You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
Stephanie Winn
A podcast at the intersection of psychology and culture that intimately explores the human experience and critiques the counseling profession. Your host, Stephanie Winn, distills wisdom gained from her practice as a family therapist and coach while pivoting towards questions of how to apply a practical understanding of psychology to the novel dilemmas of the 21st century, from political polarization to medical malpractice.
What does ethical mental health care look like in a normless age, as our moral compasses spin in search of true north? How can therapists treat patients under pressure to affirm everything from the notion of "gender identity" to assisted suicide?
Primarily a long-form interview podcast, Stephanie invites unorthodox, free-thinking guests from many walks of life, including counselors, social workers, medical professionals, writers, researchers, and people with unique lived experience, such as detransitioners.
Curious about many things, Stephanie’s interdisciplinary psychological lens investigates challenging social issues and inspires transformation in the self, relationships, and society. She is known for bringing calm warmth to painful subjects, and astute perceptiveness to ethically complex issues. Pick up a torch to illuminate the dark night and join us on this journey through the inner wilderness.
You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist ranks in the top 1% globally according to ListenNotes. New episodes are released every Monday. Three and a half years after the show's inception in May of 2022, Stephanie became a Christian, representing the crystallization of moral, spiritual, and existential views she had been openly grappling with along with her audience and guests. Newer episodes (#188 forward) may sometimes reflect a Christian understanding, interwoven with and applied to the same issues the podcast has always addressed. The podcast remains diverse and continues to feature guests from all viewpoints.

76. ADHD: Nature or Nurture? Under-Diagnosed or Over? Gender-Specific or Not? With Ryan Wexelblatt
Is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder underdiagnosed or overdiagnosed? Should we think of it as a product of nature, nurture, or a combination of the two? Is it best treated as a developmental condition children will grow out of, or a lifelong neurological difference? Should it be approached differently in boys versus girls? Should society accommodate it like a disability, or should those who have this diagnosis adapt themselves to fit the world? Can it best be remedied by lifestyle, therapy, coaching, or medication? And, if left untreated, are young people at risk of failure-to-launch?In this episode, I had a conversation with Ryan Wexelblatt, also known as the ADHD Dude, about the topic of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and how it is perceived in our society. We delved into the nature versus nurture debate and explored the role of lifestyle factors in ADHD. Ryan argues that while environmental factors can exacerbate symptoms, ADHD itself is not caused by these factors. Ryan highlights the need to differentiate between normal developmental processes and the underlying executive functioning challenges associated with ADHD. Ryan emphasizes the importance of following scientific evidence and understanding that ADHD is a genetic condition with biological markers. We also discussed the concept of time blindness, which refers to the difficulty individuals with ADHD have in perceiving the passage of time, and how this may be influenced by our modern world, with its constant access to technology and lack of natural time markers.Moving on to the specific challenges faced by boys with ADHD, we explored the importance of understanding the differences in how boys develop social skills compared to girls. Ryan highlights the need for a male perspective in the field of ADHD and social skills training, as many existing approaches tend to teach overly formal etiquette that may not resonate with boys. We also address the issue of self-diagnosis and the influence of social media, cautioning against the misinformation and oversimplification that can occur in online discussions about ADHD.Ryan Wexelblatt is a licensed clinical social worker, former school social worker, and father to a son. Ryan founded ADHD Dude, an evidence-informed resource for parents of children diagnosed with ADHD that provides practical strategies to address ADHD-related challenges. He has worked in the field for two decades and is a contributor to ADDitude Magazine. Ryan creates content for the ADHD Dude YouTube channel and the ADHD Dude Membership Site. Ryan is about to launch "Raising Boys On the Spectrum", the first male-specific resource for parents of boys diagnosed with higher-verbal autism. 73. Psychiatry and its Discontents: Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring on Reclaiming Mental Health from Meds
