#323: Running Gear Advice + Anecdotes
Sarah and Maggie Palmer do a deep dive into all sorts of running gear—sports bras, hydration vests, shorts with pockets, anti-chafe products, and phone carriers—with Christine Pedder, a new, first-time mom who works at Gazelle Sports. A veteran of 16 half-marathons, Christine shares her wisdom about crucial gear items to make training for—and racing—13.1 miles more comfortable; she also lends insight into must-haves for newbie runners. Christine tosses out a catchy, smart phrase that’s new to even longtime gear writer SBS. (Other new-to-Sarah phrases in the show: “coffee run” and “bag man.”) The trio talks about layering in a savvy way that switches on a lightbulb for Sarah, as well as why gear trial-and-error is valuable to runners. Christine shares insight on how to “become one with” a hydration pack. Find out what now-discontinued piece of apparel both Sarah and Christine were in committed, long-term relationships with. #322: Talking TMI Topics with a Former Runner’s World Editor
Sarah and co-host Molly Williams keep it real (very real!) with guest Meghan Kita, author of How to Make Yourself Poop: And 999 Other Tips All Runners Should Know and a former editor at Runner’s World. The trio covers an array of TMI topics, leaving no turd, uh, stone unturned. Meghan, a first-time mom with a 5-month-old baby, starts by oversharing about her return to running post-baby, as she explains (in some detail!) why she saw a pelvic-floor physical therapist. From there, Meghan details how she juggles breastfeeding, pumping, and running. There’s piles of poop advice, including three tips for getting things moving pre-run. Molly explains why caffeine affects the urgency to pee—and how to ease that issue. Molly asks Meghan several male-oriented questions—then makes an outrageous admission that sends SBS into peals of laughter. The conversation changes to chafing, including a clever solution when a tee or socks are rubbing the wrong way on a run. Meghan proves why she’s the McGyver of the running world. All in all, an informative + hilarious episode! This week’s Nuun-drinking game: Toss some back whenever someone says the words “hot dog.” (Just be careful to not spew the hydration while laughing!) In the intro, the two running buddies reminisce about their June trip to Alaska, and SBS shares an update about her elderly mother. The TMI expert hops on at 18:55.If you're interested in details about joining group of #motherrunners training for 3 Days at the Fair road ultra, please sign up here.Have a Disney Challenge queued up for January 2019? #318: 6th Annual Summer Reading Podcast!
Sarah and co-host Ellison convene for what is one of their favorite days of the year: the recording of AMR’s annual summer reading episode! But the duo soon realizes it should be labeled a pop culture show, as they take frequent tangents to discuss their current favorite British TV shows (“Crashing” for SBS; “The Split” for Ellison) and new podcasts Sarah is listening to (“The RFK Tapes” and “The Gateway”). Speaking of podcasts, Ellison shares why her show, “The Book Bully,” has been on hiatus. When the conversation dwells on books (starting at 16:15), the recommendations run the gamut, from Scandinavian noir to several “quirky” novels to a novel with a “meta” conceit both SBS and E adored! Laughs—and a few tears—abound on this delightful conversation between two dear friends.Phone number for leaving questions for new bi-weekly “call-in” show: 470-BADASS1(470-223-2771)BOOKS MENTIONED (apologies for list not being 100% complete—lots of suggestions flying around!):Snareby Lilja SigurdardøttirLawn Boy by Jonathan EvisonWhat You Don’t Know about Charlie Outlaw by Leah Stewart The Word Is Murder by Anthony HorowitzYou Think It, I’ll Say It by Curtis SittenfeldHow Hard Can It Be by Allison PearsonFrench Exit by Patrick DeWittClock Dance by Anne TylerAdvice for Future Corpses by Sally TisdaleStay hydrated with Nuun Electrolytes: Visit nuunlife.com to receive 20% off your order when you use promo code AMRHYDRATEFor a vehicle that’s friendlier to the environment yet can hold you, your family, and all your summer gear, check out the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. #316: Special Father’s Day Episode 2018
Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin sit down with three father runners to get a look inside their lives. From early morning workouts to crying at the end of a race, the guys aren’t all that different from the gals. First up is Ty Francis, a trail runner/triathlete and a divorced dad of three young sons. A physical therapist, Ty tells why he adopted a guiding principle of training everyone should consider following. He also reveals why he had to let go of feeling competitive. Discover why he spent 22.5 hours on a bike—the reason will tug on your parental heart strings. Next, father of two Michael Goff joins the conversation. A newbie runner, Michael quickly describes himself as “athlet-ish, not athletic.” Laugh along with SBS and Coach Amanda as Michael explains why he doesn’t allow himself to go on Strava until at least an hour after a run. Courtesy of Michael, you’ll learn more acronyms (BRC; VBRF; BADR) to add to your vocab (in addition to BAMR). Michael is the first of two dads to admit to crying at a running race—the other one is the third guest, David Yonker. This Iowan father of two tells how he became an avid runner because of his wife. A pastor, David confesses a simple-but-clever trick he sometimes employs to catch his breath on a run. He talks about how he and his wife take turns with training cycles and workout times. Find out how the mighty Mississippi River factors into David’s life—as well as a fond fatherly memory of SBS. In the introduction, Sarah and Amanda reminisce about the eerily similar athletic lifestyles of each of their recently deceased fathers, and how these strong men influenced their own sporty lives. #315: Rediscover Joy in Running
Sarah and co-host Maggie Palmer have a conversation aimed at putting a pep in your step: They talk with two mother runners who work to help others find joy and acceptance in fitness activities. The first in-studio (ooh!) guest is Gwen Sullivan, one of the founders of Joyn, a platform promoting “group classes for movement and joy.” This mother of two explains how runs with her then-6-year-old son planted the seed for Joyn. Gwen explains how the platform is an invitation to take part in fitness—and why they aim for classes with “head-tilt” names. Next up in studio is Sarah Foote, a Portland-based coach who leads free classes that are part of Joyn. Hear how a post-50K race high set up this mom of two to injury, then the founding of the super-cool Wy’east SisterHood. She shares how she added joy back to her runs when they were becoming a grind. Speaking of: Find out why she had a pity-party in the middle of her first 50-mile race—and what pulled her out of it. You’ll nod and laugh along with SBS over much of what these two guests say, such as when Sarah admits: “I want to do things my kids think is kinda crazy.” In the intro, Maggie and SBS talk about their temporary solo-parenting stints, and Sarah gives a plantar fasciitis update. The first guest enters the conversation (and the studio) at 19:40.
