#49 - Spending Time Doing What You're Good At - Nick Nauta

Nick's Bio:Nick Nauta has been practicing financial planning since moving to the Lansing area in 2006. After studying Financial Management and Economics at Northern Michigan University, Nick ventured into the financial planning industry. Having a young daughter and wife, Nick wanted to stay in Michigan. At the time he graduated, one of the few jobs available for a finance major was as a financial advisor.Nick struggled through his first few years in the profession. He relates the struggle to his early memories of money living in Spring Lake, Michigan. One of the things he learned about money when he was growing up was the people who seemed to have the most of it, weren’t inherently happier than those who didn’t. When he started in the financial advising industry, the profession appeared to be all about making money, something he didn’t hold in high esteem. Some years later, around the time his son was born, Nick finally started to figure out his place in the financial planning world. He was challenged to answer the question of why he did what he did. Thinking back on his early memories of money, he concluded he was in the financial planning profession to help people realize their life goals.Nick enjoys giving back to the community as well as his profession. He is currently the past president of the Davies Project, Treasurer of Loaves and Fishes homeless shelter, President of Delta-side business association, and Secretary of Kiwanis of Delta Township. Nick is a Certified Financial Planner™, Chartered Life Underwriter™, Registered Life Planner™, board member of the Greater Lansing Estate Planning Council, and a member of the following professional associations:CFP® BoardNational Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA)Financial Planning Association (FPA)Fee-Only NetworkXY Planning Network (XYPN)Kinder Institute of Life PlanningGreater Lansing Estate Planning CouncilNick's Social: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicknautacfp/

#47 - Serving People in the Accumulation Phase - Jeff McDermott

Jeff's Bio:While my interest in personal finance dates back to grade school “stock picking” assignments and investment fundamentals senior projects in high school, my career helping individual investors began in 2003. After spending time managing a branch office for a large online brokerage firm, I joined one of the nation's largest retirement plan providers as an advisor providing comprehensive financial planning advice for high net worth clients.  I received a bachelor's degree in finance and an MBA both from the University of Central Florida. In 2016 I completed the requirements to earn the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation. Over time I have gained nearly two decades of experience evaluating investments, retirement plans, insurance offerings, and many of the complicated elements of your financial life you may be struggling with. More recently in 2021, I added the Certified Student Loan ProfessionalTM designation to gain the knowledge to provide more complete planning around student loans within a client's overall financial plan. I always had a vision for a firm dedicated to helping people become financially independent, not just helping those who are already there. The decisions we make early in our financial lives, whether they are good or bad, will compound positively or negatively for decades into the future. In 2020 I founded Create Wealth Financial Planning to help the individuals and families I work with make positive financial decisions while they still have time to make a dramatic impact.  In between client meetings I like to keep a clear head playing piano - usually classical or rock songs, or weightlifting out in the garage and getting myself ready to compete some day. I also enjoy working on my public speaking as a member of the Deerwood Toastmasters of Jacksonville, FL. On a nice morning you might catch me hacking up the golf course. I married my wonderful wife Michele in 2007 after we met in college a few years earlier. We live in Saint Johns, Florida raising our two amazing daughters and we love spending time with family and friends, a quick trip to St. Augustine or to the beach, and cheering on our favorite sports teams.Jeff's Social:https://www.linkedin.com/in/jmcdermott/Twitter: @Jeff_McD_CWfpInstagram: dollarsanddeadliftsMusic in this episode was obtained from Bensound.

#45 - Creating Systems and Processes for Rapid Growth - Matt Pruitt

Matt's Bio:I spent over 10 years helping corporations, hedge funds and institutional investors squeeze every last dollar out of their investments before I finally asked myself: what is most important in life, and what's keeping me from getting there? So, what's important to me:  spending time with my family, pursuing a career I'm passionate about and running a business that allows me to partner with like-minded individuals. My dad passed away at age 58 and I constantly remind myself that life is short, and I better not regret how I live it. I am now lucky enough to say I work in a field that brings me happiness and fosters my personal values.A perfectionist by nature and self-proclaimed finance/tax nerd, I genuinely love helping individuals simplify their financial lives so they too can focus on what's most important to them.Social: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matt-pruitt-cfp%C2%AE-cfa-02aab548/Website:https://exhalewealth.com/

#44 - Serving Military Families and Hiring People Not Positions - Sean Gillespie

Sean's Bio:I graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992 and served in the Navy for twenty years as a surface warfare officer. My education in financial planning began in the spring of 1994 when a Naval Academy classmate who cared enough about my wife and me to not take no for an answer told us, “We’re going to dinner Wednesday night.” Tom routinely chose great restaurants, so we showed up at the appointed place and time without discussion or complaint.Dinner was unremarkable. Fixed menu rubber chicken fare. Perfectly adequate, just not the over-the-top good stuff we were used to Tom picking out. But the seminar given during dessert changed our lives. In less than sixty minutes, we were shown the simple outline of a financial plan to get us moving in a sustainable fashion toward a comfortable retirement. And afterward, Tom introduced us to the man who would be our agent for twenty years. Dave helped put us on our path to financial independence in 1994 and helped us make the adjustments along the way to keep us on it. And when I retired after twenty years of Navy service, he mentored me into the financial services business.Among dozens of things Dave taught me over twenty years, two of them were critically important. One of them was the sort of product knowledge that got me credentialed and sufficiently competent to help others identify their own goals for financial independence. Far more important was the spirit of service he exemplified every day. Lots of people talk the “client always comes first” talk. Dave walked it, being just as candid with us when we were on track as when he thought we were getting ready to make a mistake. And we always felt his recommendations were in our best interests. It wasn’t just that his interests were secondary. They didn’t enter into the conversation at all. It was in that spirit that I got licensed in 2013 to help families plan for their own sustainable financial futures. My wife Jennifer and I have been married since 1992. When I retired, we decided to put down roots in Chesapeake Virginia, in the community where we have owned a home since 2001 and, when not stationed overseas, raised our three daughters.Social:https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-gillespie-1801316/
