Read the Book: Peter Boghossian: 'A Manual for Creating Atheists' http://tinyurl.com/SE-PB-AMFCA Playlist of Austin: http://tinyurl.com/PL-AM-SE-AUSTIN Although I was heading back home after conducting three hours of interviews, I agreed to meet with Austin's friend Will, who is also apparently associated in some way with Christian evangelism (the brief exchange with Austin that precipitated the talk with Will is included at the end of this video). Will places himself around the 99 percent mark on the confidence in his belief that Jesus exists. After some questioning, it became apparent that Will's high degree of confidence would be lowered drastically if he was unable to employ special, or dramatic, faith. Regarding the testability of faith, I felt that we were talking past each other until I introduced to shopping list example (the same example used on my second talk with Austin). It's not the perfect metaphor, but it seemed to clarify things. These days I prefer not to use the word "falsifiable" (because it is commonly confused as saying their belief is not true), but since Will brings it up, I used it here. Read the Book: Peter Boghossian: 'A Manual for Creating Atheists' http://tinyurl.com/SE-PB-AMFCA Playlist of Austin: http://tinyurl.com/PL-AM-SE-AUSTIN Austin is a minister with The Navigators Ministries and works to introduce college-aged students to Christianity. This was my second talk with Austin, arranged over emails which he initiated. In this conversation, it becomes apparent that Austin no longer appears to view faith as a reliable epistemology. Evidence now seems to be more important for Austin in order to maintain his God belief at the 100 percent level of confidence, which wasn't apparent during our first chat. Austin around the 26-minute mark begins question me about my lack of a belief in a God and my motivation for talking with believers. Read the Book: Peter Boghossian: 'A Manual for Creating Atheists' http://tinyurl.com/SE-PB-AMFCA Sarah and Kyle base their God belief on how they were raised (60%) and their experiences (40%), but when it comes down to it, faith is required to be 100 percent certain. In this long exchange, we talk about the reliability of faith, and if it was found to be inconsistent, discuss how that discovery might impact the confidence of their God belief going forward. In the bonus footage, I was surprised to hear Sarah say that I probably could NOT use faith to conclude that a sports team would win the next hundred games. I was expecting her to say that faith WOULD be reliable, which is why I asked for clarification. Perhaps the talk did help them better understand that faith was not as reliable as they had previously thought before our talk. Music provided by Chet Hovatter.
