Fearing God More Than Fearing People - Jeffrey Arthurs
"We fear men so much because we fear God so little. One fear cures the other." This quotation from Puritan preacher William Gurnall drastically impacted Jeffrey Arthurs when he heard it quoted by one of his students. In this encouraging conversation with Mike, Dr Arthurs speaks candidly about overcoming the fear of man, the power of specificity and the importance of knowing the cultural context both of the passage being preached, and the lives of the congregation. They also speak about Haddon Robinson's Subject/Complement distinction, feedforward vs feedback, the hidden hope in lament, and variety in literary genres and their impact on our preaching styles and so much more! 🚨 !!! The Right And Wrong Way To Tell Stories In Your Sermons - Adam Copenhaver
There are right and wrong ways to include personal stories and anecdotes in our sermons. Dr Adam Copenhaver helps us to think through this minefield and shows us some of the right ways to talk about ourselves, and the stories that we SHOULD include. When preaching to congregations that are made up of varying levels of education stories become even more important for turning abstract concepts into concrete realities. Adam Copenhaver has experience both as a Bible scholar and as a local church pastor. He studied first at Grace College and Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, IN, earning a BA in Biblical studies (2001) and an MDiv in Pastoral Ministries (2003). After serving for a few years as a local church pastor, Adam pursued further theological training. He studied first at Westminster Theological Seminary, where he earned a ThM degree in Old Testament (2009). His studies at Westminster focused especially on hermeneutics (Biblical interpretation) and he did research on how the book of Psalms is used in the New Testament. Adam then shifted to New Testament and completed a PhD at the University of Aberdeen, Highland Theological College (2012).Adam is currently the pastor of the Grace Church of Mabton in Mabton, WA, where his ministry focuses especially on the teaching and preaching of God’s Word. As a pastor, he focuses especially on God’s saving work in Christ and strives to make Christ the center of the church’s ministry and practice. His publications include Reconstructing the Background of Paul's Rhetoric in the Letter to the Colossians (T&T Clark, 2018); What Is Christian Marriage: Notes for Developing a Biblical Theology of Marriage and Sexual Ethics (2016); and Translating Colossians Clause-by-Clause: An Exegetical Guide (2016). He has recently published a commentary on Colossians and Philemon for Kregel Publishers. Adam is proudly married to Susie, his wife of 20 years, and he has two boys, Simon and Calvin, as well as occasional foster children. Together, they enjoy reading, playing pinochle, hiking, and camping. You can listen to Adam's sermons here: https://open.spotify.com/show/6MYdr4MdY7iWH2HN1VmPpM?si=c4eb540d05984fd9Learn more about Leadership Collective here: https://calvarychapel.com/posts/cgn-leadership-collective-podcast-and-new-leadership-care-coaching-initiativeSubscribe to their podcast here: https://churchleadershipcollective.com/ https://open.spotify.com/show/3LaEdkwhcTrElIaEFjunoZRecommended Episodes:David Downs - Paper Time and People Time: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/8/22/people-time-paper-time-david-downsEric Cartier - The Power of Connection: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/9/1/the-power-of-connection-eric-cartierJason Cruise - Getting Application Right: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/10/27/getting-application-right-dr-jason-cruiseRafael Manzanares - The Power and Danger of Personal Illustrations: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/2/24/zj3d28nijrb4moagh63yp2znkqhijs- Join our private Facebook group to continue the conversation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ExpositorsCollectiveThe Expositors Collective podcast is part of the GoodLion podcast network, for more thought provoking Christian podcasts visit https://goodlion.io

What Have You Been Talking About? - Tim Chaddick
In the opening session of our Costa Mesa training event, Tim Chaddick laid out 5 of the values that matter to expository preachers:Expository Preaching Displays Scripture’s Inspiration (2 Timothy 3:16-17)Expository Preaching Sets the Agenda (Acts 20:27)Expository Preaching Reveals True Authority (1 Thessalonians 2:13)Expository Preaching Promotes Biblical Literacy (1 Timothy 4:13)Expository Preaching Leads to Christ (Luke 24:37)Tim was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area of California. Growing up, Christian faith was the last thing on his mind as he pursued pleasure, relationships, and a musical career as the source of his identity. It wasn't until he heard and received the gospel of Jesus Christ that the illusion of a self-centered life was shattered. In its place, Tim experienced forgiveness and newness of life with God. Even though he then enrolled in a Bible college, he had no intention of pursuing pastoral ministry until a fresh reading of Romans 10 ("How shall they hear without a preacher?") opened his eyes to God's calling on his life. Shortly after that, he married Lindsey and moved forward in vocational ministry, with a passion for urban church planting growing in his heart. In 2004, Tim