On The Seventh Day of Culture... June 20th, 1975: JAWS Eats The Girls

This episode, which is really a prayer, is a time capsule recorded just hours before the release of Tayla Swiff's evermore. It is also going to go down in history as one of the most thought-provoking discussions of all podcast time. The central question? Is it weirder that Bowen hasn't seen Jaws (despite having once played him/her on stage) or that Matt hasn't seen The Sound of Music (despite being Matt)? What was intended as a discussion on the cultural impact of Jaws eating, nay, devouring the girls quickly turns into an exploration on pop culture's impact relative to location and broader cultural exposure. Also, the famous score of the blockbuster film as a "sexual call to the dance floor", how the hoopla around the movie took sharks to the top of the charts, and the reveal that neither of the boys have seen The Godfather. All this, Disney's recent announcements, the incumbent "stan" vs. the challenger "simp", and a brief, tasteful moment of appreciation for Carrie Underwood. You're gonna need a bigger...hug :) Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On the Sixth Day of Culture... May 2nd, 1952: Birth of Christine Baranski

There was Before the birth of Christine Baranski, and there was After the birth of Christine Baranski. And, God? Las Culturistas is so happy we all live in the After time. The two hosts of Las Cultch, Bowen and Matt, discuss Baranski's impact on both regular and Christmas culture, and run through her seminal work as Mary Sunshine, Martha May Whovier, and as whoever she plays in Mamma Mia! This day, Day 6 of the 12 Days of Culture, is one that will go down in history as the day a true consummate professional thespian was given to the world, and we are damn grateful. Name another legend! Also, isn't it fucked up that the person who is gonna do your autopsy one day is gonna see more of your body than you ever will? Have you been spicing up your quarantine with candles and scents? How's your skin? All this, and Matt and Bow find out where they stand in the vaccine line, on this celebratory and revelatory (hello!) episode of Las Culturistas. Listen....now! Augh! On The Fifth Day of Culture... July 2nd, 2020: Ghislaine Maxwell, You're Under Arrest!

Las Culturistas becomes a true crime podcast for one episode only as Matt and Bowen finally truly take down the notorious and stupid-yet-British criminal who should rot in Hell named Ghislaine Maxwell on the 5th episode of the 12 Days of Culture series. Finally, a pair of podcasters do a close read on the name "Ghislaine". Every letter is scrutinized as the two girls who host as Cultch peel back the many layers that is this bad and ultimately evil first name. Along the way, Matt and Bow imagine what Vanna White's inner monologue must be like, and the two create a play as a result. Also, do aliens exist? If you're doing anything other than listening to this podcast episode today? "Can it, Missy." Alright, see ya tomorrow! On The Fourth Day of Culture... March 25th, 2003 - Celine Dion Makes Vegas A Thing

Celine Dion. The name alone conjures certain imagery. A lightning bolt shooting out of a finger during a performance of "It's All Coming Back To Me Now". A huge ship sinking. A mom crying. On the Fourth Day of the 12 Days of Culture, Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang exalt the one and only Celine and share Vegas memories, lift up the bops we've come to know ("That's The Way It Is" really does come out of nowhere sometimes and slay you! HO!), and talk about the underground Celine smashes ("Imperfections"? Heard of it?!) while navigating a space where their own Hot Engineer Doug, a straight man, claims to have been unaware of Celine's importance during the time he worked with her on her huge album Let's Talk About Love in the 90's. It's a lot to get through and says a lot about what a long way we still have to go as a human race. All this, how "goofy" and "silly" are different, Bowen reveals that he does not know who Ava Max is, and the boys resist sharing the ages of their mothers on the podcast. More like It's All Coming Back To YOU Now! 'Cause this podcast episode? Is available to listen to, darling dear. See ya tomorrow! On The Third Day of Culture... June 10th, 1752: Ben Franklin Flies The Kite, and Girl, Makes A Shocking Discovery

The 3rd Day of Culture has arrived and we are celebrating that day when Ben Franklin, whilst flying a kite, discovered electricity. Chaotic good, much?! Bowen walks Matt through the fascinating timeline of Benj Frank's life, and the girls spin off based on one of his other inventions (bifocals!) into a conversation about Bowen and Matt's respective lifetime eye struggles. It gets really, really emotional as Matt accuses Bowen of being a "Tina Fey about glasses" (lying about needing them), but the two immediately reconcile. All this, the boys choose their favorite founding fathers, the "beauty myth" during the American Revolution is explored, and a brief word on how poop can sometimes get in your eye during lovemaking. Have you checked in on your girls? They doing crazy shit like flying a kite during a storm? Ever seen a straight guy's ass up close? Anyways, we'll see y'all again tomorrow! xo! On The Second Day of Culture... November 11th, 2020: Mary M. Cosby Hits The World Stage

Well, it's Day 2 of the 12 Days of Culture and Las Cultch is discussing The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City's Mary M. Cosby-- OH WAIT SORRY, we meant Mary M. Culture. That may as well be her name, Bowen declares. Her style. Her presence. Her immediate impact. Your hosts map a Barbra Streisand-esque rise to fame narrative onto Salt Lake City's Great White Hope, and discuss how she has Bethenny potential. To put it bluntly, the boys believe that she could become an international mover and shaker from a leadership perspective. All that, gift-giving, collecting vinyl, and Matt tells a detailed story about a real life experience he had watching a star-making moment. Hey, have you consumed today? How seriously did you take that consumption? Are you doing this? Just some things to think about. See you tomorr(ow)! On The First Day of Culture... August 18th, 1953: The First McDonald's Opens Its Doors

Welcome to the Holidays, darling. Day 1 of our 12 episode series explores the fast food kingdom with those golden arches. Las Culturistas agree; "This was a day of cultural history, this gift." The girls discuss why McDonald's is culturally significant, how it relates to their stupid lives, and play Marry, Fuck, Kill with figures within the McDonald's canon. Do YOU think they should give two hash browns instead of one with McDonald's breakfast? Do you have a go-to meal or do you shake it up each time, order-wise? If you don't listen to this episode? Precious one, you're without.  Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"I Don't Give a Rip!" (w/ Amber Ruffin)

Matt and Bow say "What!" Because the star of her own show on Peacock and all-around comedy savior Amber Ruffin is on the pod this week! Listen in as they share their near-closing thoughts on the latest episode of "The Undoing," as well as the ins and outs of Amber managing her writer's room from coast to coast. There are then deep cultural observations around coming up in comedy in Amsterdam, Denver and Chicago, followed by Amber's wonderful culture that made her say culture was for her! A surprise gift delivery also delights the three before Amber inadvertently becomes yet another "Grey's Anatomy" correspondent for Matt and Bowen as she helps navigate where people can jump back into the show if they've fallen off. It's all capped off by scorching IDTSHs and a resounding endorsement for EVERYONE to watch "The Amber Ruffin Show," every Friday on Peacock!
