Invest in Yourself and Invest in Others - A Wide-Ranging Conversation about Mental Health, Well-Being, and Personal Development with Dr. Jacqui Horner

What would happen if as Veterinarians we all decided to invest in our mental health, well-being, and personal development? It’s a great question, and one that this episode's guest vulnerably dives into with us. Dr. Horner is a native of Clarksdale, Mississippi (Home of the Blues), but has called Georgia ‘home’ since 2001. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2010 and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2015 from the University of Georgia. She currently practices small animal relief work part-time while building the mission and vision of Resilience Rising. She is extraordinarily passionate about mental health, well-being, mindfulness, leadership, and personal development. In this wide-ranging conversation, Dr. Horner opens up in a variety of ways as we cover: - Her vulnerable personal journey through both work and life induced mental health challenges - Learning what's normal and abnormal when it comes to Vet Med Lifestyle - Using social media in an empowering way to speak about mental health as opposed to "dumping" online - The Resiliency Rising platform from which Dr. Horner is sharing her experiences - What's keeping people, specifically Veterinarians, from investing in their personal development She and her fiance have two fur children of her own: Chance, a Golden Retriever, and Heidi, a German Shepherd, who all live together in West Midtown, Atlanta. Her favourite hobbies include running, lifting, hiking, cooking, reading self-development books, and travel. Random, fun fact: She is fully bilingual, with Spanish as her second language. Thank you to Dr. Jacqui Horner for joining us on the show. A Guide to Goal Setting with Dr. Michael Bugg

Are you living an intentional life or are you just taking what life gives you? The reality is you have made a decision around goal setting whether you realize it or not. And if you're going to live life to the fullest, does it not make sense to be intentionally creating what you want as opposed to merely receiving what comes your way? In this episode of the show, Dr. Michael Bugg speaks on a subject for which he is deeply passionate about: goal setting. The statistics show that 95% of people don’t set goals. It's our aim that if you haven't been a goal setter to date, or don't have a great goal setting process in place, that this episode will inspire you to take the next step in your goal setting practice. It's time to get intentional with creating the future life you desire, as Dr. Michael Bugg shares the 5 steps in his goal setting process which includes: Visualization: - Focusing on the FEELING, Eliminating the HOW, and DREAMING about what's possible Sorting through your life pillars: - Ranking from 1-10 the three questions that help Mike narrow in on the goals to focus on Breaking your goals down: - The 12 Week Year Break your quarterly into weekly. - Dropping your recurring tasks and priorities into your weekly plan - The Sunday System Daily Habits - The Miracle Morning - One Priority - Daily Progress The best time to start is now. The best place to start is right where you are. And remember: it’s the person you become in the process of working towards achieving your goals that is the biggest benefit to you and the quality of your life. The Case for Rural Veterinary Practice with Dr. Trevor Hook

Would you rather be practicing veterinary medicine in a small town or in a big city? If you ask Dr. Trevor Hook, you may find yourself convinced to go with the former! Dr. Trevor Hook took his undergraduate studies in Animal Sciences at the University of Alberta and graduated with honours in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan in 2011.  After graduating, he started at Central Veterinary Clinic, a mixed animal practice in Ponoka, AB, where after he developed his skills out of school it didn't take long for him to question whether the grass was greener in other places. He decided to pursue other options back in the city, but quickly found himself drawn back to the shorter commutes, community relationships, and simpler life of being in a small town. In 2015 he became a partner of Central Veterinary Clinic, right before the practice expanded into a new facility in 2016. He remains at the clinic to this day and they have recently established a second location. Trevor received the ABVMA Young Veterinarian of the Year award in 2015 and was selected for the CVMA Emerging Leaders Program Program in 2018 and Central Veterinary Clinic has received multiple awards for its strong mentorship and teaching environment. Trevor has special interest in equine performance horse medicine, orthopedic surgery and dairy herd management. He lives with his wife Deserae have 3 young children and if you don't find him at work, you will find him wrestling with his kids. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family in the outdoors, hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, adventure racing, and really playing any sport, especially hockey In our conversation with Trevor we cover: Deciding whether or not to chase the grass that MAY be greener on the other side The pros of practicing veterinary medicine in rural communities Creating a quality clinic culture in rural mixed practices Mastering work / life integration Why you've got to keep learning to create an interesting career for yourself Trevor's open and honest take on the challenges of running and managing the business of veterinary practice Building trust with your clients (it takes time!) Understanding Contracts (From Both Sides of the Table)

Whether you're a veterinary clinic owner, working on behalf of a corporation, or a veterinary professional employee, understanding contracts is essential to knowing what each party is responsible for within a working relationship.  In this conversation, host Dr. Jonathan Leicht shares his knowledge on the subject with direction from co-host Dr. Michael Bugg. Contracts lay out the terms of how the working relationship is going to go, and having been on both sides of the contract negotiations himself, Dr. Leicht provides important insights on what employers, and employees alike, should be aware of when working out the details of contracts including: Why you want to have contracts crystal clear at the beginning of the working relationships Contract flexibility over time - if you're adding value, your employer is going to see value in keeping you on board Why if you don't ask, the answer is often no! Expected pay rates for new grads coming out of school based on current industry standards What comes first as an employee: selling your value upfront, or showing your value then negotiating later? Understanding what you are being paid on (this depends on the clinic) Understanding benefits, vacation time, and continuing education funds The different payment models for Veterinarians Why you should seek legal counsel on all contracts you are involved in (and always read the fine print!) Providing proper notice as a professional Contracts are always a conversation, so be sure to put everything on the table and talk about it.  Working through contracts may not always the most comfortable or enjoyable thing to do, but with a better understanding of the process and the components involved, we trust this episode will help you to better navigate your next contract talks.