and Lindsey believed that God had called them to Los Angeles to plant a church. So they moved to Hollywood, and as they started meeting with others in small prayer gatherings, God began to change lives and build a church for His glory. Since then, Reality LA has become a thriving church in Hollywood, seeking the city's renewal through the gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastor Tim's first two books, Better: How Jesus Satisfies the Search for Meaning and The Truth About Lies, were projects which came from lessons learned while living and pastoring at Reality LA. Looking back, it's clear that it has been nothing, but the sheer grace of God at work as the good news of Jesus has changed lives in Los Angeles. Ten years later, the Chaddick's believe that God has called them again — this time to London. The Chaddick’s connection to London started back in the early 2000s through involvement with various UK churches and continued through a relationship with various leaders, pastors, and friends. In 2015, a prayerful process amongst the Reality church-planting pastors culminated in a shared call to send Pastor Tim and his family to start a church in London as part of the Reality family of churches. Over the next five years, Reality Church London was planted and established as a city-center church focused on the gospel and reflecting the diversity of the city. And in 2020, Tim and his family sensed a change of season was on the horizon, which led them to prayerfully make a move back to California and take up a role amongst the leadership team at Reality Ventura.Tim currently serves as the Pastor for Preaching at Reality Ventura and is active in speaking at churches, conferences and helping leaders start and maintain new churches and fulfill their call to be effective on mission in their cities. He and his wife live in Ventura County with their three daughters Lily, Phoebe, and Paige. In all their endeavors, the Chaddick’s desire to be a faithful presence within their local community as they seek to serve Christ and the people of their city. Framing Your Message & Managing Your Week - Jon geraci
Jon Geraci is the lead Pastor of Calvary South Denver.Jon was born in Upland, California and grew up in a Christian home. It wasn’t until his freshman year in High school that the Lord got a hold of his life. It was then that he surrendered everything to Jesus.“I was in Jr. High when I started my rebellion. I didn’t care that I was deliberately disobeying my parents or sinning against the Lord, I just wanted to be a slave to my flesh. To me, Christianity was a joke. I remember one night I was in my parents basement crying out in fear for my life. It was as if the Lord was showing me my future and all I saw was death. God spoke to me so clearly that night; ‘Jon, your sin is killing you! You’re not guaranteed another day to live.’ It was then, I gave my life completely to the Lord.”Jon has been a pastors kid since his birth and graduated from Calvary Chapel Bible College in Murrieta California. He has been in full time ministry since 2004 serving in various ministries from; youth ministry, young adults, mission, has helped with church plants, started his own church, and has taken over Calvary South Denver. Jon is the founding pastor of Declaration Church that started in September of 2012 in Mount Pleasant South Carolina and is now the Lead Pastor of Calvary South Denver since 2020. Altar Calls - Mason Mortimer
Mike speaks with Mason Mortimer about Altar Calls where do they come from, historic and current objections, and some ideas for how to invite people to respond to our sermons with steps of faith or obedience in a non-manipulative manner. Mason Mortimer describes himself as missionary/preacher/pastor who is trapped inside a financial advisor’s body. He has been married for 18 years to Helena. He also has two teenage kids, Morgan and Maxwell. Mason still waits in the shadows. Dress for the occasion, waiting for God to put him into full-time vocational ministry. Until then, he rides the open frontier, looking for opportunities for God to use his narrowly-focused skill set…the ability to talk to any audience at any time about anything with passion and enthusiasm! One of Mason‘s favorite quotes is “Always be ready to preach, pray, sing, or die at a moments notice.“ This Expositors Collective podcast is an opportunity he’s been waiting for since God sat him on the shelf about 20 years ago. “You have nothing to do but to save souls. Therefore spend and be spent in this work. It is not your business to preach so many times, but to save as many souls is you possibly can. To bring as many sinners as you can to repentance and with all your power to build him up in that holiness without which they cannot see the Lord.“ - John Wesley Recommended Episodes: Preaching Evangelistic Sermons - Ian Clary : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/9/21/preaching-evangelistic-sermons-ian-clary Spurgeon the Preacher - David Guzik : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2018/9/11/episode-12-hard-work-charles-spurgeon-and-you Preaching Mercifully to those who Doubt - Dominic Done : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/1/21/preaching-mercifully-to-those-who-doubt-dominic-doneThe Expositors Collective podcast is part of the GoodLion podcast network, for more thought provoking Christian podcasts visit https://goodlion.io
