David was at his lowest point, running away from his son Absalom who wanted to kill him. Pastor Bobby shows us four things about David here: he was completely honest with God about his sorrows and fears; he turned his focus entirely on God and remembered that God was his shield; and he trusted so much in the Lord that even in the face of torment he slept, and he expected God to do what is consistent to his nature. Building upon his first message on following Jesus, Kong Hee teaches that there is a cost to following Christ—it is not an easy thing. As Jesus said in Luke 9:23, we are firstly to deny ourselves, and then to follow Him. Denying oneself is to not give in to unrighteous cravings. Pastor Kong details how to resist and repudiate self-gratification, self-vindication and self-exaltation like Jesus did in Matthew 4—we can't do it without the Holy Spirit. In his first sermon of 2020, Kong Hee sets the direction for the year with a sermon about the central theme of the New Testament: to follow Jesus. God's ultimate desire is that we imitate Jesus, and become like Him in every dimension of our lives. Pastor Kong shows through Scripture how holiness is synonymous with Christlikeness, and that Christlikeness is the nine fruit of the Spirit. These nine fruit are impossible to attain in our human strength, that is why we urgently need the Holy Spirit.
