Pastoral Preaching - Dr. Phil Newton

Dr. Phil Newton has been preaching the word for over 50 years beginning on a Wednesday night in 1970 with a sermon on suffering out of 1 Peter chapter 4. Phil recalls feeling a strong calling to the ministry as a teenager and has been faithful to pursue God’s calling. In his early years, Phil was not always exposed to or under expositional leadership and spent many years figuring things out on his own. He’s thankful for God’s faithfulness and grace despite Phil’s many shortcomings as a young christian. Phil had the fortune of having mentors and teachers during his early 20s who had a massive impact upon his life and ministry.Phil planted and has served as the senior pastor of South Woods Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, since 1987. He has also authored several books and is a contributor for The Gospel Coalition, Founders Ministry, and the 9marks eJournal. Phil is also an adjunct professor at Southeastern Baptist Theological SeminaryPhil puts a huge emphasis on what he calls pastoral preaching and the need to go beyond simply sharing scripture. He revels in the opportunity to show the congregation how the word of God can apply to every aspect of their lives. As a pastor, Phil looks to take every story out of the bible and show how it connects to the redemption of the Gospel and how that impacts their lives. After preaching for over 50 years, Phil continues to try and improve each and every sermon he gives. In order to reach those goals, he emphasises the need to be fervent and faithful in his devotions, reading authors who are both old (400 years old) and new, and continuing self evaluation.Visit our social media for a chance to win a copy of 40 Questions About Pastoral MinistryFurther resources:Southwoods Baptist Church: https://southwoodsbc.org/Founders Ministry: https://founders.org/author/phil-newton/Gospel Coalition: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/profile/phil-a-newton/9marks eJournal: https://www.9marks.org/by-author/phil-newton/Twitter: https://twitter.com/philnewton901Written Works: https://www.amazon.com/-/e/B001K8U0QUBooks Mentioned:40 Questions About Pastoral Ministry: https://www.amazon.com/40-Questions-About-Pastoral-Ministry/dp/0825446562On Pastoring: https://www.amazon.com/Pastoring-Living-Leading-Ministering-Pastor/dp/0802414605Recommended Episodes: Russell Moore: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2021/5/25/going-around-those-watchful-dragons-russel-more Shane Angland: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/7/7/the-problem-and-the-promise-of-preaching-shane-angland Jon Tyson: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/6/16/episode-112-theology-that-cannont-be-dismissed-and-power-that-cannot-be-denied

God Calls You To Intimacy, Not Activity - Kike Torres

Kike has served as lead pastor of Horizonte Querétaro since 2011. He is the founder of the Calvary Chapel School of Ministry in México and the Biblical Counseling Center at Querétaro. Kike also writes for the Gospel Coalition and is the founder and president of the Biblical Counseling Coalition in Mexico which hosts the annual National Biblical Counseling Conference, as well as regional biblical counseling conferences. He is currently pursuing ACBC certification and a MACS at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is married to Paulina and they have one son.Kike shares his passion for mental, physical, and spiritual health. Coming out of a professional career in sales, Kike has seen what the endless pursuit of “results” has done to friends and colleagues. As a pastor, he has seen the same pursuit take out pastors of churches large and small. He details how important it is for a pastor to seek rest and balance or risk destroying their marriage or living unworthy of their pastoral calling. Kike recalls his first sermon that was given in the heat of the moment and was a smattering of multiple bible stories. He doesn’t know if what he said made sense but he knows God will deliver the message. Kike learned early on that it was so important to focus more on living a life full of intimacy with God rather that focus on output or activities. This was such a wonderful conversation and there will likely be a part two. Further resources: Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkwWi_HtIQMBU8ySbeBlD_gTwitter: https://twitter.com/kikepastorresInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/pastorkiketorres/Church Website: https://www.cristoesmejor.com/Una Nueva Vida Book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085XNS33H/Biblical Counseling Coalition in Mexico: https://www.consejero.org/National Biblical Counseling Conference: https://www.contuconsejo.com/Books recommended by Pastor Kike:The Rest of God: https://www.amazon.com/Rest-God-Mark-Buchanan/dp/0849918707The End of Mental Illness: https://www.amazon.com/End-Mental-Illness-Neuroscience-Transforming/dp/1496438159Soul Keeping: https://www.amazon.com/Soul-Keeping-Caring-Most-Important/dp/0310275962/Replenish: https://www.amazon.com/Replenish-Leading-Healthy-Lance-Witt/dp/0801013542Leading on Empty: https://www.amazon.com/Leading-Empty-Refilling-Renewing-Passion/dp/0764207598Lead: https://www.amazon.com/Lead-Gospel-Principles-Leadership-Church/dp/1433567636Dangerous Calling: https://www.amazon.com/Dangerous-Calling-Confronting-Challenges-Pastoral/dp/1433535823/

