To mark the launch of our new book "Fighting Back: Defending Britain & The West in the Culture War", we present a special edition of #SWYSI that brings together 3 inspiring people who refused to bow down to the institutions that tried to penalise, suppress or fire them for expressing their views. We hope their tales serve to give hope and inspiration to others out there who may encounter similar experiences. Harry Miller won a legal challenge against a national policy for police forces to record gender-critical views as non-crime "hate incidents". Humberside Police visited Harry Miller in January 2020 after a complaint over alleged transphobic tweets he made. It was recorded on a national database as a non-crime hate incident. But the Court of Appeal ruled on Monday the guidance was wrongly used and it had a "chilling effect" on Mr Miller's freedom of speech. Amy Gallagher is suing the Portman Clinic in north London, part of The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, claiming discrimination on the basis of race, religion and philosophical belief. She believes the NHS is forcing racist ideology on students by promoting critical race theory in its classes. She objected to a lecture entitled “whiteness – a problem of our time” in October 2020, where attendees were forced to confront “the reality of white privilege” and in another race lecture the following month, she was told that “Christianity is racist because it is European” by a talk leader. Nick Buckley MBE was cancelled in June 2020 from the multi award-winning charity he founded when online activists came for him for criticising Black Lives Matter. The trustees panicked, allowing Nick to be removed from his post. Within five weeks, Nick had forced the trustees to resign en-mass, and took back his role as chief executive. Peter Hitchens returns to our #SWYSI sofa to discuss his new book: "A Revolution Betrayed: How Egalitarians Wrecked the British Education System", which also provides an in-depth look at what will happen if things don't change radically. There are few subjects that cause parents more stress than the education of their children. Peter Hitchens describes the misjudgements made by politicians over the years that have led to the increase of class distinction and privilege in our education system. This is of course the opposite of what was intended. Given that the cost of private secondary education is now in the region of £200,000 and the cream of Comprehensive Schools are now oversubscribed, parents are spending thousands on private tutoring and fee-paying prep schools in order to get their children into these academically excellent schools. Meanwhile hypocritical Labour politicians like Diane Abbott send their children to expensive private day schools. So, what alternatives - if any - are there? Peter Hitchens argues that in trying to bring about an educational system which is egalitarian, the politicians have created a system which is the exact opposite. And what's more, it is a system riddled with anomalies - Sixth Form Colleges select pupils on ability at the age of 15, which rules out any child who does not have major educational backing from home (heavy involvement by working parents or private tutors, for example) and academies also are selective, though they pretend not to be. Student Samantha Smith is a survivor of long-term child sexual abuse in Telford. She has waived her anonymity to speak out on behalf of the victims of grooming and sexual abuse and hopefully, by doing so, encourage and empower other victims to also come forward. She joins us to reveal the horrific treatment she received not only at the hands of her abusers but also from the institutions that were meant to protect her: police, social services, the local authority. Girls like her were belittled, dismissed and denigrated by police and social workers who, for reasons of political correctness and class bias, chose to side with the abusers rather than the victims. She reveals that whilst West Mercia police did nothing to help her when she tried to seek help against her abusers, as soon as she went on television to speak about her ordeal and expose police failings, she was suddenly a person of interest and received an intimidating visit the very next day. Samantha says the police had no grounds for visiting her and it felt like they wanted to silence her for speaking out.
