In this workshop from 2017 Pete, Char and Mike walk through two different interpretive methods of a well known passage of scripture highlighting the difference between a man centered and gospel centered hermeneutic. As a pastor, musician and evangelist, Pete Nelson’s worldwide travels have given him a unique perspective on the church as well as the global need for the gospel. Pete’s previous pastoral experience includes: Senior pastor at Calvary of Albuquerque, founding pastor of White Fields Community Church in Longmont, Colorado, and teaching pastor at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. Pete recently planted One Love Church in Sydney, Australia and is now currently planting One Love Church in Thousand Oaks, CA. Char is the lead pastor of Refuge Christian Fellowship, a small church in Santa Rosa, CA. Char has been in Christian ministry for 18 years and has spent the last 13 years as lead Pastor of RCF. He has been married to his wife, Grace, for 13 years and they have three lovely children, Judah, Hudson and Evelyn. Char is passionate about calling the Church to live as the people of God. Giving our allegiance to Jesus alone, following Jesus’ teaching and overall way of life as as our model for life and godliness. Char enjoys all things bible and theology, reading, music, good food and drink and adventures with his family. Mike Neglia is the lead pastor at Calvary Cork located in Cork, Ireland. After graduating Bible college in Siegen, Germany in the summer of 2002, he served at Calvary Cork as a full-time missionary youth outreach coordinator/assistant for two years before taking over as lead pastor. In 2005 Mike and his wife Rachel relaunched Calvary Cork from a small core group meeting in their living room. Since then the church has grown in health and vitality, serving as a spiritual home to many university students, families and more. Mike also channels his passion for Christ centered expository preaching by serving on the steering committee of Expositors Collective and hosting their weekly podcast. He and Rachel have three children, Eoin, Rosie and Finn. Dr. Ian Clary is Assistant Professor of Historical Theology at Colorado Christian University, he is a native of Canada and lived for the past half of his life in Toronto, Ontario, where he served as a minister in a Baptist church there. Dr. Clary's doctoral work looked at issues dealing with the Christian interpretation of history with a particular focus on early-modern British evangelicalism. His master's work looked at the reception history of patristics into the post-Reformation period with a focus on Christology. He is a fellow of the Andrew Fuller Center for Baptist Studies; the Center for Baptist Renewal; the Center for Ancient Christian Studies; and is a board member with the Davenant Institute. Ray Ortlund speaks with Mike about the distinction between educational Bible teaching and heart stirring, encouraging true preaching. He believes that the goal of preaching is new life, liberation and freedom, not bondage, heaviness and law. And as the wonderful gospel of Jesus is placarded in a church, a culture of safety, warmth and welcome is created. Ray graduated from Wheaton College as a Bachelor of Arts, from Dallas Theological Seminary as a Master of Theology, from The University of California at Berkeley as a Master of Arts, and from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, as a Doctor of Philosophy.  Pastor Ortlund was ordained into the Christian ministry by Lake Avenue Congregational Church, Pasadena, California, in 1975.  He taught Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois, from 1989 to 1998.  His primary ministry, for 28 years, has been as a pastor in California, Oregon, Georgia and Tennessee. In addition to numerous essays and articles, Ray has published eight books.  His latest, Marriage and the Mystery of the Gospel, was named “2017 Christian Book of the Year” in the category Bible Study.  He also served as an Old Testament translator for The New Living Translation and The English Standard Version of the Bible.  He contributed the introduction and study notes to the book of Isaiah in The ESV Study Bible. Ray is also the President of Renewal Ministries and serves on the Council of The Gospel Coalition.
