Elizabeth B. Splaine, Author, Shares Her World War II Historical Fiction Novel: Swan Song - 461
Elizabeth B. Splaine, author, shares her World War II historical fiction novel: Swan Song. This is episode 461 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Elizabeth B. Splaine is a retired opera singer who enjoys reading and writing WWII stories that focus on tenacity, hope and the indomitable human spirit.
Prior to writing, Elizabeth earned an AB in Psychology from Duke University and an MHA from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
She spent eleven years working in health care before switching careers to become a professional opera singer and voice teacher. When not writing, Elizabeth teaches classical voice in Rhode Island, where she lives with her husband, sons, and dogs
Today we are focused on her novel Swan Song.
A little about Swan Song...
Ursula Becker’s operatic star is on the rise in Nazi Berlin…until she discovers that she is one-quarter Jewish, a mischling of the second degree. Although Hitler is aware of her lineage, her popularity and exquisite voice protect her and her family from persecution. As Ursula’s violin-prodigy half-sister comes of age, she comes to the attention of the Führer, who welcomes the awestruck teenager into his elite, private circle. When William Patrick Hitler arrives in Germany and is offered employment by his doting Uncle Adolf, a chance encounter with Ursula leads to a romantic relationship that further shields the young diva from mistreatment. But for how long? Restrictions on Hitler’s perceived enemies tighten, and Ursula is ordered to sing at Hitler’s Berghof estate. There she throws down a gauntlet that unleashes the wrath of the vindictive megalomaniacal leader. Fearing for her life, Ursula and Willy decide to emigrate to England. But as the ship is about to sail, Ursula disappears. Desperately hoping that Ursula is still alive, Willy crosses the globe in an effort to find her, even as his obsessive uncle taunts him, relishing in the horror of the murderous cat-and-mouse game.

Matt Fitzpatrick, Author, Talks About His Thriller: Demon Tide - 457
Matt Fitzpatrick, author, talks about his newest thriller - Demon Tide. This is episode 457 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Matt is a former investment management professional who jettisoned Wall Street to pursue his dream as a novelist. He is the proud father of two daughters and enjoys every minute of watching them thrive and excel. A licensed Coast Guard captain, Matt cherishes life by the ocean and time boating on Nantucket Sound. With a deep media background mostly steeped in radio and print, he considers it a gift to be able to tell his stories and share his life experiences through the eyes of his protagonist, Justin McGee. Matt lives on Cape Cod. For more information visit him at mattfitzpatrickbooks.com
Matt is the author of The Justin McGee Trilogy.
Today we are focused on part 3 - Demon Tide…
A little about Demon Tide... This is a community that has lost its innocence. A quaint New England town that meets the growing opioid epidemic head-on. The town’s casualties build up as local law enforcement, as well as out-of-towners in the form of Justin McGee and his “family,” realize that it’s a crime that stems within the community’s own. A town whose roots are the source of pride are shattered knowing they have been infiltrated by the New England Nova Scotia drug trade.

Asia Klekowicz and Ryan York - The Gathering Place: An Elementary School With a Focus on Project-Based Learning, the Arts, and Helping Underserved Neighborhoods - 452
Asia Klekowicz and Ryan York - The Gathering Place: An Elementary School With a Focus on Project-Based Learning, the Arts, and Helping Underserved Neighborhoods. This is episode 452 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
The Gathering Place is the first and only restorative campus founded and based in San Antonio, Texas. Conceptualized by co-founders Asia Klekowicz and Ryan York, The Gathering Place’s education model is rooted in social justice and project-based learning and was inspired by Klekowicz and York’s beliefs that kids, especially in historically underserved neighborhoods, don't get a complete education. The pair spent 10 years teaching, leading, and seeing glimmers of what could be when teachers are trusted, kids are loved for who they are, and administrators don’t measure students by test scores. The Gathering Place opened in 2020 and currently serves Kindergarten to Third Grade, with plans to add a new grade level annually through the Twelfth Grade.
Asia Klekowicz (M. Ed) joined the movement for educational equity after witnessing the injustice of the school-to-prison pipeline while tutoring inmates in Boston. She joined Teach for America-Memphis and led her students to achieve 2.5years of growth, ranking in the highest percentiles across the state. She transitioned to developing high school math teachers across Chicago where she was the only coach in her organization to be recognized for excellence by every teacher in her cohort. She later ventured into the financial sector where she worked as an investment consultant managing a $536 million book and became the fastest promoted employee in the region.
Ryan York’s (M. Ed) career started by co-founding a nonprofit that served hundreds of children each year through its flagship program “Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp'' and opening a 6,000sq. ft. after-school arts facility outside of Nashville. Transitioning into the classroom, he was awarded the district All Star teacher award and developed a blended learning software management platform that led to the highest math growth in the district by enrolled teachers. As principal, Ryan led a school turnaround that ended with the highest staff retention, math scores, and 5th grade reading growth in one of the top performing school systems in Tennessee. Ryan and Asia began working together when they teamed up with RePublic Schools to create a middle and high school computer science curriculum and teacher training program. After six months, Ryan was promoted to CIO and won the National Sally Ride & Deloitte Award for Innovation.

Ready to start your own podcast? Podbean is an awesome host. I have been with them since 2013. Go to https://www.podbean.com/TLLK12 to get 1 month free of unlimited hosting for your new podcast.
Remember to take a look at NVTA (National Virtual Teacher Association) The NVTA Certification Process was created to establish a valid and reliable research-based teacher qualification training process for virtual teachers to enhance their teaching and develop their ongoing reflective skills to improve teaching capacity. NVTA is an affiliate sponsor of Teaching Learning Leading K12, by following the link above if you purchase a program, Teaching Learning Leading K12 will get a commission and you will help the show continue to grow.
Don't forget to go to my other affiliate sponsor Boone's Titanium Rings at www.boonerings.com. When you order a ring use my code - TLLK12 - at checkout to get 10% off and help the podcast get a commission.
Oh by the way, you can help support Teaching Learning Leading K12 by buying me a soft drink (actually making a donation to Teaching Learning Leading K12.) That would be awesome! You would be helping expand the show with equipment and other resources to keep the show moving upward. Just go to https://www.buymeacoffee.com/stevenmiletto