Every Hero Suffers - Wesley Towne

Wesley has directed a Bible College, lectured in theology, hermeneutics, NT Greek, and many other subjects. He is also the teaching pastor at Bayside Church’s Davis campus. During his career as a pastor, Wesley has also produced a podcast and authored several pieces on the subjects of mental health and suffering.  Wesley began teaching on his high school campus after inviting fellow students to a bible study, and since it was his idea, he was elected to teach. That first lesson was about suffering from the book of Acts. It wasn’t his initial plan to be a teacher or pastor, but a few weeks after that first bible study, Wesley heard God calling him to teach. It was a pivotal moment in life and changed the course of his future.  God has taken Wesley and his family through various trials over the years. Welsey now focuses on speaking, teaching, and writing about mental health and suffering. It’s so important that pastors understand who they are, where their struggles are, and when they need a break. Failing to maintain your mental health is failing your congregation. Wesley takes us through his journey and how God has helped him to endure and flourish.  An active runner, Wesley tries to run 5-6 days a week on his treadmill while reading the bible (wow).  Further resources: Better Days Podcast: https://www.betterdaysfmly.co/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/WesleyTowne Website: https://www.wesleytowne.com/ Leading on Empty: https://www.amazon.com/Leading-Empty-Refilling-Renewing-Passion/dp/0764207598

Preach The Word, Don’t Work The Crowd - Chris Thomas

Chris Thomas is the Teaching Pastor of Raymond Terrace Community Church in the Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. Chris grew up in a Christian home and remembers having the opportunity to preach at his home church at a very young age. While he appreciates the support he received, Chris does think it’s important to be intentional about learning how to preach. At the age of 19, Chris was living in the “bush” or remote outback of northern Australia. During this time he met his wife and really began honing his craft as a young preacher. He reflects on a journey through very informal training and is thankful for God’s grace along the way. Christ also shares how his journey as a father has greatly impacted his preaching style and understanding of the Gospel. Chris considers himself “A fortunate husband, a father of three and dad to five; I’m an advocate of foster care as an implication of the gospel.” He loves spending time outdoors and can often be found around a campfire, barefoot with coffee in hand.Additional Episodes:Jon Tyson:https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/6/16/episode-112-theology-that-cannont-be-dismissed-and-power-that-cannot-be-deniedRev Bruce Clarke on the emotional weight of Expository Preaching:https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2019/12/29/episode-081-the-emotional-weight-of-expository-preachingSam Garrard on the Church Calendar:https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/6/9/liturgy-amp-the-church-calendar Finding Your Own Voice - Brian Brodersen:https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2019/12/2/episode-77-finding-your-own-voiceFinding Your Own Voice - Pete Nelson:https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2019/7/9/episode-55-finding-your-own-voiceThe Expositors Collective podcast is part of the GoodLion podcast network, for more thought provoking Christian podcasts visit https://goodlion.io

How NOT to Use Commentaries - Nijay Gupta

Preaching is far more than transferring information from from the mind of the speaker to the ears of the congregation. Dr Nijay Gupta believes that preaching is inviting Christ to dwell in the people of God and to do His ministry in their midst. In this conversation, Mike and Nijay speak about the right and wrong ways to use commentaries, the irreplaceable value of meditation and the priority of inductive Bible study. There is an important segment of the conversation which focuses on the “triangulating” role that commentaries, articles and sermons from the diverse, ancient and broad body of Christ can play in helping contemporary Christians to understand sacred scripture. Finally, the advantage of collaboration and peer review in the life of a preacher was discussed, and Dr Gupta learned that it might not be as rare as he previously suspected! Dr. Nijay K. Gupta is a public theologian and Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. He writes widely on the New Testament and Christian formation. His most recent books are Paul and the Language of Faith (Eerdmans), A Beginner's Guide to New Testament Studies (Baker Academic), and Reading Philippians (Cascade). He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin for Biblical Research, Co-Editor of The Bible in God’s World series with Scot McKnight, and as a member of the Editorial Board of both Ex Auditu and and of the Biblical Interpretation Series.
