in the education space speaking for school assemblies. One time I was speaking and it was like the Friday before spring break. It was at the end of the day, and so the only thing standing between several hundred teenagers and spring break was me. And so they don't care at all what I had to say. So
So partway through the presentation, I remember the announcement comes over the PA system, that the girl's volleyball team was dismissed to go to their game. So they had an away game. And so you've got a couple of dozen girls all over this gymnasium, standing up and starting to leave.
Then there were a bunch of teenage guys just being goofy and dumb and they started standing up and leaving. All of a sudden, we've got 30, 40, 50 people all over the room just leaving. Some were clearly supposed to leave and some were clearly not supposed to. There was just kind of like this chaos of this moment. Therefore
I remember one time I was speaking and a dog comes running into the room and just comes zipping around like nobody was paying attention and everybody was distracted. I remember one time speaking at a camp in this metal building. And there was a big storm that came in and it was hailing like really, really bad. Effect on Emotions
I don't react to them, I can identify them and go, Oh, this is a fear, oh, this is anxiety, oh, this is a sadness, and then not react to them, identify it, kind of nurture it internally like, okay, you got this, and then go into a little bit more analytical place of what to do with it at the moment.
And if I did something I need to deal with maybe I need to give myself those 15 minutes to really feel it. And then go back into activity. What it does is allows me to cancel a negative thought, or to not have my day go off the rails because I got angry or I got sad about something or something that came in that I wasn't expecting, I can really put it in its right place and then reset.
Thoughts on Breathing
I noticed when I need to stop and take a full breath in. We all tend to do this to the point that when we're busy, like I gotta get this done. Oh, you're panting stop and breathe. Let your brain let your body feel where it's all coming from in the body. Relax into this, then go into the activities. And the breathing I noticed is a big, big deal.

Bullying Story
I was bullied a lot as a kid. I was chased home, spit on, and teased. There was a lot of bullying as a young child and I think if I had been taught mindfulness, I would have realized this wasn't about me, it was about them. It was something broken in them, maybe something going on in their home. I think if I had understood the bigger picture to forgive and let that go; to not just see them as bullies, but see them as individuals that just had brokenness they weren't dealing with, even as children, then I could have not attached those to myself for so many years.
I was the choir geek. I was the one that had bad hair and braces. My brother was captain of the football team. He was a senior and I was a freshman. I remember his friends even picking on me or throwing footballs at my head in class.
I didn't understand then that mindfulness could have helped me just let it go. Let them go and find their own journey. It'll catch up with them, you just stay true to yourself and evolve.
I just want to hug them and say, it's okay. These are others projecting their own stuff. Everybody has their own brokenness, and they're dealing with it in different ways.
