Beholding the Glory of Jesus with Heath Hardesty

In episode 250 of the podcast Heath Hardesty speaks with Mike Neglia about mirth, cultural engagement and the artistry of preaching. Heath Hardesty was born and raised in Boulder County, Colorado, and now lives in Livermore. Before pastoring, h worked as a plumber's apprentice (which might explain something of his focus on us being apprentices of Jesus). He and his wife moved to the Tri-valley in October of 2009 to join the pastoral team of VCC, and he became the lead pastor in 2015. Heath and his wife Marla have three kids: a 9-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old girl. Heath is a self-professed book nerd, so talk of Tolkien, Lewis, Dostoevsky, Eliot, O'Connor, Peterson and others are likely to happen at some point! In his opinion, theology should have some poetry to it. Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room (Preaching During Advent)

The Christmas season is upon us! This is a unique time in the calendar year when nominal Christians and occasional visitors will come to your church to sing songs and listen to a sermon. How can we leverage this opportunity for the gospel? How can a preacher, who has perhaps preached dozens of Christmas messages over the years, keep it “fresh” now?  Eight former (and upcoming) guests of the podcast were asked exactly that question and have submitted their answers. Our hope is that as you listen to these different perspectives and ideas that it will stir your heart with fresh enthusiasm this upcoming December! The Pulpit and the Couch with Kike Torres

The ministry of the Word and the care of souls is certainly not limited only to the preaching event. Pastors are called not only to minister with an open Bible from the pulpit, but also with an open Bible from the counselling couch as well. Kike Torres returns for a second time to speak about the role of Biblical counselling in his church context, and also why he believes that every pastor should have a counsellor, and should be counselling others.     Kike has served as lead pastor of Horizonte Querétaro since 2011. He is the founder of the Calvary Chapel School of Ministry in México and the Biblical Counseling Center at Querétaro. Kike also writes for the Gospel Coalition and is the founder and president of the Biblical Counseling Coalition in Mexico which hosts the annual National Biblical Counseling Conference, as well as regional biblical counseling conferences. He is currently pursuing ACBC certification and a MACS at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is married to Paulina and they have one son. Kike has a passion for mental, physical, and spiritual health.Further resources: Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkwWi_HtIQMBU8ySbeBlD_gTwitter: https://twitter.com/kikepastorresInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/pastorreskike/ Church Website: https://www.cristoesmejor.com/PastorPastor Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pastorpastor-con-kike-torres/id1501868899Una Nueva Vida Book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085XNS33H/Dios en mis desiertos y tormentas Book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1400244463/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i1Biblical Counseling Coalition in Mexico: https://www.consejero.org/National Biblical Counseling Conference: https://www.contuconsejo.com/ Association of Certified Biblical Counsellors (ACBC) https://biblicalcounseling.com/ Recommended Episodes : The Preacher and Emotional Health - Ryan Huguley :  https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/10/6/the-preacher-and-emotional-health-ryan-hugleyEvery Hero Suffers - Wesley Towne : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2021/6/22/every-hero-suffers-wesley-towne Preaching Hope in Darkness - Scott Gibson + Karen Mason:  https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2021/1/12/preaching-hope-in-darkness-karen-mason-and-scott-gibsonJoin our private Facebook group to continue the conversation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ExpositorsCollectiveThe Expositors Collective podcast is part of the GoodLion podcast network, for more thought provoking Christian podcasts visit https://goodlion.io

What Does It Mean To Be "Able To Teach?" with David Mathis

The one notable distinction between Elder and Deacon virtues listened in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 is a single Greek word didaktikos, which has been translated as “Able to teach” “apt to teach”“skilful in teaching” in various English translations. What exactly does that mean? Mike Neglia speaks with David Mathis about this specific Elder qualification and the difference between reluctant occasional teaching and enthusiastic joyful habitual teaching. Paul also says, as his culminating qualification in the Titus 1 list, the pastor-elder “must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it” (Titus 1:9). That is, he must know “the trustworthy word,” and be trained in it, and genuinely “hold firm” to it. But then commences the work of teaching in its twofold sense: feeding the flock (“give instruction in sound doctrine”) and defending the flock (“rebuke those who contradict it”). And if the pastors are poor or ineffective teachers, the sheep go hungry or get eaten. - from https://www.9marks.org/article/pastors-teach/ David Mathis serves as senior teacher and executive editor at desiringGod.org, a pastor at Cities Church in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and an adjunct professor at Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis. Teach them how to listen, teach them how to read, and discuss with them what they are learning.Be willing to take risks with them.Correct when correction is necessary and encourage when encouragement is needed.Don’t attach your identity and worth to their success and failures but show them what a true understanding of your identity and worth in Christ looks like.Be thankful and present when you have them and be thankful and hopeful when God takes them to other places and other people.Join our private Facebook group to continue the conversation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ExpositorsCollectiveThe Expositors Collective podcast is part of the GoodLion podcast network, for more thought provoking Christian podcasts visit https://goodlion.io

