Scripture Memorization and Spiritual Formation with Kieran Lenahan

Kieran Lenahan believes that so much of who we become is influenced by what we allow our minds to dwell on. He has prioritised scripture memorization as a spiritual discipline which is allowing his mind to consistently and rhythmically come back to the truth of God's Word again and again.  He shares with Mike a story of when his life was directed and a decision was clarified for him through a memorised passage from Deuteronomy and they speculate on ways in which a church community, which is memorizing the same scripture passages might greet each other, and how the preaching   (and discipleship)  ministry could be enhanced.  Kieran has developed a text-message based scripture memorization system that has served him and his community called Malachi Daily; to sign up (for free) visit  https://malachidaily.com/?via=expositor-s-collectiveKieran Lenahan is a husband, foster/adoptive dad to 2 toddlers and an entrepreneur working at the intersection of entrepreneurship and spiritual formation. He's a coach to faith driven entrepreneurs and the co-founder of Malachi Daily, a subscription service that helps Jesus followers memorize 1 passage of Scripture a week and learn its context, via text messages. When he’s not working, you can find him on the basketball court, in a body of water or spending time with his family. “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52, ESV)“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”Psalm 1:1-6Recommended Episodes: Jonathan Pennington on the benefits of scripture memorization (and the Sermon on the Mount) https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/7/12/the-preaching-style-of-jesus-with-jonathan-penningtonDave Sylvester on meditation and contemplation during his sermon preparation process:  https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2019/10/1/episode-67-the-preachers-meditation Suzy Silk in Biblical Meditation: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/7/5/seeing-christ-responsibly-in-the-old-testament-suzy-silk For information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. Leaving Behind Our Hidden Shame For His Glorious Grace - Ray Ortlund

Ray Ortlund speaks with Mike about his Sunday morning routine, that consists of prayer and “major surgery” on his sermon manuscript, as well as an explanation of what his new post as a  Canon Theologian and Catechist actually entails. The majority of the conversation is spent speaking about the power of the gospel to overcome hidden shame and lead people into the glorious freedom of the grace of Christ. Ray’s latest book “The Death of Porn : Men of Integrity Building a World of Nobility” is published by Crossway and is available everywhere.  Pornography may seem inescapable, but God can free us from its destructive power. The gospel replaces the dehumanizing lies of pornography with this surprising truth: God created us as royalty. How then can we reclaim our God-given identity to take a stand against—and ultimately starve—the predatory porn industry? At the conclusion of the interview Ray gives advice on how to reach 71 years old and not just remain faithful to Christ, but flourishing in relationship with Him and loving Him more than ever. Ray Ortlund is the President of Renewal Ministries, the Pastor to Pastors at Immanuel Church Nashville, and a Canon Theologian with the Anglican Church in North America. The first is Happy Ever After? A workbook for couples preparing for marriage (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2017). Biblically-based and solidly practical, it covers everything from money to matrimonial disagreement, from coming to terms with the past to sharing jobs in the house. The second, A Loved One Dies: help in the first few weeks (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2017), gives down-to earth advice on how to arrange the funeral service, and the many other practical matters that arise after a death. It also provides clear thoughts on the Christian understanding of death to help the bereaved discover hope where at first there is only sadness.Following his 2017 survey of the reading habits of British ministers – the first survey of its kind in the UK, he published a major 8000-word article, ‘Ministers’ Reading Habits’, Baptist Quarterly 49 (January 2018).  The full analysis together with further reflections is found on this website. He has written three books on ministerial retirement.Retirement Matters for Ministers: A report into how into how Baptist ministers experience retirement (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2018), is based on a research project and explores issues such as the transition to retirement; housing and finance; health; friendships; family; and ministry in retirement.Entering New Territory: Why are retired Baptist ministers moving to Anglican churches? (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2019) is based on a second research project and explores the underlying theological issues.Making the Most of Retirement (Bible Reading Fellowship, Abingdon 2020) was written for ministers of all denominations and is the first such book for ministers written from a distinctively British perspective. His two latest books are:Fifty Lessons in Ministry: Reflections on Fifty Years of Ministry (Darton, Longman & Todd

Preaching in the Power of the Holy Spirit with Brian Brodersen

Brian Brodersen believes that preaching is not an end in and of itself, rather, it is a means to the greater end of knowing, loving, worshipping and serving God. Biblical Preaching (preaching the way it is defined and modeled in the Bible) is God’s word, spoken by God’s servants, through God’s Spirit, in God’s power. How to Assure We are Preaching in the Power of the SpiritA disposition, a bent, a leaning. An attitude of dependence on the Holy Spirit. A constant awareness of our own weakness: “I was with you in weakness, in fear and in much trembling.” “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God.” Preach the Word! There will be many temptations along the way to move from preaching the Word to preaching something else: politics, nationalism, social justice, prosperity, personal success and happiness, and the list goes on. People will often find a biblical text from which to springboard into their pet doctrine. This is not preaching the Word and the Holy Spirit will not honor such preaching with His power. There might very well be the power of persuasion, personality, passion, articulation, perspiration etc. but it won’t be the power of the Spirit. The Spirit honors the preaching of the Word—taking the biblical text and bringing out its meaning for all to see, understand and apply.  The Process of Preparing to Preach-a. Consciousness of the supernatural element.b. Pray for the Lord’s leading on what to preach.c. Seek the Lord’s assistance even in the preparation of your message.      III.       Preaching-Take that same dependency you’ve had through the whole process into the pulpit with you.Remember that you are the mouthpiece of God to bring His word to His people. “If anyone speaks, let them speak as the oracle of God.” 1Pet 4:11Be open to going off script, don’t be afraid to go to places you hadn’t prepared to go. The Spirit will often send us off on diversions but will also get us back on the main road. Be cautiously spontaneous. You’ll find over time those spontaneous diversions are more often than not prophetic words that go straight to the heart of the hearers who then receive the Word, not as a human word, but as it is in truth the Word of God that works effectively in those who believe.  “You can have knowledge, and you can be meticulous in your preparation; but without the unction  of the Holy Spirit you will have no power, and your preaching will not be effective.” - Martyn Lloyd-Jones  “The gospel’s force lies beyond the power of the preacher. Paul preaches without shame in his delivery skills because he trusts that the Spirit of God will use the Word the apostle proclaims to shatter the hardness of the human heart in ways no stage technique or philosophical construct can rival.” - Brian ChapellFor information about our upcoming training events in Indiana Califronia visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches.
