Ben Tanzer - Award Winning Author Shares his Novel: The Missing. This is episode 660 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Emmy-award winner Ben Tanzer's acclaimed work includes the short story collection UPSTATE, the science fiction novel Orphans and the essay collections Lost in Space and Be Cool. Dr. Stephen A. Furlich - Nonverbal Epiphany: Steps to Improve Your Nonverbal Communication. This is episode 659 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Dr. Stephen Furlich is the author of Nonverbal epiphany: Steps to Improve Your nonverbal Communication. He is also the best-selling author of a breakthrough book, Sex Talk: How Biological Sex Influences Gender Communication Differences Throughout Life’s Stages. He has taught and researched communication at the university level for over 20 years. He has taught a variety of communication courses with the main focus of better understanding oneself and others. Often, his research projects and the courses that he taught, complemented each other and led into innovative directions. Dr. Furlich has been an associate professor at Texas A & M University since 2018 and served as an assistant professor there for five years prior to that. He has presented at many conferences, including: DFW Metroplex Linguistics Conference, Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education Conference, E-Learning Conference, National Communication Association Conference, Southern States Communication Association Conference, International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines, and International Conference of the American Pragmatics Association. Dr. Furlich, who was recently interviewed by One America News Network, has been published in numerous journals, including: Texas Speech Communication Journal, Kentucky Journal of Communication, The Florida Communication Journal, Journal of Applied communication Research, Academic Exchange Quarterly, Journal of Integrated Social Sciences, and Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. His communication paradigm is from a receiver’s perspective. This places the emphasis on the listener to better understand from the speaker’s perspectives and as a speaker emphasizing understanding from the listener’s perspectives. Both of these become more challenging as differences increase between the speaker and listener. Dr. Furlich has become fascinated with technological advancements in science that have enabled a better understanding of communication. Without these scientific advances, understanding communication is quite limited. This line of research has inspired him to write this book to bring together many different scientific studies to better understand the role of biology with nonverbal communication cues.  He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education, a Master of Arts in Communication Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Texas Tech University. Lorraine M. Radice, PhD - Leading a Culture of Reading: How to Ignite & Sustain a Love of Literacy in Your School Community. This is episode 653 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Lorraine Radice, PhD, is the PreK–12 director of literacy in Long Beach Public Schools in New York. There, she leads curricular improvement and facilitates professional learning experiences for teachers. Dr. Radice leads teams to develop literacy curricula, monitor student engagement and progress, bridge literacy experiences between the school and community, and consistently build a culture that promotes and celebrates reading and literacy. She also teaches professional development courses for teachers that align with district goals. Prior to becoming a school leader, Lorraine was an English teacher and literacy specialist. She also taught in programs to support language acquisition for elementary, middle, and high school students learning English. Dr. Radice teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in childhood education and literacy at Hofstra University in New York. Dr. Radice is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and presents at its national conferences. Her writing has been featured on the NCTE blog. she is also a member of the International Literacy Association and has published in ILA’s Literacy Today. Dr. Radice is committed to sharing in professional learning communities at the local, state, and national levels where she presents her research and field work. Her research on digital literacies in middle level classrooms was published in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment: Intersecting New Needs and New Approaches, a volume in The Handbook of Research in Middle Level Education. Student work from Dr. Radice’s teams has been featured in ASCD’s Educational Leadership magazine. Lorraine earned a bachelor’s degree in childhood education and psychology and a master’s degree in literacy studies at Hofstra University. She earned an advanced certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from St. John’s University. She also earned an advanced certificate in educational leadership and a doctorate in philosophy in literacy studies at Hofstra University. Elliott Seif, PhD - Teaching for Lifelong Learning: How to Prepare Students for a Changing World. This is episode 652 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Elliott Seif, PhD, is an educational presenter, author, school volunteer, and public-school advocate. He has served as a social studies teacher, a professor of education at Temple University, and the director of curriculum and instruction services for the Bucks County Intermediate Unit, an educational service agency for Bucks County, Pennsylvania. At the Bucks County Intermediate Unit, Dr. Seif provided leadership in curriculum and instruction training and reform, and he developed, led, or participated in more than 50 program reviews for Bucks County school districts. He has conducted professional development programs with numerous schools and school districts throughout the United States and abroad on a variety of topics, including standards-based education, thinking-skill development, instructional improvement, assessment issues, and curriculum development. Dr. Seif is the author of many books, handbooks, articles, commentaries, and reports, including a textbook on the teaching of elementary social studies. He has published articles in Educational Leadership, the journal of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). Dr. Seif has received many awards for his accomplishments, including from ASCD, the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units, the Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and Bucks County Schools. Dr. Seif earned a Master of Education degree from Harvard University and a doctorate in curriculum research and development from Washington University in St. Louis. Karen Gazith, PhD, is a faculty lecturer in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology at McGill University, where she also serves as the graduate program director for the Certificate of Inclusive Education and for the ECP liaison for the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education.  From 2018 to 2020, Dr. Gazith served as the academic project leader for McGill University Faculty of Education’s Determining Best Practice for Students with Learning Challenges in Quebec: Comprehensive Review and Knowledge Mobilization. She is also the author of Teaching with Purpose: How to Thoughtfully Implement Evidence-Based Practices in Your Classroom. She serves additionally as the director of the Bronfman Jewish Education Centre of Federation CJA.  She holds a strong belief that teachers play a critical role in the success of their students, and she has presented worldwide on topics related to developing key competencies in leadership, inclusive education, evidence-based practices, and assessment and instruction. Dr. Gazith began her teaching career at the Feuerstein Institute in Jerusalem, where she implemented Dr. Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment Program for young children and adolescents. She has taught at Hebrew College in Boston and the University of New Brunswick as well. Dr. Gazith has won numerous excellence awards at Federation CJA in Montreal, including the Pearl Feintuch Award, the Gewurz Award for Jewish Educational Leadership, and Federation CJA awards of excellence. She’s received scholarships from Les Fonds pour la Formation de Chercheurs et l’Aide à la Recherche from the Quebec government, as well as from the Scottish Rite Foundation for doctoral research. Dr. Gazith earned a doctorate in educational psychology from McGill University.
