Eileen J. Donovan: A Lady Newspaperman’s Dilemma - 515

Eileen J. Donovan: A Lady Newspaperman's Dilemma. This is episode 515 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Today I am talking with Eileen J. Donovan. Although born in New York City, where she spent most of her life, she has lived in six states and has visited most of the others. She earned her MA in English at Northern Arizona University. In one way or another, she has been writing her entire life, whether it was imaginative stories for her friends, or advertising copy for industrial clients. She never felt her stories were “good enough” to be published. At the persistent urging of her late husband, she finally agreed to seriously edit and revise one of them and take the plunge. Although accepted for publication, the book never made it all the way to print. However, she had the courage to pursue her dream of becoming a published author. Years later, her persistence paid off. Her traditionally published debut historical novel, Promises, won the 2019 Marie M Irvine Award for Literary Excellence. Her historical fiction, A Lady Newspaperman's Dilemma presently with Woodhall Press and released in September 2022, won the 2021 When Words Count nationwide competition. She's also had short stories published in various anthologies. Her non-fiction essay appeared in the 2021 Chicken Soup for the Soul Blessing of Christmas.  She lives in Manhattan, New York and is a member of Authors Guild, SCBWI, Women’s National Book Association, and The Historical Novel Society. Today we will be focused on writing and her recently released book - A Lady Newspaperman’s Dilemma … Awesome read! Awesome talk! But wait... Richard Owens & Anthony Cook: How can we make the college prep process equitable? - 514

Richard Owens & Anthony Cook: How can we make the college prep process more equitable? This is episode 514 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Today I’m talking with Anthony Cook and Richard Owens: Anthony is currently the Coordinator of College and Career Counseling at Osceola County School District in Kissimmee Florida. The National College Attainment Network (NCAN) recently named Cook one of 15 College and Career Readiness Fellows across the United States and the sole Fellow from Florida. Cook earned a Master of Science (M.S.) focused in Marriage and Family Therapy/Counseling from Stetson University. Richard Owens, The Managing Director of Programs at Tarrant To & Through Partnership (T3 Partnership), began his career in the classroom teaching fifth-grade math and science, and later joined Teach for America in a variety of roles.  As a senior managing director for Teach for America he built a community of more than 600 equity-driven corps members and alumni. With a focus on the power of diversity, Richard increased team composition from 25 to 45 percent people of color with varied backgrounds and experiences. He also designed and led staff learning experiences focused on the integration of personal values, cultivated relationships with key stakeholders and fostered an organizational culture that contributed to a 20 percent increase in teacher satisfaction. Most recently, Richard served as a District Support Consultant at the Holdsworth Center. In this role, he supported two North Texas districts is assessing and revamping their district wide talent development systems and practices. Richard earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Georgia. He is a graduate of the Cobb County School District in Marietta, Georgia. Our Focus is… How can we make the college prep process equitable? With the average school counselor ratio in public high schools 400 students to 1 counselor, it is difficult for school counselors to devote attention to each student and their needs.  Therefore, many families spend thousands of dollars hiring outside college prep counselors to assist their children. What about the families that can’t afford outside college prep? How can we create equity in the college application process?  So much to learn! Cool conversation! But wait...   Walter Stephen Geeding shares his award winning novel - Endless Times - Volume One: The Path of Kokopelli. This is episode 511 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Walter Stephen Geeding, ever since he ran away from home as a teen-ager to gallivant across North America with his best friend, has always been a curious man of adventure who has lived his life as wildly as the characters in his books.  In fact, it is hard to separate Walter from the exploits his characters unveil on the pages of his books.  At age 17, Walter was a hippie who traveled all over the nation and Canada in an old convertible. He did odd jobs – YMCA instructor, painted water towers, built homes, photo lab technician – and got himself into all kinds of brushes with the law. He even shot himself – twice – accidentally. Eventually he turned his life around, and at age 38 earned a BA in English from Missouri Southern State University. In 1996 he earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Tulsa. He became a prosecutor for McDonald County, Missouri, for eight years. Then he switched sides and spent 15 years as a defense attorney, owning and operating his law practice that specialized in criminal and civil law.  He was a bar president of the 40 th Judicial Circuit. He is a born storyteller and bullshitter extraordinaire. For nearly five years he wrote poetry for the Neosho Weekly. Walter has an interesting family lineage. His grandfather was a city marshal and a lead miner. His dad worked for the FBI.  His published books include the Endless Times series (Volume One: The Path of Kokopelli; Volume Two: Murphy Diggins); Colony trilogy (Book One: The End; Book Two: Narrations of Nui; Book Three: The Beginning); Even The Mice Get Fat (a collection of Christmas poems); and Pictures of Life; Rhyming Mind Pictures (poetic observations).  Walter is a rugged outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and archery. He has two children, two step-children, many ex-wives, and 14 grandchildren. For more information, please consult: www.walterstephengeeding.com. Gisela Bengfort-Piatti frequently tells stories to her kids and grandkids about animals, empathy, making decisions, and unlimited possibilities. Camryn, one of her grandkids, inspired her to write down some of these family stories and true events from her past to the present.  Her children’s book series covers topics of trust, friendship, fortitude, overcoming challenges, resilience, and love. Gisela loves the outdoors and all animals. You can find her on many Bay Area trails, sharing her laughter with family and friends. She was born in Switzerland, where she met the love of her life, Joe Bengfort, in 1997. She resides in Mill Valley, California and continues to share stories with her six grandchildren..  Today we will be focused on Gisela’s books - Wolfy’s Adventure: An Unlikely Friendship and Wolfy’s Adventure: Away from Home. Dan E. Hendrickson Discusses His Novel - The Living Legend: A Last Enemy Prequel, Writing Techniques, and Influences on His Writing - 507

