159: Our 10 Favorite Books of the Year (for all ages!)

We’re sharing our 10 favorite books we’ve read this year--from picture books we read aloud to graphic novels our kids loved to the stories we couldn’t put down. These are the books that stood out from all the rest in our homeschool year. Shop this booklist (and all the other books we’ve loved) at bookshop.org/shop/homeschoolunrefined.    Plus, you can join us on Patreon to hear our conversation about homeschooling through puberty.     Aha Moment "Our kids still need 1-on-1 time with us. Even when we’re already together all day--and even when they’re older." -Angela   Listener Question Join us on Patreon where we're answering this question: "Any advice or resources for kids going through puberty? My son is 12 and he hates doing anything right now even though he will fully acknowledge that he sees the benefit, feels good after he completes schoolwork, etc. He fights everything beforehand and I know so much of it is just changing hormones, but I would love suggestions for ways to navigate this season of schooling and make it as enjoyable as possible for him."      $5 Squad on Patreon We know that a lot of subscriptions and memberships can be out of reach financially for homeschool families, and it’s often us parents that give up the things we want in order to afford what our families need.   But we really want our Squad to be affordable for you because every homeschool parent should be able to get connected to the support they need. You get ALL our rewards and join our community for just $5/month. 156: When Hobbies Are Your Homeschool

When there’s joy, there’s learning! We're talking all about hobbies in our homeschool: the why, the how, and all the ways these seemingly trivial activities and interests can actually unlock deep learning, self-confidence, and lifelong joy for our kids.   As always, you’ll also get an Aha Moment and our LTWs at the end. Plus you can join us on Patreon to hear us talk through this week’s listener question.   Takeaways -Hobbies are something we do because we want to, and doing something because you want to helps us focus and learn more.   -Hobbies create a sense of success more than we might experience doing things we don't want to do. Hobbies help us to spiral UP!    -Hobbies support mental health and emotional regulation.   -Hobbies give our kids a noncoercive experience of learning. They help us learn to love learning and enjoy the process of hard work.   -Hobbies get us into a flow state. They build our confidence to try new things and explore more.   -Hobbies reduce stress. Making time for hobbies now helps our kids establish the lifelong habit of cultivating hobbies.    -A flexible schedule and routine gives us time to explore hobbies.   -When kids have time for hobbies, they’ll come back to the table refreshed.   -Encourage and support hobbies--even ones we don’t understand and ones that happen on (gasp!) screens.   -Homeschool can be built around hobbies or playing, with academics in between—because hobbies are learning!   -Create excitement about the day by putting hobbies first, followed by hard work.   -Kids are figuring out who they are and how to have a full life when they explore their interests.    -What not to do: -turn their hobby into an academic thing -invalidate their screen-based hobbies -go overboard or get over involved    Mentions Sidewalk chalk 154: Unrefined Education: What Have We Learned From Pandemic Schooling? 153: Permission to Cancel School This Year   Aha Moment "Get the supplies." -Maren    Listener Question Join us on Patreon to hear our conversation about the question: “How do you navigate parenting with your partner?”   $5 Squad on Patreon We know that a lot of subscriptions and memberships can be out of reach financially for homeschool families, and it’s often us parents that give up the things we want in order to afford what our families need.   But we really want our Squad to be affordable for you because every homeschool parent should be able to get connected to the support they need. 155: Finding a Rhythm, Unschooling, and Screens

We've been answering listener questions all season over on Patreon, and we wanted to share one of those exclusive episodes with you! Ashley asked the questions many of us are wrestling with right now: “I want to feel ok with doing less and just letting learning happen naturally, but I feel like public school stole the spark of love for learning from my 8-year old who went to K and 1st. How do I bring the spark back?” She also asked about unschooling (can I really do it?), finding a rhythm (HOW?!), cooking (does an air fryer count?), and self-care (thanks to Rocket Royale and Roblox): “Is this just a season though? It’s been a year.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀   This is an episode that is normally exclusive to our Patreon community. Patrons get all our Q&A episodes this season, plus 2 monthly episodes year round. 154: Unrefined Education: What Have We Learned From Pandemic Schooling?

