How to Beat IBS, Bloating, Gas, Constipation and Other Gut Issues

Are you struggling with any digestive issues that could be affecting your hormones and overall health? Former opera singer turned nutritionist and gut expert Alyssa Labrecque is on the show to talk about beating IBS and other gut issues, and how you can optimize your gut health. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode108 Topics Discussed in this Episode:Why gut health is importantWhy you might be experiencing digestive issues and when do you need to start worrying about themWhat gut maintenance looks likeWhy maintaining your minerals is importantHow the gut is connected to your hormones and hormonal imbalancesThe symptoms of SIBO and how you might get itThe Low FODMAP DietWhat to look for when purchasing probiotics Key Takeaways:You should be pooping two to three times per day.You should be pooping in quantity from your elbow to your wrist every single day.You can carry up to 20 pounds of poop in your colon, and if you’re not eliminating all that poop, that’s going to affect not only your gut but also your hormone health.Maintenance of your gut has to happen, otherwise, gut issues will start to snowball and affect other bodily systems. When it comes to gut issues, mineral deficiencies can have a big role in the symptoms that you’re experiencing.Hormonal imbalances are a symptom and we need to understand what’s causing them to happen in the first place. Otherwise, we’re just managing the symptom and we’re not preventing or reversing a health issue or regaining quality of life.If there’s a hormone imbalance going on, there’s usually a bacterial imbalance.Action Steps:Make sure to maintain your good bacteria, your enzymes, and the integrity of your gut, i.e. preventing leaky gut from occurring.Get your mineral levels tested and see what minerals you need. Alyssa said:“It’s incredible to see what some of our daily habits or how some of our daily habits might be impacting us.”“Supplementing is important but also understanding how can I ensure that I’m absorbing these nutrients that I’m depleted in.” Thanks for listening! Important Announcements: Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. The Benefits of Red Light Therapy for Your Hormones, Skin, Health and Recovery

What is red light therapy? How does it benefit your hormones and your health overall? Wes Pfiffner is on the show to tell us more about it.You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode107 Topics Discussed in this Episode:Red light therapy and its benefitsHow Joovv started Photobiomodulation and how it worksResearch on red light therapyThe light imbalance and how it affects the bodyHow to use a Joovv device Key Takeaways:Photobiomodulation is using specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate the mitochondria to produce energy.Different wavelengths of light do different things to the body. Ultraviolet light, for example, stimulates vitamin D production in humans, and red light was found to be rejuvenating to the skin. Some of the benefits of red light therapy includeBenefits to the skinRelieves joint painReduces inflammationEnhanced muscle recoveryEnhanced athletic performanceBenefits to the hormonesBenefits to the microbiomeHair regrowthCognitive benefitsInflammation reduction is probably the biggest benefit of red and near-infrared exposure that’s been documented to date.Inflammation is the root cause of almost every chronic disease in the body. Action Steps:Get adequate exposure to sunlight.Consider getting red light therapy. When getting red light therapy, make sure there’s clinically proven wavelengths, that the coverage area is that, and that the intensity is there. Wes said:“It’s really amazing how giving your body exposure to these wavelengths of red and near-infrared has a systemic effect across the whole body in such a positive way. It’s almost kind of like a multivitamin.”“Not all red light is created equal. Even though they can have the same wavelengths and clinically proven wavelengths, the intensity needs to be there.” Thanks for listening!Important Announcements: Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. Hormones, Menopause and the Keto-Green Way

What does it mean to go keto? How will it affect our hormones and our menopause? Join my conversation with menopause and sexual health expert Dr. Anna Cabeca as we talk about taking care of our bodies and our hormones as we age, and why the keto-green way is great for supporting hormonal health. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode106.Topics Discussed in this Episode:The keto-green way and why it’s incredible for supporting your hormones, energy, brain health, and weight lossWhat dirty keto meansWhy keto is essential for women over 40What it means to get into ketosisHow to avoid the keto fluThe benefits of intermittent fasting and the right way to do it Key Takeaways:There are many challenges that we face as women when we hit 40 and beyond, and one of these is metabolism. The keto-green plan is about the smallest changes we can make that give us the fastest, longest-lasting results. It takes more than hormones to fix our hormones. Our urine pH is an important marker for our health, just like our blood pressure, our pulse, our temperature, and our weight. It tells us a lot about what’s going on with our body and our environment.Straight keto diets without fiber in them have been shown to decrease the health of the gut.Getting into ketosis helps with insulin sensitivity. The use of glucose for fuel in the brain is an estrogen-dependent process. So when our estrogen and progesterone levels decline, we see this deficiency in the brain’s ability to use glucose for fuel. Action Steps:Check your urine pH to make sure it’s alkaline.Get into keto the keto-green way. Anna said:“Getting into ketosis the healthy way and getting alkaline at the same time is just a phenomenal experience, and that is why I’ve been sharing this and sharing my keto-green way with everyone I can because it really does transform our life.”“It is absolutely within your control to optimize your health and to gain resilience and revitalize your body and be in optimal health. It is our birthright… We can optimize our health for the long haul.” Thanks for listening! Important Announcements: Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. Hyperhydration - Why You Need to Drink More Water