In this episode, we welcome Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring, a board-certified psychiatrist and former FDA medical officer who has dedicated his career to helping patients safely discontinue psychiatric medications. In this information-packed deep-dive, Dr. Josef and I discuss adverse reactions during and following psychiatric medication use, especially regarding benzodiazepines and antidepressants. Dr. Josef believes that taking a more holistic approach to understanding the effects of psychiatric medication enables better therapeutic use of the drugs. He argues against the notion of merely correcting a chemical imbalance and advocates for a more fulfilling approach to psychiatry. Additionally, he suggests that family medicine doctors should refrain from prescribing these medications unless they have sufficient time to thoroughly assess the medication's impact on various aspects of a person's life. Initially, Dr. Josef pursued a career in psychiatry with the hope of combining personal development and medicine. However, upon studying and practicing psychiatry, he discovered that the field's approach to helping individuals has little to do with personal development. Instead, in Dr. Josef’s view, the field often focuses on prescribing medications, likening it to a production line that simply dispenses medications, masquerading as scientific treatment for neurological deficits. He expresses disappointment in the field's lack of emphasis on personal development within psychiatry.Dr. Josef Witt-During is a board certified psychiatrist and former FDA medical officer. He specializes in adverse drug reactions of psychiatric medications and is the co-founder of Witt-During Psychiatry, along with his wife, Dr. Marissa Witt-Doerring. Together, they provide comprehensive drug taper programs, conservative medication management, and supportive coaching for those withdrawing from psychiatric drugs. For more resources related to Dr. Josef’s work, please take a listen to his podcast, Life on Less Meds, his Twitter, or you can find him and others where I did, @PSSDNetwork on Twitter. For those interested in this therapeutic path, we provide practical (not medical) advice on using psychedelics safely and effectively, addressing matters of harm reduction, micro dosing and guided journeys, along with important do's and don'ts of set and setting. Drawing parallels between the dynamics of cults and certain aspects of the transgender movement is a crucial part of today's discussion where emotional and psychological traits can make individuals vulnerable to both. This week’s episode offers a comprehensive investigation into the challenges parents of ROGD children face, the role of trauma, and the transformative power of meditation and psychedelic therapy. 70. Navy Veteran and Med Student Tells All: How Far Has Institutional Capture Gone in 2023? with Sarah
Today, anonymity presents a unique opportunity to hear a medical student and Navy veteran's perspective on how institutional capture has impacted the military and medical campuses. As a historically progressive person, Sarah shares shocking anecdotes of ways that policies aimed at promoting social justice are harming the effectiveness and efficiency of our national institutions, as she discovered during her experience within the Navy and a west coast medical school. Sarah is a Navy veteran, certified paramedic, and third year medical student. She obtained her paramedic license at age 19, and soon after she joined the Navy where she worked at a stateside clinic, on a forward-deployed aircraft carrier, and in a remote overseas Naval hospital. After honorably discharging, she returned home and was accepted into medical school in 2020. She plans to graduate in 2025 and specialize in emergency medicine. Today’s episode is available here and on my Twitter, @sometherapist.

69. Parents with Inconvenient Truths about Trans: Gigi & Josie
When your child says they are trans, where can you go for guidance, support, or advocacy? How do families navigate current trends in the counseling and medical fields and get children the help they need without submitting to a path of lifelong medicalization? On today’s episode, I am joined by two moms who have undertaken a challenging journey through gender ideology in order to help parents by providing resources to families affected by gender affirming care policies around the world. Gigi Larue is proud to serve as the West Coast Intake Coordinator for Our Duty Group. This non-profit aims to provide support to parents of trans identifying youth. In December of 2020, Our Duty Group staged the first gender clinic protest at CHLA in Los Angeles. This organization evolved from 5 people standing in the rain to over a hundred in Anaheim at the AAP by October 2022. Our Duty Group’s message is getting out there and the world is waking up to this emergent medical scandal. Josie is a co-founder of the organization Parents with Inconvenient Truths about Trans (PITT).For related work and resources, please visit: Parents of ROGD KidsNew Book, “Parents with Inconvenient Truths about Trans: Tales from the Home-Front in the Fight to Save Our Kids” available 08/14/2023! Be on the lookout for it in my bookshop with the proceeds being donated to Genspect! Josie mentioned Abigail Shrier’s book, “Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters,” which is available in the “Gender, Sexuality, and Hormones” section of my bookshop!A colleague was mentioned in this episode, Stella O’Malley.
