Session 220: Black Women Athletes Reimagining Sports

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.Earlier this week marked the ending of the Tokyo Olympics and there was no shortage of stories about Black women athletes both leading up to and during the games. To help us dig a little deeper into some of the ways that gender and race intersected during the Olympics and through sports history, today I’m joined by Dr. Leeja Carter, an Associate Professor of Exercise Psychology at the intersection of racial and gender equity at Temple University. Dr. Carter and I chatted about the ways that gendered racism shows up in sports, how the strong black woman trope impacts athletes, how athletes are using platforms like social media to tell more of their story, and how athletes like Simone Biles & Naomi Osaka are ushering in a change about how athletes take care of themselves.ResourcesVisit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast!Join us for the Last Days of Summer Book Club chat on Aug. 26 @ 7pm EST. therapyforblackgirls.com/bookclub.Where to Find Dr. Carterhttps://www.leejacarter.com/http://www.coalitionequity.orgInstagram: @drleejaStay ConnectedIs there a topic you'd like covered on the podcast? Session 218: Exploring the Landscape of Black Women In Reality TV

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.Watching reality tv shows are one of my favorite pastimes. It’s been really interesting to see how programming in this space has developed over time and to follow the commentary. And what has been most interesting is the way the space has been accommodating, or not so much, to Black women cast members and Black audiences. To help us explore this world, today I’m joined by Dr. Racquel Gates. Dr. Gates and I chatted about the complicated nature of Black women’s representation on reality tv, how audiences often respond to majority Black casts, the stereotypes that are both upheld and dispelled through reality tv, and the changes that often happen between season 1 and 2 of a show.ResourcesVisit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast!Where to Find Dr. Gateshttps://www.racquelgates.com/Twitter: @raquelgatesStay ConnectedIs there a topic you'd like covered on the podcast? The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. In Session 210, we talked with Dr. Dianne Stewart about the principles and themes that underlie many African traditional religions and we promised you a part 2 of that conversation to learn more about the practice of these religions. To help us dig into this topic, today I’m excited that we’re joined by Ehime Ora. Ehime and I chatted about her personal journey to being an Ifa and Orisha priestess, where to start if you’re a beginner in these practices, how technology and social media have made it easier to teach others about these traditions, and how practicing African traditional religions can work in tandem with Christianity, Islam, and other faith practices.ResourcesVisit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast!itsjujubae.comhttps://twitter.com/blvck_herbalisthttps://twitter.com/oshunsdawtaWhere to Find Ehimeehimeora.comTwitter: @ehimeoraIG: @ehimeoraStay ConnectedIs there a topic you'd like covered on the podcast? Session 215: Black Women & Serial Violence

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. The true crime genre is one of the fastest growing, but it is incredibly telling who’s stories are told. This has become yet another space where the stories of Black women who are victims are largely ignored, particularly those of darker skinned Black women. This erasure perpetuates the myth that Black women are not targets of serial violence, leaving cases unsolved and communities shattered. To share about the important work she’s done to shed light on Black women victims of serial violence, today we’re joined by Dr. Terrion Williamson. Dr. Williamson and I chatted about how she began to research in this area, why Black women, particularly sex workers, are often targets for serial murder, the inequalities with which Black women victims are covered in the media, and the impact that these crimes have on communities.ResourcesVisit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast!Through the Cracks podcastWhere to Find Dr. Williamsonhttps://www.theblackmidwest.com/Stay ConnectedIs there a topic you'd like covered on the podcast? Join us for "The Skin I'm In"

Each July, we celebrate Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This year, the theme we’ve chosen is The Skin I’m In.So often as Black women we’re told it’s okay to be ourselves as long as it doesn’t make others uncomfortable. We’re told to embrace our individuality but in the ways that align neatly with the expression of individuality that’s digestible for society. But what happens when you don’t feel like you fit into the mold? We’re not always shown how to manage the othering and the stigma that comes with it. Well this month, we’re doing exactly that and expanding what it means to show up as a Black woman and sharing words of encouragement to any sisters struggling to accept what feels natural to them. All month long you can expect content on our blog, here on the podcast, in our Sister Circle community, and across our social media channels to celebrate being authentic to you. We’ll be engaging the ways history has impacted the way we love and value ourselves and tapping into the ways we can combat negative self-image. So be sure to visit us at therapyforblackgirls.com to stay connected and follow us on both IG & FB @therapyforblackgirls or on Twitter at @therapy4bgirlsAnd if you want to get the inside scoop and reminders about events and conversations for the month, you can text the word 'July' to 504-499-0663. Session 213: In The Circle w/ Deleesa

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.Y’all know that I am a huge reality tv fan and one of my favorite newer shows is "The Circle" on Netflix. Season 2 of the show wrapped in May 2021 and there were lots of twists and turns that required the contestants to think quickly on their feet and stay on top of their strategies. As the season progressed, I was paying close attention to the Black women in the game and the choices they were making and how other players were responding to them, and thinking a lot about what kind of strategy I might employ if I were to be on a show like this. Needless to say I had lots of questions and who better to help us answer some of these questions than Season 2 winner, Deleesa St Agathe. Deleesa and I chatted about why she chose to go into the game as her husband Trevor, how she prepared for the game, her thoughts about the perception of Black women on reality tv, how she kept herself busy in isolation, and the surprise of finding out she was expecting while filming.ResourcesVisit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast. therapyforblackgirls.com/amazonWhere to Find Deleesahttps://www.youtube.com/c/LeesaUniqueIG: https://www.instagram.com/leesauniqueTwitter: https://twitter.com/Leesa_UniqueStay ConnectedIs there a topic you'd like covered on the podcast? Session 212: Exploring Father Daughter Relationships

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. We’ve talked here on the podcast about Black women’s relationships with their mothers and many of you have asked us for an expansion of that conversation to discuss relationships with fathers. The term daddy issues is often thrown around, usually callously, to depict the difficulties some believe women have in romantic relationships as a result of the relationship they’ve had with their fathers. Today, we wanted to dig deeper into this to explore how Black women’s relationships with their fathers can impact us. For this conversation we're joined by Nic Hardy. LCSW. Nic and I discussed whether there is an impact on romantic relationships related to our relationship with our fathers, what kinds of qualities lead to healthy father and daughter relationships, healing from a damaged relationship with your father, and he answers some of the questions submitted by community members.ResourcesVisit our Amazon Store for all the books mentioned on the podcast. therapyforblackgirls.com/amazonWhere to Find Nichttps://www.nichardy.com/Stay ConnectedIs there a topic you'd like covered on the podcast?