Preaching That Creates Gospel Culture

Since our preaching builds, affirms and creates the culture of our churches, it is vitally important that we emphasize and consistently hold out not only the gospel itself, but the cultural implications thereof. In this workshop, given at the CGN International Pastors and Leaders Conference in Costa Mesa California back in June of 2022, Mike Neglia, Tim Chaddick and Nick Cady speak about the opportunities (and limitations) of the pulpit for shaping, upholding and communicating gospel culture in the lives of our churches. “As the pastor, you are the primary shaper of the church’s culture. Because you preach most frequently, your beliefs and values are far more influential in steering the culture of the church. What matters to you usually defines what matters to the church. This influence is a grave privilege”  - Deepak Reju +  Jeremy PierreNick Cady is the lead pastor of White Fields Community Church in Longmont, Colorado.Prior to moving to Longmont in 2012, Nick spent 10 years as a missionary, pastor and church planter in Hungary working with Calvary Chapel. He holds a Bachelors degree in Theology from the University of Gloucestershire (UK) and a Masters degree in Integrative Theology from London School of Theology.Nick is on the steering committee of the Expositors Collective, a growing network of pastors, leaders, and laypeople which exists to equip, encourage, and mentor the next generation of Christ-centered preachers by hosting training seminars and providing resources, including a weekly podcast. He also serves with Calvary Global Network as a Local Connector and has developed Cultivate, a program to assess, train, and deploy new church planters and missionaries. You can keep up with Nick on Twitter at @nickcady, on Instagram at @cadynick, or by subscribing to the White Fields Church podcast.Tim Chaddick is the Pastor for Preaching at Reality Ventura and Founding Pastor of Reality Church London and Reality LA. A native to California, Tim's first ten years of church-planting ministry started as the Lead Pastor of Reality LA in 2006, a thriving church in the heart of Hollywood, before planting Reality London in the UK in 2016. In 2021, Tim returned to California to take up the Pastor for Preaching role at Reality Ventura.Recommended episodes:Ray Ortlund - How Gospel Preaching Creates Gospel Culture: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/8/18/how-gospel-preaching-creates-gospel-culture-ray-ortlund Justin Holcomb - Preaching God’s Grace to the Disgraced : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/6/21/preaching-gods-grace-to-the-disgraced-justin-holcombTim Chaddick - What Have You Been Talking About? : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/4/19/what-have-you-been-talking-about-tim-chaddick  Join our private Facebook group to continue the conversation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ExpositorsCollectiveThe Expositors Collective podcast is part of the GoodLion podcast network, for more thought provoking Christian podcasts visit https://goodlion.io

The Power of Story with Robert Fergusson - Rebroadcast

In this engaging and thought-provoking conversation Nick Cady  and Mike Neglia  speak with Robert Fergusson about the value of storytelling in preaching. Our postmodern world cherishes stories of individuals yet is skeptical of an overarching metanarrative - Robert helps us to use the former to communicate the latter. They also speak about what it means to follow the example of Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:5 “For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.” This was recorded in December 2020 and originally broadcast in February of 2021Robert's book "Are you getting this?" is available at Hillsong's website [ https://www.hillsongstore.com/aygt ] or anywhere books are sold. You can follow Robert on Instagram for weekly teaching tips -  https://www.instagram.com/robertfergussonteaching/?hl=en Robert Fergusson has been part of the teaching team at Hillsong Church for the last thirty years. He is English by birth, Australian by choice and European by taste. He has seven growing grandchildren, three married children and one patient wife. He is a biologist by training, but dislikes the colour green. He is a teacher by calling, but hates marking. He loves travelling, reading, photography and coffee. For over forty years he has taught people how to live in order to please God. He and his wife currently live in the parrot-filled suburbs of Sydney.Recommended Episodes: How to not be boring - Nick Cady: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2019/1/1/episode-28-how-to-not-be-boring I'll be your story Sherpa - Scott Erickson : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2021/5/11/ill-be-your-story-sherpa-scott-erickson  Finding Your Own Voice - Brian Brodersen :  https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2019/12/2/episode-77-finding-your-own-voiceJoin our private Facebook group to continue the conversation: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ExpositorsCollectiveThe Expositors Collective podcast is part of the GoodLion podcast network, for more thought provoking Christian podcasts visit https://goodlion.io