Dan E. Hendrickson Discusses His Novel - The Living Legend: A Last Enemy Prequel, Writing Techniques, and Influences on His Writing. This is episode 507 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Dan Hendrickson was born in Sheridan Wyoming in 1962 near the rustic Big Horn mountain range to Carl and Helen Hendrickson. He went to school in the Sheridan School District graduating from Sheridan High School in 1981. He was an avid participant in boxing, martial arts, wrestling, and track. His father owned a small eight lane bowling alley that he ran until Dan was 12 years old. Carl also had a master’s degree in English and loved to write poetry and plays. Dan picked up on his father’s love for the written word and enrolled in Casper Community College in 1982 majoring in journalism. Although he found that he had an aptitude for investigative reporting, he decided that his interests were in other areas. He went on to do much volunteer Christian ministry work throughout the United States most of his adult life and continues to pursue those endeavors to this day. During that time, he gained another degree in Practical Theology. Throughout his many ministry assignments, he also worked several secular jobs. Some of his work experience includes law enforcement, security, emergency medical technician, and firefighting. He also helped run a Martial Arts School where he was a senior instructor. Most notable of his work experience is his auto detailing endeavors. He and his wife, Cheryl, have owned three different auto detailing businesses throughout the country, the last of which they still run to this day. Today, we are focused on his latest novel - a prequel - The Living Legend: A Last Enemy Prequel A little bit about The Living Legend: A Last Enemy Prequel… Dan E. Hendrickson's  new novel The Living Legend, shows a brilliance at creating tension and conflicts in the story. For those who enjoy action and adventure in a military setting, they will adore this book. Deception, politics, corruption, bravery, love, integrity, determination, and lots of action are the key elements on The Living Legend, the latest in The Last Enemy series from Dan E. Hendrickson. This is his follow-up book to penning Brandy: Ballad of a Pirate Princess, which was named last year by Online Book Club as its Historical Fiction Book of the Year. Set in the 1970s, on one side of the world, Tommy, a man seeking vengeance for his father’s murder; on the other side, Makena, a woman seeking to stop the slavery of her people. We’ll find out how their worlds collide in The Living Legend. “My books tend to have a military/law enforcement flavor because they deal with issues like modern day human trafficking, organized crime, high-sea drug smuggling, historical piracy, and slave trading,” says Hendrickson. “This one takes place when the Navy SEAL program was launched and the mission is to go after a Russian assassin.” This is an awesome read!
