018 Adventures in iCloud

It's been pretty smooth sailing for Dave and his iPhone X, but Melissa went on a fishing expedition with the whole family in iCloud and reeled in a Black Friday deal or two. Notch or no notch, Apple has kept us all very busy applying software patches and spackle across their product line. Lots of growing pains are being smoothed over, so don't hesitate to apply the latest updates for iOS 11.2, watchOS 4.2, and tvOS 11.2, as well as several macOS updates. If you are curious about getting your whole family connected with iCloud this holiday season, have a listen to this deep dive for some ideas on what's possible before you attempt to connect accounts or migrate data. Full show notes are at InTouchwithiOS.com Direct Link to Audio News: iPhone Crashing with Apple's 12/2 Notification Bug? Melissa had some questions last episode about how Face ID works in the dark and our friend Barry has some good resources for helping us all learn more about it: Face ID — iMore Apple's New Face ID Biometric System Works in the Dark and When Your Face is Obscured by Hats and Beards — MacRumors How to "see" the crazy dot map the iPhone X uses to scan your face — iMore Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals of note were BestBuy's 2017 iPad sale and Amazon's digital $100.00 iTunes Gift Card deal. Keep checking your local listings because this is the time of year for those kinds of sales. iTunes Gift Card deals are the best way to reduce your costs on iCloud Storage Plans when you buy it at the yearly price in the form of iTunes credit. Apple will first charge your iTunes Gift Card credit before it charges your credit card on file, so keep it topped up and save with these annual sales. Melissa's new 2017 iPad was instrumental in helping to get iCloud Family Sharing set up because it runs iOS 11 which is required for administering a Family Sharing account. Some might view all she went through as a total nightmare, but she sees it as an opportunity to dissect how it all works and what might suit the needs of others. Apple has a handy Apple Support app where you can get help from the comfort of your couch. They can run a remote diagnostic on your device and advise you on what steps to take in troubleshooting. Melissa recommends taking screenshots along the way to document the information. 017 Resistance is Futile

Dave has an iPhone X and more iOS updates have been released. Melissa wants to know just how stealthy is an iPhone X? Dave demonstrates Animoji and hilarity ensues. It's soon time for Thanksgiving in the US and that means lots of food followed by lots of shopping. We list apps and websites to check for scoping out the best deals on iOS gear and app sales. Full show notes are at InTouchwithiOS.com Direct Link to Audio It just wouldn't have been a successful iPhone X launch if Dave had not obtained one for himself on 11/03 so he gives us a full review on how it was purchased and set up. He discusses his change of heart from the iPhone 8 Plus and explains how it does take a little time getting used to no home button and swiping up to close apps. Melissa has lots of questions about the new gestures and the stealthiness of iPhone X as they discuss Face ID vs Touch ID and many other features and comparisons between the two iPhone models. 014 Upgraded

Living in iOS 11 and watchOS 4: ways to get the latest upgrade and updates on to your device, what we like about it, hiccups to be aware of, what's in store for the future? Visiting new Apple Stores, err, Town Squares and Plazas and customer service experiences. Tips for using your devices in the event of an emergency. All this and more, available in our full show notes at InTouchwithiOS.com Dave shares his experiences with Apple Watch repair and iPhone replacement. He has recently visited some of the newly renovated Apple retail spaces. We still need to get used to calling them Town Squares or Plazas. Here is a demo Dave made that shows Qi wireless charging in action. Dave has been running the betas and Melissa has mixed thoughts on using iMazing for both iOS 11.0.1 and 11.0.2 upgrade and update. Changes of note in watchOS: easier-on-the eyes passcode entry screen; Silent Mode takes an extra swipe to get to. iPhone battery drain is pretty bad on iPhone 6s, but it will hopefully get better soon. 3D Touch App Switcher is missing, but Craig says it's coming back. Melissa is on the hunt for the best iPhone 8 Plus case. Please send us your suggestions! It needs to be a wallet style with strap and taking photos with it needs to be easy and not get in the way of the flash. • Tips "Here's How to Get Better Battery Life in iOS 11" — the Mac Observer Emergency Tools Medical ID in iOS makes it easier to become an organ donor. Here is a tutorial Melissa created using the new screen recording feature in iOS: "Change Apple's Podcasts Default Settings to Save on Your Data Plan" — TheMacMommy Go to Settings > Podcasts > switch Cellular Data: OFF if you want to be sure you're not using your data plan when you leave Wi-Fi. Change Refresh Every to: Manually so podcasts are not downloading in the background. You'll have more control over when you want to get them to your phone. Change Download Episodes: OFF to save data, or ON if you know you want to download podcasts for listening to them later or while traveling, then only download them while on Wi-Fi. Switch Delete Played Episodes: ON so they don't fill up your phone over time. • Apps iMazing • Contact: email us • like our Facebook page, tweet @InTouchwithiOS, @TheMacMommy or @daveg65 • Meta: ITWIOS 014 Upgraded was recorded October 4, 2017.
