Dr. Phil Newton has been preaching the word for over 50 years beginning on a Wednesday night in 1970 with a sermon on suffering out of 1 Peter chapter 4. Phil recalls feeling a strong calling to the ministry as a teenager and has been faithful to pursue God’s calling. In his early years, Phil was not always exposed to or under expositional leadership and spent many years figuring things out on his own. He’s thankful for God’s faithfulness and grace despite Phil’s many shortcomings as a young christian. Phil had the fortune of having mentors and teachers during his early 20s who had a massive impact upon his life and ministry.Phil planted and has served as the senior pastor of South Woods Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, since 1987. He has also authored several books and is a contributor for The Gospel Coalition, Founders Ministry, and the 9marks eJournal. Phil is also an adjunct professor at Southeastern Baptist Theological SeminaryPhil puts a huge emphasis on what he calls pastoral preaching and the need to go beyond simply sharing scripture. He revels in the opportunity to show the congregation how the word of God can apply to every aspect of their lives. As a pastor, Phil looks to take every story out of the bible and show how it connects to the redemption of the Gospel and how that impacts their lives.After preaching for over 50 years, Phil continues to try and improve each and every sermon he gives. Kike has served as lead pastor of Horizonte Querétaro since 2011. He is the founder of the Calvary Chapel School of Ministry in México and the Biblical Counseling Center at Querétaro. Kike also writes for the Gospel Coalition and is the founder and president of the Biblical Counseling Coalition in Mexico which hosts the annual National Biblical Counseling Conference, as well as regional biblical counseling conferences. He is currently pursuing ACBC certification and a MACS at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is married to Paulina and they have one son.Kike shares his passion for mental, physical, and spiritual health. Coming out of a professional career in sales, Kike has seen what the endless pursuit of “results” has done to friends and colleagues. As a pastor, he has seen the same pursuit take out pastors of churches large and small. He details how important it is for a pastor to seek rest and balance or risk destroying their marriage or living unworthy of their pastoral calling. Kike recalls his first sermon that was given in the heat of the moment and was a smattering of multiple bible stories. He doesn’t know if what he said made sense but he knows God will deliver the message. Kike learned early on that it was so important to focus more on living a life full of intimacy with God rather that focus on output or activities. Wesley has directed a Bible College, lectured in theology, hermeneutics, NT Greek, and many other subjects. He is also the teaching pastor at Bayside Church’s Davis campus. During his career as a pastor, Wesley has also produced a podcast and authored several pieces on the subjects of mental health and suffering.  Wesley began teaching on his high school campus after inviting fellow students to a bible study, and since it was his idea, he was elected to teach. That first lesson was about suffering from the book of Acts. It wasn’t his initial plan to be a teacher or pastor, but a few weeks after that first bible study, Wesley heard God calling him to teach. It was a pivotal moment in life and changed the course of his future.  God has taken Wesley and his family through various trials over the years. Welsey now focuses on speaking, teaching, and writing about mental health and suffering. It’s so important that pastors understand who they are, where their struggles are, and when they need a break. Failing to maintain your mental health is failing your congregation. Chris Thomas is the Teaching Pastor of Raymond Terrace Community Church in the Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. Chris grew up in a Christian home and remembers having the opportunity to preach at his home church at a very young age. While he appreciates the support he received, Chris does think it’s important to be intentional about learning how to preach. At the age of 19, Chris was living in the “bush” or remote outback of northern Australia. During this time he met his wife and really began honing his craft as a young preacher. He reflects on a journey through very informal training and is thankful for God’s grace along the way. John Chandler has a history in Bible teaching and podcasting. He has served as a youth minister, lead pastor of a church plant, and web developer. John describes the differences between teaching as a guest or part of a rotation and being the lead teacher of a congregation. He emphasizes the need for a sermon to act as a call to action for the hearer. He recalls one of his first sermons as a seminary student and relating the armor of God to Santa Claus. John also gives some insight into his process for preparing sermons and how it’s an active part of his everyday life.John has also worked as an independent web developer and has many other projects in the works. He also produced a podcast called the Sermonsmith podcast that helped inspire the Expositors Podcast.