Why is it important to drink more water? It’s one of those things that we often overlook. Naturopathic doctor Andrea Maxim is on the show to talk to us about how incredibly important it is and how hyperhydration benefits our hormones among other things. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode105.Topics Discussed in this Episode:Hyperhydration and why we need to drink more waterThe importance of hydration for detoxificationHow to hyper hydrate successfullyReigniting your thirst signalWater quality and water sourcingEssential minerals that are important for hydration Key Takeaways:Most of the symptoms and complaints or issues that you have with your body can be resolved or at least improved by hyperhydration.Every single element of your body, including every single one of your cells, requires water to allow for fluid exchange.Any source of inflammation will cause your hormones to become imbalanced. When this happens, water is the first thing we should be going to.Your large intestine is controlled by how hydrated your body is. If you are dehydrated, your body will reserve all of the fluid that it has to maintain your organs, and the more likely you are to be constipated. The urine is a huge source to get rid of heavy metals and water-based toxins in the body. Hydration significantly helps with constantly flushing out the bladder.Drinking a lot of water when you wake up in the morning turns on your metabolism. It gets your lymphatic system going, it gets your bowels moving, and it gives energy to your brain, your lungs, your muscles, and your joints. The thirst signal in your body is so subtle while the hunger signal is so massive. Oftentimes, we think we’re hungry when we’re actually thirsty. Action Steps:Your brain is 80% water. If you’re suffering from brain fog, fatigue, or if your memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be, incorporate drinking more water into your lifestyle.Think of any single issue that you have with your body right now, try 10 days of hyperhydration, and see it if improves. If you’re a woman, drink 3 to 4 liters of water a day. If you’re a man, you can go for 6 to 8 liters. As soon as you wake up, find the biggest glass that you can and drink as much water out of that glass as quickly as you can.Sip on a liter of water from breakfast to lunchtime, another liter from lunchtime to dinner time, and another liter from dinner time to bedtime, so long as it doesn’t impact your ability to stay asleep. Andrea said:“I like to think of the liver like a sponge. If that liver is completely full of crap and stuff that we’ve been exposed to… we need to be filling up that sponge, wringing it out daily, and then rinse and repeat.” “Yes, there is water in wine; yes, there is water in tea and coffee, but the innate principle of those drinks are very dehydrating. We have to be drinking responsibly one for one at the very least.” Thanks for listening! Important Announcements: Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. Transitioning from Estrogen Dominance to Estrogen Absence + Women's Health over 40

What is the impact of estrogen dominance on women over 40? What happens when you transition from estrogen dominance to estrogen absence? Certified health coach Maria Claps shares her expertise and knowledge about this subject to give us an episode that’s packed with valuable information. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode103 Topics Discussed in this Episode:Estrogen dominance and how it changes in women as they ageWhat happens when your estrogen starts to drop offThe different symptoms and problems that can arise with low estrogenThe best way to make the transition from estrogen dominance to estrogen absenceBioidentical hormone replacement therapy and when you should consider itThe DUTCH testBioidentical hormones vs synthetic hormonesKey Takeaways:Estrogen dominance is when your estrogen is out of balance with your progesterone. It essentially tends to be a progesterone deficiency.Women can go from estrogen dominance to estrogen absence at some point in their 40s and they don’t always know when that shift has occurred. You need a good, robust amount of estrogen at about the 12th day of your cycle in order to ovulate, and when you ovulate, you get progesterone. When your estrogen lowers, you can experience symptoms like vaginal dryness, but flashes, and mood issues.Action Steps:Learn more about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.Cut down your carbohydrates.Exercise according to your adrenal capacity.Maria Claps:“Your sex hormones in balance will make for much easier weight loss.”“My number one tip for women that are in that menopausal transition is to stop eating so many carbohydrates… You simply do not have the metabolic bandwidth, with age, to be eating copious amounts of carbohydrates.”Thanks for listening! Important Announcements:The Metabolic Reset program is now ON SALE! Conquer Your Cramps, Banish Your Moodiness and Fix Your Period

