Session 376: Sexuality As We Age

In yet another episode of our 2024 Sex Positive September celebration, we’re discussing the ways in which our sex lives change and evolve as we get older. While the symptoms women experience during menopause and perimenopause can cause our sex lives to shift in some challenging ways, that doesn’t mean you still can’t embrace sexual vibrancy no matter the age. Joining me for today’s conversation is the New York Times Bestselling author of "Grown Woman Talk," Dr. Sharon Malone. Dr. Malone is a nationally known expert in women’s health, serving as the Chief Medical Advisor at Alloy Women’s Health, a telehealth company that focuses on women over 40. Dr. Malone and I chatted about all things menopause & sex, including how to combat some of the various symptoms that can make the idea of having sex less than appealing. We also discuss the importance of continued OBGYN visits even as you reach the end of your reproductive years, plus all the reasons why grown womanhood is something to look forward to, not to fear. Session 375: Redefining Pleasure

For the fourth year in a row, Therapy For Black Girls invites you to join us in celebrating Sex Positive September, a month in which we center the importance of Black women’s pleasure, agency, and sexual liberation. And there's no better way to kick off this month’s programming than with a conversation with returning guest Dr. Janelle Frederick, also known as the Vagina Rehab Doctor. Dr. Janelle is a pelvic floor physical therapist who uses social media to produce shame-free, entertaining, and high-quality sex education. In our conversation, we discussed some of the overlooked contributors to sexual pleasure, the ways in which anxiety and depression can impact a person’s ability to have pleasurable sex, and what we wish our parents would have taught us about sex. Session 374: Black Women In Sports Media

Athletes like Angel Reese & Sha’Carri Richardson have so brilliantly led women’s sports into the national spotlight, but with this has come lots of negative attention and straight-up negligent media coverage of these athletes and their sports. I wanted to hear from Black Women Sports journalists both in front of and behind the camera to explore what’s needed to correct some of these biased narratives. Joining me for this Black women in sports media roundtable are supervising producer Jasmine Ellis, and Emmy-award winning journalist Jemele Hill. Jasmine has worked on shows such as Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe's "A Touch More,” Speak.Easy for CNN+, and ESPNS’s SC6. And Jemele, making her return to the TBG Podcast, is a contributing writer for The Atlantic where she covers the intersection between sports, race, politics, gender and culture. During our conversation, we discussed the barriers that exist for Black women to enter the sports media space, the importance of cultural competency when covering women’s sports, and why we can’t just “stick to sports” when talking about female athletes. About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. TBG U Girl Chat: Let's Talk Summer 2024

Summer, is that you? Sure, it’s August, but we have a few more weeks to enjoy this weather, so let’s celebrate accordingly.  Welcome to the TBG University podcast, tailored for the 20-something who’s still obsessing over the finale of Love Island, replaying the hottest song of the summer, getting her tote bag packed for the first day of classes, and everything in between. Here at TBG, we believe in the healing power of sisterhood, and one of our favorite parts of female friendship is getting to sit down and kiki about everything that’s going on in our lives at the moment. So in this special girl chat episode, Jayna Ellis, TBG Coordinator and the Associate Producer of the TBG Podcast, Zariah Taylor, took some time to reflect on our summers.  In our girl chat today, we explore the pressure to have a “productive” summer, dive in to some recent pop culture, and share some advice for both the people going back to school and the post-graduate whose feeling unsure about their new normal. Session 373: Equine Therapy

After listening to Cowboy Carter far too much over this summer and hearing Beyoncé tell us to “look at that horse, look at that horse, look at that horse,” it was only right to then find out about equine-assisted psychotherapy, a form of therapy that incorporates a live horse in session with a client. To learn more about this unique type of therapy, I’m joined this week by 2nd year MSW candidate, Jasmine Morris. Jasmine works at Ebony Horsewomen Equestrian and Therapeutic Center in Hartford, Connecticut, where she serves as an Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy clinician. During our conversation we explore what a session of equine-assisted psychotherapy looks like, the potential benefits one could reap through this form of therapy, and how interacting with horses can help us build on our coping and emotional skills. Session 372: Black Women Athletes Reimagining Sports [ICYMI]

Like many of you, I’ve spent the past couple of weeks glued to the tv watching the Paris Olympics and in constant awe of the talent and athleticism of the athletes. Gymnastics is always one of my favorite competitions to watch but this year I was also tuned in for the track and field events and basketball. There was just no shortage of excellence on display. And as often happens, feats of Black women being excellent are often met with racism and sexism. A few years ago, right after the Tokyo Olympics, we released a conversation with Dr. Leeja Carter, a feminist sport psychology practitioner and the CEO of Coalition for Food and Health Equity that feels just as timely today. During our conversation we discussed the ways that gendered racism shows up in sports, how the strong black woman trope impacts athletes, and how athletes are using platforms like social media to tell more of their story. BONUS: Exploring Themes from Inside Out 2

I don’t know about you all, but I’m still unpacking all the feels from Inside Out 2, from the realistic depiction of anxiety attacks to seeing new emotions show up as main character Riley steps into her teenage years. Joining me today to explore some of the major themes featured in the movie is our Therapist Support Specialist and head of the TBG Thrive Tribe, Licensed Associate Professional Counselor, Gorgeous West. And, as a special treat, my two sons also joined me to offer their perspectives on the film as well. We discussed the scenes that stuck with us the most from the film, how therapists can reference the film to break down tough emotional concepts with clients, plus analyze the film’s most central character, Anxiety. Session 371: Decentering Romance

So many of us have been raised to prioritize romantic partnership and finding “the one,” over anything else, including some of our other, long-standing platonic relationships. Today we’re exploring the idea of Decentering Romance — a concept you may have seen on your social media feeds —  which asks us to explore what it looks like to seek romantic desire without letting it push out the other important relationships in our lives. Joining me for this discussion is licensed marriage and family therapist, Tiffany Hall. Tiffany is a coach, speaker, and writer based in the Philadelphia area who is passionate about working with women to understand the roles they play in their relationships and how it impacts who they are. During our conversation, we discussed the pitfalls of making romantic love the center of your life, how you can still maintain your friendships when dating, and the cultivation of family dynamics that honor non-romantic life partners. Session 370: Graduating From Therapy

When a therapist decides to terminate with a client, it may bring up lots of feelings for the client around shame, embarrassment, and rejection. Online, you may have seen people referring to termination as being “fired” by their therapist. Let’s dig into this a little bit more and explore the reasons why a therapist might “fire” their client.  Returning to dig deeper into this with me are Dr. Donna Oriowo, an award-winning DEI advocate, international speaker and certified sex and relationship therapist in the Washington D.C. metro area and Dr. D'Andria Jackson, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Psychological Consultant, and mental health speaker. During our conversation, we discussed some of the reasons why a therapist might terminate with a client, strategies for dealing with feelings of rejection that may come up after a therapist terminates with you, and how to become comfortable with the idea of one day graduating from therapy.
