I had Brain Surgery: Why, What Happened, and Recovery - Steve Miletto is Interviewed by Elizabeth Splaine - 630

On February 1st of 2022, I reported to a local hospital at 5:15AM for surgery to remove a tumor from my brain. The surgery took 10 hours. The two surgeons - a neurologist and an inner ear specialist worked together to remove the growing obstruction in my brain. The tumor was not cancer it is something known by multiple names - but was referred to as an acoustic neuroma or a vestibular schwannoma. After experiencing issues of sudden dizziness and a strange feeling of being off-balance as well as I thought that I had swimmer's ear... I was having a hard time hearing in my right ear, and it felt like when you have been swimming, and you get water in your ear - I finally went to see a doctor. This led to a couple of MRIs and numerous doctor visits with specialists and the diagnosis of a tumor.  When I first looked at the tumor in an MRI, it looked like a small marble, 6 months later on a new MRI it looked like a small mushroom. The tumor was growing on the nerve that controls hearing and balance on my right side. The fear was that it would eventually attach itself to the nerve that controls the right side of my face which would cause major issues. The surgeons decided that the best path was to remove the tumor and not use radiation. I was told that I would most probably lose all hearing in my right ear they were correct. Alan Gayton: Technology Director, Sci-Fi Enthusiast, and Barbecue Competitor -628

Alan Gayton: Technology Director, Sci-Fi Enthusiast, and Barbecue Competitor. This is episode 628 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Alan Gayton is a 51-year-old IT geek who has been playing with computers since he was a kid stealing software on a Commodore 64. He started his career as the first Technology Specialist for Gordon County Schools, where he had the dubious honor of fixing the computers and switches that always broke down. He then became an Instructional Technology Specialist, where he had to deal with endless questions such as “What does ‘click here’ mean?” He is now the Director of Technology for the North Georgia RESA, where he has the daunting task of managing the technology needs and issues of the RESA and its 5-member school districts. When he is not glued to his screen or phone, Alan likes to pretend that he is a pitmaster and a martial arts expert. He competes in competition BBQ as one half of team Q-Inator!, which is a clever name that he came up with after watching too much Phineas and Ferb. He and his partner have won some trophies and ribbons in various categories, but they are still far from being the best of the best. Alan also practices karate, which he learned from watching Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. He has a black belt, which he bought online (or maybe earned at UKS Karate), and he likes to show off his moves to anyone who will watch. Alan is always willing to help or teach someone something new, as long as they don’t ask too many questions or challenge his authority. He is a proud father of two children who are smarter and more talented than him, and a loyal husband to his wife who puts up with his antics. He lives in Calhoun, Georgia, where he enjoys the fresh air and the peaceful surroundings. Alan's Brunswick Stew Recipe MEAT: ½ lb smoked pork ½ lb smoked beef ½ lb smoked chicken OR 1 can Castleberry BBQ Pork 1 can Castleberry BBQ Beef ! lrg can Chunk Chicken 2 cans cream corn 2 cans petite diced tomatoes 1 bottle Chili sauce ¼ cup favorite bbq sauce (more or less to taste) Hot sauce to taste Salt and pepper to taste   Mix all in crock pot and cook on high for around 4 hours or on low for around 8.   A few notes: Meat To get it to turn out more like mine, you will need to use smoked meat and run it through a grinder with a large-holed plate. It will still be great if you don’t, but it does give it that more authentic texture Home smoked meat is best, but you can also get it from a local bbq restaurant If you decide to use canned, it is getting hard to find the Castleberry’s products in stores (particularly the beef) but you can probably use other brands or shop online. Feel free to add other veggies to make it how you like. Awesome conversation! Had so much fun! Enjoy it!   Before you go... Could you do me a favor? N.L. Holmes - Flowers of Evil: Hani’s Daughter Mystery Series Book One - 624

N.L. Holmes - Flowers of Evil: Hani's Daughter Mystery Series Book 1.  This is episode 624 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. N.L. Holmes is a prolific novelist embarking on another significant career phase. Prior to taking up the power of writing and using this pen name, she was an accomplished archaeologist and teacher for 25 years. Early in her career she served as a nun for two decades. In between she was an artist and antiques dealer. Yes, she has lived an interesting life, and the sum of her experiences informs and inspires her writings today. Holmes, who earned her doctorate in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Studies from Bryn Mawr College despite an offer to attend Princeton, has excavated in Greece and Israel, and taught ancient history and humanities at Stockton University in N.J. and University of South Florida for many years. She also did archaeological artwork for excavations from Lebanon. With 11 published novels, Holmes is the creator of The Lord Hani Mysteries. The inspiration for her Bronze Age novels came with an assignment she gave to her students one day: Here are the only documents we have telling us about royal divorce in Ugarit in the 13th century. How much can we say about what happened? She notes: “It quickly became apparent that almost anything we might come up with was as much fiction as historiography!” She also penned The Empire At Twilight series, historical fiction set in the 13th century C.B. during the Hittite Empire, and Hani’s Daughter Mysteries, a spin-off historical fiction series. Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, she attended The University of Texas in the honors program but dropped out midway to enter into the antiques business. Two years later, she entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Texas. She left the convent 20 years later and returned to school to get her B.A. in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology. Holmes resides with her husband, three cats, and a dog. They split their time between Tampa, Florida and northern France, where she gardens, weaves, and plays the violin. They have an adult son. For more information, please consult www.nlholmes.com. A little about Flowers of Evil When two young women in ancient Egypt open a medical dispensary, they don’t expect their first patient to be a dying florist of Amen whose last words are totally mysterious. It’s Neferet and Bener-ib’s nature to want to appease the ba of the murder victim by finding his killer, and their teenaged apprentice is a born detective. But between the skepticism of their own families and the malice of a rival healer, they find out the simple desire to do the right thing gets them into more trouble than they could have imagined! Scott M. Hoffman - Discusses His Thriller - Inside: A Fictional Account of a Member of an Organized Crime Family - 621 Scott M. Hoffman was a witness to historical events concerning major mob families. He learned the inner workings from his dad, who loyally served The Outfit for over 55 years – never spending a day in prison. Now 74, he is a native of Chicago. He is a graduate of Long Island University-Brooklyn with a B.A. in Journalism. For 35 years he worked for the City of Chicago in the Departments of Purchasing and Finance. Inside is his first published book. Scott Hoffman is not a name that is listed in any court records or historical documents about the Mafia. But he was in the room when meetings took place, he saw street enforcers and juice collectors deal out punishment, and he interacted with the real Goodfellas and Godfathers, including notorious gangsters Henry Hill, Tony Accardo, and Sam Giancana.  Inside begins in 1956 with Jimmy Williams, a 47-year-old man with two families-his wife and two children and the Outfit. He's a good man, a good husband, and a good father, while, at the same time, he is a physically powerful man who is well respected as a consigliere in the Outfit.
