Dr. Jessica Hekman DVM, PhD and Kim Brophey CDBC, FDM
If you’re on social media, or just have an interest in dog training and behavior in general, you might have seen the controversy surrounding a research article that was published around the end of April, so just a couple months before the release of this podcast episode. The paper is titled "Ancestry Inclusive Dog Genomics Challenges Popular Breed Stereotypes". It’s a bit of a mouthful, but the short summary of controversy is that many in the mainstream media or on social media were saying that "breed totally matters, while others were staying, see, breed doesn’t matter at all." So the first thing that came to my mind was, let’s get one of the authors of the paper onto the podcast. And the next thing that came to my mind was, let’s get Kim Brophey to be my guest host on this episode, as she is someone that has talked so much about breed and behavior tendencies in her past appearances as a guest on this show. And so I brought Jessica Hekman, who is one of the authors and Kim Brophey together, and and let’s just say, these two brilliant minds do not disappoint in this episode, as we take a deep dive into not only dispelling some of the misunderstandings from the research, but also into genetics and aggression in general. Dr. Kristina Spaulding PhD
Stress, hormones, emotions, impulse control, arousal, cognition --- a lot of different words that get thrown around in our conversations about dogs and behavior. In this episode with the incredibly informative Dr. Kristina Spaulding, we unpack many of those terms, and why they are so important to define correctly when discussing aggression in dogs. Kristina does an amazing job of breaking down these concepts in the show, and I hope to see the conversation continue in the dog training community. Pine Irwin CPDT-KA, ABKA L2, QTDE
Hey friends, thanks for joining me for this episode of Fresh Bites where we chat with rising stars in our community and hear new ideas and concepts to working with aggression in dogs. I have the pleasure of having a great conversation with Pine Irwin in this episode about determining outcomes in aggression cases, and realistic expectations formed through using objective measures. Because let’s face it, there are a lot of emotions swirling around with all the humans involved with an aggression case, including the dog’s guardians, trainers, veterinarians, rescue or shelter teams, and everyone else that may be involved in the case, so decisions can often be difficult to make and filled with subjectivity. I think you will get some nice takeaways from this episode with Pine. I come from a long line of animal lovers, with a grandfather who was a veterinarian and having been raised on a horse farm. I took an early interest in working with animals through horses, and then the family german shepherd after I found a book on making dog agility equipment in the public library. I became interested in behavior when 14 years ago I adopted an aussie with a serious aggression issue. He lead me to understanding behavior, drive and motivators in a way I had never thought of before and was the dog who pioneered my cross over from a more traditional training background to one based in modern science and understanding. I have since engaged in experimenting with applying force free training techniques to feral mustangs (including my own who at the time I started working with him had already been labeled as a "Dangerous, aggressive horse") , amorous ducks bent on engaging in aggressive displays of romance with human caretakers, and the more then occasional semi-feral dog caught in a live trap after being dumped in wilderness locations. I specialize in dealing with aggression presenting behaviors, and the "Weird" stuff that pops up in working with animals. I am the head of the behavior department, and dog end of a rescue organization that deals with abandoned, and neglected animals in southern Idaho. I work as a consultant with the HSUS, Local rescue organizations and colleagues who I am foolish enough to give unfettered access toLearn more about options for help for dogs with aggression here:AggressiveDog.comLearn more about our annual Aggression in Dogs Conference here:The Aggression in Dogs ConferenceSubscribe to the bonus episodes available here:The Bitey End of the Dog Bonus EpisodesCheck out all of our webinars, courses, and educational content here:Webinars, courses, and more!

Leslie McDevitt MLA, CDBC, CPDT-KA
You might have heard the saying that "dog training is both an art and science." And I kind of agree with that statement because training plans, even when rigorously based in science, can often benefit from creative thinking. I can’t think of any other trainer that thinks more creatively in the work she has done with dogs, especially the dogs who have issues on-leash. Leslie McDevitt's "Look at That" (L.A.T.) from her seminal work with the Control Unleashed series is just one example of the outside the box thinking that goes on in her brain, and in this episode we chat about an awesome variety of ideas where Leslie’s creativity shines through including things like LATTE, Cooperative Counter Conditioning, and Pattern Games, all used to help dogs with aggression. For additional resources on helping dogs with aggression, visit:https://aggressivedog.comIf you want to take your knowledge and skills for helping dogs with aggression to the next level, check out the Aggression in Dogs Master Course and get a FREE preview here:https://aggressivedog.thinkific.com/courses/aggression-in-dogsDon't miss out on the third annual Aggression in Dogs Conference 9/30-10/2/22:https://aggressivedog.com/conference/Woof Cultr swag!https://woofcultr.com/collections/the-aggression-in-dogs-conferenceAbout Leslie:Leslie McDevitt, MLA, CDBC, CPDT-KA is the author of the internationally popular Control Unleashed series of books and DVDs. Her books have been translated into many languages, and she has helped people all over the world learn how to use her science-based methods to help companion, performance, and working dogs learn how to functional optimally without stress in very challenging environments. For close to twenty years, Leslie's methods have empowered diverse populations of dogs--companion dogs, shelter dogs, competitive performance dogs, K9 SAR and detection dogs, therapy dogs, and more. If you have a dog that worries about stuff that happens—other dogs, people, noises, the unexpected–or you are a giant behavior nerd that is interested in counter conditioning with an operant base using startbutton behaviors--Leslie has lots of tools for you. Leslie has taught all over the world, and is especially proud of her roles as Clicker Expo Speaker and consultant for the Penn Vet Working Dog Center. She is also very proud of her ever-growing number of CCUIS, Certified Control Unleashed Instructors. Leslie lives outside of Philadelphia with children, dogs, cats, a bunny and a pony. Daniel Shaw CDBC
In this season, you might have noticed we’ve talked about systematic approaches to changing behavior several times, which is exciting for me to see happening as we can sometimes witness spaghetti on the wall approaches in dog training. Daniel Shaw joins me for this episode of Fresh Bites on the Bitey End of the Dog for a wonderful chat around his systematic formulation approach to working with aggression in dogs. This can include principles such as CBT skills, systemic counseling principles, and psychodynamic principles. These might seem like fancy words, but Daniel does a fantastic job of breaking things down in an understandable way.
