James Esses is James is a Criminal Barrister and Trainee Psychotherapist. He is the co-founder of Thoughtful Therapists and advocates around the political, legal, health and cultural impacts of gender ideology. Following the horrendous attack on Salman Rushdie by a Muslim fundamentalist, Peter Whittle is joined by Wasiq Wasiq, Associate Fellow at the Henry Jackson Society's Centre on Radicalisation & Terrorism, for a wide-ranging discussion about Islam, Islamism and the fundamentalist agenda in Britain. Wasiq Wasiq is a founding trustee for the charity Muslims Against Antisemitism (MAAS). Moreover, with a particular expertise in Islamism, he has been raising the issue of how non-violent Islamism is threatening western democracies. Most recently, Wasiq was one of two lay advisors on the Singh Investigation into alleged discrimination and ‘Islamophobia’ in the Conservative Party. The report concluded that allegations of institutional racism against the Party were not borne out by the evidence available to the Investigation. This ground breaking and historic report was fully accepted by the Conservative Party whom have now agreed to all recommendations. The National Trust, a beloved national institution tasked with preserving Britain's heritage, has become mired in controversy in recent years. Recent activities by the leadership at the National Trust have been subject of debates in both Houses of Parliament, and even more worryingly, an investigation by the Charities Commission. On this week's #SWYSI we are joined by commentator, author and GB News presenter Andrew Doyle to discuss his upcoming book, "The New Puritans: How the Religion of Social Justice Captured the Western World", an exploration of our current cultural climate and an urgent appeal to return to a truly liberal society. The puritans of the seventeenth century sought to refashion society in accordance with their own beliefs, but they were deep thinkers who were aware of their own fallibility. Today, in the grasp of the new puritans, Andrew Doyle sees a very different story. According to Doyle, the new puritanism movement, leading a cultural revolution driven by identity politics and so-called 'social justice', is best understood as a religion - one that makes grand claims to moral purity and tolerates no dissent. Its disciples even have their own language, rituals and a determination to root out sinners through what has become known as 'cancel culture'. Doyle examines the underlying belief-systems of this ideology, and how it has risen so rapidly to dominate all major political, cultural and corporate institutions. He reasons that, to move forward, we need to understand where these new puritans came from and what they hope to achieve. Written in the spirit of optimism and understanding, Doyle offers an eloquent and powerful case for the reinstatement of liberal values and explains why it's important we act now. There are no universal values or human rights, argues Dr. David Starkey at our St. George's Day conference. The West's creation of international law, and international bodies to govern an international rules based system lies at the heart of the West's current problems. The West believes all peoples and regions of this world share universal beliefs and values. They don't. Russia and China understand this. We don't. Just at The West's moment of triumph, when it saw its enemies vanquished, it finds itself in its greatest identity crisis. How did the West end up mired in the identity politics of race, gender and sexuality? Why is it losing dominance on the global stage to Russia and China, the latter a superpower created by the West via entry to the WTO.
