He was selected as the first African-American Rhodes Scholar from Arkansas in 1978, was the first African American in the 125-year history of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to earn full professorship with tenure in the basic sciences in 2002, and was the first African American dean at the University of California, Davis – where he led their College of Biological Sciences.