How can you reclaim your hormone health and have a healthy period? Creator and author of Fix Your Period, Nicole Jardim, shares how to effectively address a wide variety of period problems by using evidence-based information. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode102. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Why the birth control pill is detrimental to your healthThe non-hormonal birth control optionsWhat it means to have a healthy periodWhat your period can tell you about your healthWhy ovulation is importantPeriod cramps and what an irregular cycle might meanMyths and misconceptions around your periodWhat an optimal diet looks like for supporting hormonal health and your cycle Key Takeaways:The goal of any hormonal birth control is to stop you from ovulating. However, what we fail to realize is that stopping ovulation for any length of time can be detrimental to our overall health. The birth control pill is referred to as the lifestyle drug. It’s been used not just to prevent pregnancy but to address lifestyle issues like period-related problems and even acne.A healthy menstrual cycle is 25 to 35 days long. If it’s below 25 days, it tends to mean you have too short of a luteal phase or it’s associated with heavier, longer periods and more blood clots. If it’s longer than 35 days, it’s usually associated with polycystic ovary syndrome or another condition that’s causing you to not ovulate consistently.Your period should be fluctuating by only 2 or 3 days every cycle. This means that you’re ovulating regularly each month.Ideally, your period should be somewhere between 3 and 7 days.If you spot for a day or two before your period, that’s okay, but anything longer than that could signify a lower progesterone state in many cases. If you eat something that doesn’t agree with your metabolism or your body, your blood sugar is going to go way higher than it should. Action Steps:Tune in to your body and improve your body literacy.Get off the birth control pill and make the switch to non-hormonal birth control.Know the basics of a healthy period.Track your cycle.Don’t over-complicate your diet. Get back to the basics and keep it simple. Nicole said:“Our hormones are all talking to each other all day long through the endocrine glands and the endocrine system, so if we’re just focused on one hormone, first of all, we don’t even know why that hormone is out of whack in the first place…”“We can’t out-supplement a bad diet. We can’t out-supplement a lifestyle that is not sustainable, that is not suitable for our overall health.”Thanks for listening! Important Announcements:The Metabolic Reset program is now ON SALE! Functional Diagnostic Nutrition - Hormones: Their Role in the Body, the Importance of Lab Testing and the Common Denominator From Running Over 10,000 Labs

Do you want to know more about hormone health and the importance of lab testing? Founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN) Reed Davis is here to talk about hormones and the common denominators in labs when it comes to hormone testing. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode101.Topics Discussed in this Episode:Hormone health and why hormones are important to the bodyWhat the hormones are in charge of in your bodyMetabolic chaos and the different hormonal symptoms you might be experiencingNatural things that you can implement to balance out your hormonesCellular healthHormone tests and the common denominator in lab testing Key Takeaways:Hormones are messengers and signals that float around the body. What the endocrine system does is it sends out these messengers, and wherever there’s a receptor for that hormone, you get an effect.Hormones are incredibly important when it comes to bone density. If you’re stressed out all the time, this idea of balance between good bacteria and bad bacteria goes out of whack. As far as nourishment goes, you need to eat the right combination of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. And those ratios are really critical in terms of producing energy. Whether or not to take bio-identical hormones might depend on how old you are. People who are really old generally feel much better and function better if they’re taking bio-identical hormones. The general principles of health-building involve corrective diet, rest, exercise, stress reduction, and supplementation. Action Steps:Don’t just cram down a bunch of supplements. Rather, make sure you don’t get exposed to the virus that’s going around.Build a good, strong resistance to things. This boils down to being healthy.Eat right. In other words, eat good, nutritious food. Reed said:“If you lived yourself into trouble -- you ate yourself into it, you lacked-of-sleep yourself into it, stressed yourself into it -- then you can reverse that every step of the way. You just need someone with a system to follow.”“A sense of wellbeing should go along with being well-nourished. It should nourish your brain as well.”Thanks for listening!Important Announcements:We’ve opened registration to the Metabolic Reset program. Join now! An Invite into our Home + Our House Rules

Topics Discussed in this Episode:Our house rules and how they’ve helped us live the best life and support each otherThe list of things that we wanted in our houseBeing conscious of using eco-friendly productsLiving a toxin-free lifeKey Takeaways:Choosing your mattress is very important because a lot of the mattresses out there lets off a gas and you’ll end up breathing in chemicals while you’re sleeping. It’s nice to have artwork that resonates and means something to you. When it comes to infrared saunas, you want to make sure the wood doesn’t have any glues or stains or sealers.
