TSC_054 Sandra Richter, Stewards of Eden

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Sandra Richter <- Back to Episodes Sandra Richter Sandra (‘Sandy’) Richter (PhD, Harvard) joined David Capes by Zoom to talk about her 2020 book The Stewards of Eden: What Scripture Says about the Environment and Why It Matters (IVP, 2020).  David and Sandy’s paths have crossed a number of times in meetings of Scripture scholars.  Much of what Sandy has thought and written about during her career has to do with creation and the fall (Genesis 1-3).  This book is no different, but it takes Sandy’s concerns about the environment to a new level.  Sandy hopes to awaken the sleeping giant, that is, the passion, energy and focus of evangelical Christians and churches, to understand and act consistently with Scripture and the gospel when it comes to the environment.  She has written what amounts to a biblical theology of environmental stewardship that demands a response.  She wants to move evangelicals past the politics to a courageous moral stance when it comes to God’s earth and everything in it.               The post TSC_054 Sandra Richter, Stewards of Eden first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC 052 Gib Allen, The Moses Way

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Gib Allen <- Back to Episodes Gib Allen, The Moses Way Dr. Gib Allen joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to discuss his new book The Moses Way: A Pastor-Directed Model to Address Conflict (2020).  “Gib” is a friend and patron of the Lanier Theological Library and has pastored churches for nearly 40 years in Arkansas and Texas.  Not long after beginning his ministry, he discovered that his seminary education had taught him little to nothing about how to deal with conflict in the church.  Over time he talked with leaders, read good books and has come up with an approach any pastor or church leader can follow in order to address conflict redemptively in the church. He does this with a careful reading of how Moses dealt with conflict with the children of Israel on the journey to the Promised Land. Whether you are a pastor or interested layperson, the chances are good your church has faced, is facing or will face conflict serious enough to rock the foundations (21 minutes). Contact Gib Allen at www.giballen.com.             The post TSC 052 Gib Allen, The Moses Way first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC 051 A.J. Swoboda, After Doubt

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes A.J. Swoboda <- Back to Episodes A.J. Swoboda Dr. A. J. Swoboda (PhD University of Birmingham), assistant professor of Bible, theology, and world Christianity, has written a terrific book for everyone who struggles with doubt.  It is called After Doubt: How to Question Your Faith without Losing It (Brazos Press, 2021).  He joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to discuss what motivated him to write the book and what he has learned by walking with people who wrestle with doubt for the last twenty years.  Doubt and deconstruction are normal parts of the theological journey, he believes.  But ultimately, the journey does not have to end in “shipwreck.”  With the right guides and right disciplines, it is possible to stay on the journey with a stronger, more resilient  faith.  But there are no quick fixes or easy rides.             The post TSC 051 A.J. TSC 048 Carmen Imes, Bearing God’s Name: Why Sinai Still Matters

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Carmen Imes <- Back to Episodes Carmen Imes, Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters Dr. Carmen Joy Imes, Associate Professor of Old Testament at Prairie College in Alberta, Canada, joins David Capes to talk about her book, Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters (InterVarsity Press, 2019). While some Christian leaders want to disconnect from the Old Testament law, Dr. Imes thinks is it indispensable that we get back to Sinai in order to understand what God has been up to all along.  Without understanding Israel's mission, we may miss our own.  Particularly, she makes a convincing case for what it means "to take the Lord's name in vain."  The story of Israel is the wilderness at Sinai is not ancient.  If we take it seriously, it is our story too.           The post TSC 048 Carmen Imes, Bearing God’s Name: Why Sinai Still Matters first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.

TSC 046 Kyle Hughes, How the Spirit Became God

The Stone Chapel Podcasts Hosted by David Capes Kyle Hughes <- Back to Episodes Kyle Hughes, How the Spirit Became God  Kyle Hughes has written an important book, and he joins David Capes on “The Stone Chapel” to discuss it.  The book is How the Spirit Became God: The Mosaic of Early Christian Pneumatology (Cascade Books, 2020).  In this book Hughes tells a compelling story of how the church came to recognize the Spirit as divine and person.  With a firm grasp on relevant primary and second literature he makes the case for an early and consistent divine pneumatology arising out of how Christians over several centuries read their Scriptures, the Old and New Testaments.         The post TSC 046 Kyle Hughes, How the Spirit Became God first appeared on Lanier Theological Library.