This is a special pilot episode of a new project: Unrefined Education. The last year has given us an opportunity to change how we do school, so we want to take a look back at what we've learned from a year of pandemic schooling and imagine how we can use this last year as a catalyst for real change. We'll cover the state of school, how kids actually learn, and what we propose schools can and should do to prioritize child and teen mental health as we reopen.   About Unrefined Education If you’ve listened to Homeschool Unrefined for a while, you know we are passionate not just about homeschool, but education in general.  We’ve always had kids and how they learn at the heart of our work. Unrefined Education is a manifestation of this thinking. We’re going to talk about not only homeschool, but how kids learn and what they need in all settings. We’re going to talk about schools, policies, and what we believe could help in the public realm.   Our goal is to reconcile the inner workings of children and the way we teach them. We want to understand their minds, hearts, bodies and wills in order to create an ideal learning and living environment for every child. We not only want to make learning better for the typical learner, but we want atypical learners to thrive. We want the same opportunities and joy for children of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds. We believe learning should be joyful, challenging and motivating. Not punitive, restrictive and harsh. We are here to open up the conversation that we, as adults, have the power to make the changes needed not only for our own children, but for our communities, country and world.    We'd love if you would share this episode with anyone you know who's also interested in transforming education.    Listener Question Join us on Patreon to hear our conversation answering the question: “I was shocked that burnout is like a known thing among homeschoolers in February. What other patterns have you and others noticed that I can anticipate?”   $5 Squad on Patreon We know that a lot of subscriptions and memberships can be out of reach financially for homeschool families, and it’s often us parents that give up the things we want in order to afford what our families need.   But we really want our Squad to be affordable for you because every homeschool parent should be able to get connected to the support they need. 153: Permission to Cancel School This Year

We’re just gonna say it: You don’t have to do school this year. In this episode, we’re talking about why it’s ok to skip academics and prioritize mental health and life learning. This is specific to our current pandemic circumstances, but it also applies to any season of life when things just aren’t “normal”: sickness, job loss, moving, traveling, having a baby. Because whatever you’re living through, THAT is the learning experience.  Takeaways  -Even if you were homeschooling before the pandemic, this way of homeschooling isn’t normal. -Stress is high, for us and for our kids. And stress makes learning harder.  -What are our kids learning besides academics, that might need to take precedence? -Kids are learning things like empathy, figuring out their own interests, managing stress, creating healthy relationships and boundaries, self care, etc. They are getting real life experience in how to deal with real life experiences. -Ask yourself why you are doing academics. Is it because you think you need to get through the material or your kids will be “behind”? What are the outcomes of “pushing through”? -We get to be their guide and support them through these experiences now. They’re building a tool box that they can use for their whole lives.   As always, you’ll get our LTWs at the end, and we’ve added a new listener question segment! Join us on Patreon to hear us answer this week’s question.   Aha Moment Quote "Learning happens when we're ready to learn." -Maren    Listener Question Join us on Patreon to hear our conversation answering the question: “How do you bring the spark back to learning?”   $5 Squad on Patreon We know that a lot of subscriptions and memberships can be out of reach financially for homeschool families, and it’s often us parents that give up the things we want in order to afford what our families need.   But we really want our Squad to be affordable for you because every homeschool parent should be able to get connected to the support they need. 152: What's Going On With Chores

It seems like we parents always want to know how everyone else is handling chores, yet chores are also (surprisingly) personal! We all have different standards, different capacity, and different families. We share how we think about chores in general, our why behind doing (and NOT doing) chores with our kids, what chores look like for us now with tweens and teens, and what chores looked like when our kids were younger.   As always, you’ll get our LTWs at the end, and we’ve added a new listener question segment! Join us on Patreon to hear us answer this week’s question.   Takeaways -Chores take both parenting time and attention. If we don’t have that to give, it’s ok to skip doing chores with kids for a season. -Our standards as adults are different than kids’ standards. They’re still growing and it’s developmentally normal (and good!) for them to have priorities that are different from ours. -We all live together, so we should all be contributing together. -Chores help our kids understand responsibility and learn life skills. -Helping gives kids a sense of purpose and contribution, which feels really good and boosts self-esteem. -Chores are good practice for how to work and communicate as a team.  -Sometimes we DON'T do chores because it is a lot of work to manage helping kids do chores. -Sometimes we DON'T do chores because it’s a lot of pressure on kids; it can be overwhelming. -Sometimes we DON'T do chores because it's creating relational strain, resentment, or severing connection.   Aha Moment Quote "It’s ok to design your homeschool day around YOUR energy." -Angela   Listener Question Join us on Patreon to hear our conversation answering the question: “What do you do when your kid has a passion you're not very excited about like video games or screens? What if they don't seem to have a passion at all?”   $5 Squad on Patreon We know that a lot of subscriptions and memberships can be out of reach financially for homeschool families, and it’s often us parents that give up the things we want in order to afford what our families need.   But we really want our Squad to be affordable for you because every homeschool parent should be able to get connected to the support they need.
